Starting Our Number Adventure
Have you ever wondered, when you open your eyes in the morning and see sunlight streaming into your room, this ordinary moment actually holds a wonderful secret? Math has been with you all along!
Math isn't just in textbooks and test papers—it's like the air around us, quietly surrounding each one of us. Whether you're at home, at school, in a park, at a supermarket, a zoo, or an amusement park, math is there, quietly doing its job. Mathematicians call this everywhere-present math "math in real life"—the kind we can see with our eyes, touch with our hands, and feel through our experiences.
Today, we're going to embark on a special journey together. This journey doesn't require airplanes, trains, walking, or cycling. You only need to open your eyes, listen carefully, and think hard to get started! Because our destination isn't some faraway place—it's everything around you: your body, your home, your room, and all the places you pass through every day.
Are you ready? Let's go find where math is hiding!

Math on Our Bodies
Secrets on Our Hands
Put your hands out in front of you and look carefully. What do you see?
That's right! You have two hands. Each hand has 5 fingers, and together you have 10 fingers. Look at your fingers—they're so interesting! Each finger has its own name: thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and pinky. Try this: can you pick things up without your thumb? What can you do without your pinky?
> > Hold a mirror and raise both hands. Look at your fingers in the mirror, then look at your real fingers. Is the number of fingers the same in the mirror and in real life?
Now let's play a little game. Hold up your left hand and fold your fingers one by one: open hand has 5 fingers, fold one down to get 4 fingers; fold another to get 3; keep folding to get 2; finally close all to get 1 finger. Then reverse: start with 1 and open up to 2, 3, 4, and back to 5. Did you discover something? Numbers can get smaller or bigger. Mathematicians gave names to these changes: getting smaller is called "decreasing" or "subtracting," while getting bigger is called "increasing" or "adding."
$$5 - 1 = 4 \quad 4 - 1 = 3 \quad 3 - 1 = 2 \quad 2 - 1 = 1$$ $$1 + 1 = 2 \quad 2 + 1 = 3 \quad 3 + 1 = 4 \quad 4 + 1 = 5$$
Fingers were one of the earliest calculation tools humans ever used! Long, long ago, when people hadn't invented paper, pens, or calculators yet, they would use their fingers to help them count. In English, there's a phrase "to count on one's fingers," which means using fingers to count—it's referring to this ancient and clever method!
Toes and Other Body Parts
Now that we've looked at hands, let's look at feet. Take off your socks and place your feet on the ground. Count carefully: how many toes does your left foot have? How many toes does your right foot have? What about both feet together?
Like your fingers, each foot has 5 toes, and together you have 10 toes. 10 fingers plus 10 toes equals 20! Imagine if human fingers and toes were all connected together like gloves and socks—what would that look like?
Now let's look at other body parts. You have two eyes, two ears, one nose, and one mouth. Eyes help you see, ears help you hear, nose helps you smell, and mouth helps you talk and eat. These organs come in pairs—either 2 or 1. See if you can find how many "2s" and how many "1s"?
The Beauty of Symmetry in Our Bodies
Have you ever noticed that our bodies look strange? Both sides are almost identical! Your left hand and right hand look very similar, and your left foot and right foot are similar too. Your left eye and right eye, left ear and right ear—they're all symmetrical. If you draw a line down the middle of a mirror, the body on the left side of the line and the right side look almost exactly the same.
Mathematicians gave this phenomenon a beautiful name: "symmetry." Symmetry means both sides are exactly the same, or like puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly. Our bodies are a symmetrical masterpiece created by nature.
> 🔮 知识小贴士 (Fun Fact) > > 你知道吗?(Did You Know?) > > Butterfly wings are also symmetrical! If you draw a line down the middle of a butterfly, the patterns on the left wing and right wing are almost exactly the same. This is nature's math!
If you look carefully, you'll discover that body symmetry isn't just on the outside. You also have many symmetrical structures inside. For example, though your heart isn't perfectly symmetrical, it's divided into left and right parts, and both parts are similar in size and function. Nature seems to love symmetry—because in the biological world, symmetry often means health and balance.

Numbers in Our Family
Counting How Many People Are in Our Family
Now let's move our attention from our own bodies to our family. How many people live in your home? Think about it, then count: how many people live in your house?
Usually, a family has a father, a mother, and children. 1 father plus 1 mother plus 1 child equals 3 people. If there are more children, or if you have grandparents living with you, the family will have more people.
$$1\ \text{爸爸} + 1\ \text{妈妈} + 1\ \text{孩子} = 3\ \text{人}$$ $$1\ \text{Dad} + 1\ \text{Mom} + 1\ \text{Child} = 3\ \text{people}$$
Let's do an interesting exercise. Let's say Xiao Hong's family has this situation:
> > Xiao Hong lives together with her mom, dad, grandpa, and grandma. 让我们来数一数: > > How many people are in Xiao Hong's family? Let's count: > > 1. 奶奶 = 1 > > 总共 = 5个人 > > Total = 5 people > > 如果用数学的方式写出来,就是: > > If we write this in math language: > > $$1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5$$
