In the chilly spring dawn of 138 BCE, the young Zhang Qian stood before the Weiyang Palace of the Han capital, Chang’an. Dressed in official dark robes, sword at his side, he tightly gripped the “Han Jie”—a silver staff topped with yak tail hair, symbol of the emperor’s authority. His gaze crossed the towering palace walls, fixed on the distant Western Regions. Emperor Wu of Han had just received him, entrusting an almost impossible mission: to traverse the vast deserts and grasslands controlled by the Xiongnu, seeking the legendary Dayuezhi Kingdom in Central Asia, to persuade them to ally with the Han against the northern Xiongnu cavalry. It was a diplomatic expedition with no detailed maps, no safe routes, and even the destination was uncertain. Zhang Qian took a deep breath; the wind from the steppe carried the scent of dust. “Your servant, Zhang Qian, will not fail His Majesty’s trust!” His oath echoed in the empty square, little knowing that this departure would become a thirteen-year odyssey of wind, snow, life and death, carving a permanent light into the barren Western Regions—what later generations would call “Chuo Kong Xi Yu” (Opening the Path to the Unknown West).

Emperor Wu’s grand strategy was forged in the crucible of constant Xiongnu raids. The northern frontier was in turmoil. Within the court, two factions clashed: the “Attack the Hu” camp, led by Wang Hui, advocated for a decisive military campaign; the “Heqin” (marriage alliance) camp, represented by Han Anguo, argued for continuing the early Han policy of marrying imperial princesses to the Xiongnu Chanyu (khan) to buy temporary peace. But relentless border skirmishes convinced the young Emperor Wu that a passive policy was insufficient. He needed not a temporary truce, but a long-term chess move: to ally with the Western Regions kingdoms west of the Xiongnu, creating a strategic pincer movement to shatter Xiongnu hegemony forever.
It was against this backdrop that Zhang Qian, an ordinary official from Longxi (modern Gansu), known for his “sincerity, simplicity, and eloquence,” was chosen. He was no born general nor a master of military texts, but he possessed a brave and loyal heart. In a secret audience at the Weiyang Palace, Emperor Wu laid out the strategic blueprint clearly: “West of the Xiongnu lie the Dayuezhi, Daxia, Anxi and other kingdoms. Their armies are strong, and they have long-standing feuds with the Xiongnu. If we can send envoys, forge alliances, and attack together, we can cut off the Xiongnu’s left arm.” He appointed Zhang Qian as a “Lang官” (imperial attendant), bestowed upon him the “Han Jie,” and promised: “Should you secure the Dayuezhi’s aid, the Han will reward you handsomely, enfeoff you as a marquis, and share in the glory.”
Zhang Qian’s mission, ostensibly a diplomatic search for an alliance, was fundamentally a state-sponsored “intelligence and route reconnaissance.” What he needed to bring back was not just a treaty, but firsthand knowledge of the Western Regions’ geography, climate, resources, and military strength. This was an act of “Chuo Kong”—literally “chiseling through emptiness”—inscribing the first characters on a blank bamboo slip, drawing the first map in an unknown land.

During the first decade of captivity, Zhang Qian faced a constant psychological battle. The Xiongnu Chanyu, angered by the Han envoy’s intrusion, demanded: “The Han and my Xiongnu are sworn brothers. Why do you secretly send envoys to the Dayuezhi? The Dayuezhi are north of us. Are you trying to relay messages and attack us together?” Zhang Qian was placed under house arrest in the heart of Xiongnu territory. Initially, the Chanyu tried to soften him with fine wine, delicacies, Xiongnu women, and promises of wealth, urging him to abandon his mission. But Zhang Qian “did not dishonor his sovereign’s mandate; he never let go of the ceremonial staff.” Every day, no matter where he was, he held the Han Jie—a symbol of the state. He learned the Xiongnu language, studied their customs, and even took a Xiongnu wife and had a son. Yet, in the quiet of the night, he would caress the staff and gaze southward—toward Chang’an. His loyalty, like the desert poplar, grew stronger against the sandstorms.
After a decade, internal strife among the Xiongnu distracted the Chanyu, and surveillance loosened. Seizing the moment, Zhang Qian, his deputy Gan Fu (a Xiongnu man who later became a loyal Han guide), and a handful of attendants slipped away from the court on a snowy, windy night. Riding Xiongnu horses, they fled. Instead of taking the familiar steppe routes, they chose a more dangerous but less-patrolled path: northward across the vast Gobi Desert of the Mongolian plateau, then west into the Western Regions.
This leg became known as the “Journey of Death.” They traversed the Altai Mountains and the Dzungarian Basin in modern-day Mongolia, facing constant thirst, hunger, and the ever-present threat of Xiongnu pursuit or bandits. Gan Fu’s exceptional wilderness skills—navigating by stars, finding water sources, hunting rabbits—were their lifeline. Once, they went three days without a drop of water; Zhang Qian squeezed the last moisture from mare’s milk and shared it with the weakest companion. His Han Jie, standing firm against the sandstorms, became the team’s spiritual pillar. Miraculously, they reached the first Western Regions city-state—Dayuan (modern Fergana Basin). When Zhang Qian saw the cooking smoke rising from a distant oasis, he knew: the journey of “Chuo Kong” had truly begun.
