China: Our Divine Land
---
Tonight, when you look up at the stars, have you ever wondered what China would look like if we could fly high up in the sky like little birds and look down at our country?
Today, we're going to follow a little explorer on a magical journey across China. We'll start from space, flying over 9.6 million square kilometers of magnificent mountains and rivers. We'll discover why this land called "Shenzhou" (meaning "Divine Land" in Chinese) has tall mountains, deep valleys, wide plains, and rushing rivers.
Are you ready? Buckle up, here we go!

A Little Explorer's Magical Dream
There was a boy named Xiao Shan, and his favorite thing to do was to lie by the window, gazing at the distant mountains. One night, Xiao Shan had a very special dream.
In his dream, Xiao Shan found himself sitting on a soft, fluffy white cloud. The cloud rose higher and higher...
"Wow!" Xiao Shan opened his eyes and found himself flying very, very high in the sky. He looked down and—wow—it was China!
From this high up, Xiao Shan noticed something interesting: in the western part, there were many very tall mountains with white "hats" on top—those were snow and ice that never melted! As he looked eastward, the mountains gradually got shorter, and there were more and more plains. Further east, he saw a long, sparkling ribbon—that was the Yangtze River! Finally, he saw the blue sea.
"How strange," Xiao Shan scratched his head, "why are the western mountains so tall and the eastern mountains so short? Why do all the big rivers flow from west to east?"
With these questions, the little explorer began his journey of discovery. And the first secret we're going to tell him is about China's "Three-Step Terrain."

Looking at China from Space: Where Is Our Home?
First, let's get to know where our home—China—is located on Earth.
Where Is China Located?
If you put a globe in front of you, you'll see a very large country on the eastern side of Asia and the western coast of the Pacific Ocean—and that's China!
Asia is the largest continent in the world, and China is located in the eastern part of Asia. The shape of our country looks like a proud rooster standing tall with its chest out. Look carefully—it's facing east, as if greeting the rising sun every day!
China is located in the eastern part of Asia, on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean. Let's remember this sentence in English: "China is in East Asia, on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean."
China is in East Asia, on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean."*
How Big Is China?
Do you know how big China is?
9.6 million square kilometers—this is our country's land area! This means if you walked 50 kilometers every day, it would take you 530 full years to walk across all of China!
In China, we often use "9.6 million square kilometers" to represent our land area. But what does this number mean in the world?
China is the third largest country in the world! The first is Russia (17.1 million square kilometers), the second is Canada (9.98 million square kilometers), the third is China (9.6 million square kilometers), and the fourth is the United States.
Imagine this: the land area of China is about the same as one million Beijing cities! Or 17 million football fields lined up side by side! Isn't that amazing?
Our Neighbors
China is so big, of course it has many neighbors!
To the north and northeast, China borders Russia and Mongolia; to the west, China is adjacent to countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India; to the south, China borders Nepal, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. To the east and southeast, China faces countries like Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines across the sea.
With so many neighbors, everyone helps each other, just like one big family!
Now the little explorer knows where China is and how big it is. Next, we're going to show him China's most amazing terrain feature—the Three-Step Terrain!

The Secret of China's Terrain: The Three-Step Terrain
Before we begin exploring, let's look at a diagram to see how China's Three-Step Terrain is distributed.
```mermaid flowchart TD A[中国地形三级阶梯] --> B[第一阶梯
青藏高原
海拔4000米以上] A --> C[第二阶梯
高原·盆地
海拔1000-2000米] A --> D[第三阶梯
平原·丘陵
海拔500米以下]
从这张图上,你可以清楚地看到,中国的地形就像一个大大的台阶,从西到东,一级比一级低。这就是地理学家们说的“三级阶梯”!
From this diagram, you can clearly see that China's terrain is like a giant staircase, getting lower and lower from west to east. This is what geographers call the "Three-Step Terrain"!
第一级阶梯:世界屋脊
The First Step: Roof of the World
小探险家首先来到的地方,是中国的西部——青藏高原。
The first place the little explorer came to was western China—the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
青藏高原被人们称为“世界屋脊”,因为它是世界上最高的高原,平均海拔超过4000米!这是什么概念呢?如果你站在海拔4000米的地方,你会发现呼吸变得很困难,因为空气变得稀薄了。
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is called the "Roof of the World" because it's the highest plateau on Earth, with an average elevation exceeding 4,000 meters! What does this mean? If you stand at an elevation of 4,000 meters, you'll find it hard to breathe because the air becomes thin.
想象一下,如果把北京市的最高楼——中国尊(海拔约50米)搬到青藏高原上,你需要叠起80座中国尊那么高的楼,才能和青藏高原一样高!
Imagine if the tallest building in Beijing—China Zun (about 50 meters above sea level)—were moved to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. You would need to stack 80 buildings of that height just to match the plateau's elevation!
在青藏高原上,有世界上最高的山峰——珠穆朗玛峰,海拔8848.86米。珠穆朗玛峰的峰顶常年被冰雪覆盖,就像戴了一顶闪闪发亮的白色皇冠。
On the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau stands the world's highest mountain—Mount Everest, with an elevation of 8,848.86 meters. The summit of Mount Everest is covered with snow and ice year-round, like wearing a sparkling white crown.
青藏高原的南边,有一排排高大雄伟的山脉,叫做喜马拉雅山脉。喜马拉雅山脉就像一堵巨大的冰雪长城,阻挡着来自印度洋的暖湿气流。
To the south of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau stands a row of tall and majestic mountains called the Himalayan Mountains. The Himalayas are like a giant wall of ice and snow, blocking warm and moist air currents from the Indian Ocean.
