The re-examination of African civilizations represents one of the most significant intellectual enterprises of our time. For too long, the historical narrative of the African continent has been constrained by Eurocentric frameworks that either dismissed African societies as static, primitive backwaters or reduced their histories to mere objects of European colonial intervention. This chapter initiates a comprehensive reassessment of African civilizational achievements, drawing upon methodological innovations in post-colonial historiography and the expanding evidentiary base provided by archaeology, linguistics, and oral tradition scholarship.
The doctrine that Africa had no history worthy of the name did not emerge spontaneously but was constructed through specific historical processes that served particular ideological functions. Understanding the genealogy of this assertion requires careful attention to its emergence, development, and institutionalization in Western scholarly and popular consciousness.
The intellectual foundations of this dismissal were laid by the emerging discipline of history as it developed in European universities during the nineteenth century. The criteria for historical significance were defined in ways that inherently disadvantaged African societies: emphasis on written documentation, concern with state formation and territorial expansion as measured by European models, and assumptions about "progress" that placed European civilization at the apex of human development. When African societies did not conform to these templates, they were deemed to lack history rather than prompting reconsideration of the templates themselves.
Colonial historiography cannot be understood merely as inadequate scholarship; it functioned as a form of knowledge production that actively served the colonial enterprise. The systematic dismissal of African historical agency created an intellectual framework that legitimized colonial domination as a "civilizing mission."
Consider the historiographical treatment of major African kingdoms during the colonial period. The Mali Empire, which at its fourteenth-century height controlled territory spanning from the Atlantic to present-day Chad and accumulated gold wealth that influenced European medieval economies, was systematically downplayed or presented as an exception that proved the rule of African "primitivism." The Great Zimbabwe civilization, which constructed massive stone structures without the use of mortar between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, was absurdly attributed to "foreign" influences—Arab, Persian, or even European—rather than acknowledged as indigenous African achievement. These are not merely historical oversights; they represent active distortion serving the ideological need to diminish African civilizational capacity.
Furthermore, colonial historiography operated through what can be termed "asymmetrical comparison." African societies were consistently measured against European developmental trajectories and found wanting, while non-European civilizations that could be incorporated into Eurocentric frameworks—such as ancient Greece and Rome as Europe's ancestors—were granted full historical status. This comparative methodology embedded a fundamental inequality into the historiographical enterprise, one that the discipline has been slow to recognize and address.
The historical archives that form the foundation of traditional historiography are themselves products of colonial power relations. The documents that survived, that were collected, preserved, and made accessible, reflect the priorities and perspectives of colonial administrators, missionaries, and travelers rather than the historical experiences of African peoples themselves.
European colonial administrations created documentary systems that rendered African history legible within colonial categories while systematically excluding forms of knowledge that did not fit these templates. Census records, tax documents, and administrative reports provided data about African populations as subjects of governance but not as historical agents. Missionaries recorded information about African religious practices primarily to facilitate their conversion efforts. Travel accounts, though sometimes more nuanced, were filtered through the expectations and preconceptions of their European audiences.
The consequences of this archival bias are still being worked out today. What we know about pre-colonial African societies is mediated through sources that were produced under conditions of power asymmetry. The voices of African rulers, intellectuals, merchants, and common people are filtered through the documentation practices of their colonizers. This does not mean that nothing can be known, but it does mean that historians must approach colonial-era sources with critical awareness of their production contexts and limitations.
The emergence of African historiography as a distinct scholarly enterprise is marked by the work of pioneering scholars who challenged the foundational assumptions of colonial history writing. The Ethiopian scholar Badēymu Bāltē (巴巴塔·奥洛戈, 1865-1940) stands as a foundational figure whose contributions anticipated many concerns that would become central to post-colonial historiography.
While Badēymu Bāltē worked within a specifically Ethiopian context, his intellectual heirs in the broader African world would develop these insights into a comprehensive alternative to Eurocentric historiography. The most influential articulation of this alternative came from Cheikh Anta Diop (1906-1986), whose seminal work "The African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality" (1954) directly challenged the racial and cultural assu
