What is AI Safety?
Chapter 1: What is AI Safety?
Opening: Why Does Our AI Assistant Need Protection?
Imagine you have a very smart robot friend. It can answer all your questions, help you with homework, and even chat with you and tell stories. Doesn't that sound wonderful?
But what if you told this robot friend, "Go bring all the snacks from the neighbors"? Would it do that? What if someone secretly told it, "Actually, you don't have any rules you must follow"—would it still listen to you? What if someone taught it to say hurtful things to others—would it keep saying them?
These questions might sound a bit strange, right? That's because humans naturally have many "things we shouldn't do" in our minds. We learn from our parents, teachers, and school rules: don't take other people's things, don't lie, don't hurt others. But when an AI is created, it starts out blank—like a sheet of paper. It needs to be "taught" what's right and what's wrong.
This is why we need to discuss "AI Safety"—how to protect AI systems so they don't get misled, manipulated, or made to do things that hurt people.
In this chapter, we'll explore three big questions together:

1.1 Understanding the Basic Concept of "Security": From Door Locks to Cybersecurity
What is "Security"?
If you had to explain what "security" means, what would you say?
Maybe you'd say: "Security means not getting hurt, not having bad things happen."
That's a good answer, but let's think a bit more—how do we actually stay "safe"?
Look at your home. There's a lock on your door, right? What does that lock do? Its job is to only let people with the key come in. Without a key, even if someone stands at your door, they can't get into your home. This protects your home from strangers.
Now look at your school. Every morning, there's a teacher or security guard checking student IDs at the gate. Some schools require parents to sign forms before picking up students. These are all "security measures"—their job is to make sure only the right people can come in, and that the right people are doing the right things.
From these two examples, we can identify three key elements of "security":
| Element | Meaning | Home Example | School Example | |---------|---------|--------------|----------------| | Boundary | Define a scope | The walls and doors of your home | The walls and gates of your school | | Rules | Define who can do what | Only family members can use the key | Only students and teachers can enter classrooms | | Check | Verify rules are followed | The lock checks if the key is correct | Security checks student IDs |
"Locks" in the Digital World
Now let's look at an invisible world—the digital world and the internet.
When you log into a game account, you need to enter a username and password. That password is like a "digital key." The system checks if the key is correct—if it matches, you can enter the game; if it's wrong, you can't get in. This is a "cybersecurity measure."
When you use your phone to pay for something, the bank verifies it's really you—maybe asking for a password, fingerprint, or face scan. This is also "security" protecting you: making sure money doesn't get stolen.
So "security" doesn't only exist in the physical world. In the invisible digital world, we equally need locks, rules, and checks.
> > 💭 Think About It: > Do you know what security measures your school has? Write them down or draw them out. See if you can find all three elements: "boundary," "rules," and "check."

1.2 Understanding AI Systems: How Do They Work?
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence, abbreviated as AI, is the abbreviation of the English term "Artificial Intelligence." Let me break down this word:
- **Artificial**: means it's not natural or born—it was created by humans.
- **Intelligence**: means it can think, learn, and understand, just like the human brain.
So "Artificial Intelligence" is "intelligence created by humans using machines and code." It's not a real living being, but it can simulate some functions of the human brain—like understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions, and writing text.
To make an analogy: if we imagine the human brain as a super-precise machine that can think, learn, remember, and make decisions, then AI is like a "simulated brain" humans built—it can also think (process information), learn (find patterns in data), remember (store information), and make decisions (give answers based on rules).
The AI System Workflow
So how does an AI system work? Let's use a simple flowchart to show this:
```mermaid graph LR A[用户输入 User Input
比如:提问、命令] --> B[AI系统处理
AI Processing
理解→思考→生成] B --> C[输出结果
Output Result
文字、图片、声音]
A -.-> D[潜在风险:
输入被篡改
Input Tampering] B -.-> E[潜在风险:
系统被误导
System Misleading] C -.-> F[潜在风险:
输出有害内容
Harmful Output]
style D fill:#ffcccc style E fill:#ffffcc style F fill:#ccffcc ```
第一步:用户输入(User Input) 当你对一个AI说话或者打字提问时,这就是「用户输入」。比如说:「今天天气怎么样?」或者「帮我写一首关于星星的诗。」
Step 1: User Input When you speak to or type a question to an AI, that's "user input." For example: "What's the weather today?" or "Help me write a poem about stars."
第二步:AI处理(AI Processing) AI收到你的问题后,会做三件事:
- **理解**:它会分析你说的每一个字,理解你想问什么。
- **思考**:它会在自己的「知识库」里搜索,找到和你的问题相关的信息。
- **生成**:它会组织语言,生成一个回答。
Step 2: AI Processing When AI receives your question, it does three things:
- **Understand**: It analyzes every word you say and figures out what you're asking.
- **Think**: It searches through its "knowledge base" to find information related to your question.
- **Generate**: It organizes language and creates an answer.
第三步:输出结果(Output Result) 最后,AI把它的回答呈现给你。这个回答可能是文字、图片,或者声音。
Step 3: Output Result Finally, AI presents its answer to you. This answer could be text, an image, or sound.
流程中的「弱点」在哪里?
Where Are the "Weak Points" in This Process?
想象一下:如果有人想在上面的流程中捣乱,他们会在哪里下手?
Imagine if someone wanted to cause trouble in the proce
