Chapter 1: The Birth of the Silk Road — The Epic Journey of Zhang Qian
---
In the early hours of a morning in the second century BCE, on the banks of the Wei River outside the city of Chang'an, a delegation of more than one hundred people was making final preparations for departure. Among them were battle-hardened warriors, guides familiar with the languages of the Western Regions, and scholars responsible for translation. At the front of the group, a banner embroidered with Chinese characters fluttered gently in the morning breeze. Among these people stood a tall, middle-aged man with a resolute gaze—his name was Zhang Qian. This name, for the next two thousand years, would forever be bound together with a great trade route connecting East and West.
More than two thousand years ago, China was experiencing an unprecedented era of greatness. After Liu Bang, the founding emperor of the Han Dynasty, emerged victorious from the flames of the Chu-Han Conflict, he established the Han Dynasty. Through several generations of emperors focused on recovery and development, by the time Emperor Wu (Liu Che) ascended the throne, the Han Dynasty had accumulated sufficient national strength to confront its northern adversary. However, a threat from the grasslands constantly loomed like dark clouds over the empire's northern frontier—this threat was the powerful Xiongnu Empire.
The Xiongnu were nomadic people living on the Mongolian Plateau. They rode horses and shot arrows, moved swift as the wind, and survived by raiding. Every autumn and winter, when the harvest was complete in the Central Plains, Xiongnu cavalry would surge southward like a tide, burning villages, slaughtering people, and plundering grain and valuables. The border residents of the Han Dynasty lived in constant fear; countless families were torn apart, countless villages reduced to ashes. A famous frontier poet once wrote: "If only the dragon-city Flying General were here, he would never let the Hu horses cross the Yin Mountains." This verse expressed the people's longing for peace and the difficulty of resisting Xiongnu invasions.
Emperor Wu Liu Che was a ruler of extraordinary talent and ambition. When he ascended the throne, he was only sixteen years old, yet he displayed remarkable courage and foresight. He was unwilling to let the Han Dynasty remain perpetually on the defensive, and he resolved to thoroughly resolve the Xiongnu threat. During his reign, he sent numerous large armies north to attack the Xiongnu, giving rise to famous military commanders like Wei Qing and Huo Qubing. However, Emperor Wu knew well that military force alone could not completely eliminate a vast, highly mobile nomadic people. He began to consider another strategy: unite with other nations oppressed by the Xiongnu and diplomatically isolate them.
Against this historical backdrop, a bold plan gradually took shape in Emperor Wu's mind. He had heard that to the west of the Xiongnu, there existed several powerful nations. Among them was a country called Dayuan (Ferghana), which had once engaged in fierce conflicts with the Xiongnu. The king of Dayuan's skull had even been made into a drinking cup by the Xiongnu Chanyu—an eternally unhealable national and personal grievance. Emperor Wu thought: if envoys could be sent to contact Dayuan and persuade them to form an alliance with the Han Dynasty, jointly attacking the Xiongnu from both sides, then the northern threat could be readily solved.
However, sending envoys to Dayuan was no easy task. From Chang'an to the Western Regions, the journey spanned thousands of miles, crossing vast deserts and towering mountains. Moreover, most of this route was under Xiongnu control. This meant the envoys would have to face not only harsh natural environments but also constant vigilance against Xiongnu pursuit and capture.
In 138 BCE, Emperor Wu ordered the recruitment of brave individuals willing to serve as envoys to the Western Regions. When this news spread, the entire city of Chang'an was buzzing with excitement. However, when people learned of the dangers involved, many hesitated and withdrew. The closest route from Chang'an to Dayuan required passing through Xiongnu territory, making the chance of returning alive nearly zero. No one wanted to risk their life on such a dangerous journey.
Just as the court was at a loss, a young official named Zhang Qian stepped forward. Zhang Qian was from Hanzhong Chenggu (modern Chenggu County, Shaanxi). He came from an unremarkable background, merely a minor palace official serving as a Lang (attendant officer). Although the rank of Lang was not high, it provided opportunities to be near the emperor and participate in discussions on national affairs. When Zhang Qian learned that the court was recruiting envoys for a mission to the Western Regions, he did not hesitate for a moment and volunteered.
It is said that Emperor Wu personally summoned Zhang Qian to assess this young man's ability and determination. In the imperial study, the emperor asked Zhang Qian: "The journey to the Western Regions is long and perilous. Life and death are uncertain. Are you aware of the dangers involved?" Zhang Qian bowed and replied: "Your servant is aware. But a true man standing between heaven and earth should establish achievements and serve his country. If this mission can bring lasting peace to the Han-Xiongnu border, your servant would not hesitate to die a hundred deaths!" Delighted, Emperor Wu immediately appointed Zhang Qian as the chief envoy, leading the mission to the Western Regions.
Besides Zhang Qian, another crucial figure joined the mission—Guan Fu. Guan Fu was originally from Xiongnu descent but later surrendered to the Han Dynasty and became a guide and translator in the Han army. He was fluent in Xiongnu and Western Regions languages and possessed thorough knowledge of grassland survival skills. Having such an experienced guide accompanying him, Zhang Qian's westward journey had at least one more layer of security.
In the late autumn of 138 BCE, Zhang Qian led a delegation of more than one hundred people, departing from the west gate of Chang'an, embarking on this journey filled with uncertainty. The citizens of Chang'an crowded the streets to watch this departing team. Some curiously asked where they were
