On November 11, 2019, at precisely 0:00:00 midnight, in a technology operations room of Alibaba Group in Hangzhou, China, the air was thick with an almost tangible tension. On the massive electronic display, numbers were jumping faster than ever before—428,000, 456,000, 487,000—orders per second. This number had quadrupled in just twelve minutes, and now it continued to climb.
Li Ming (pseudonym), chief architect of the order system, sat behind the central console. He had already worked eighteen consecutive hours. At this moment, his fingers hovered above the keyboard, his gaze locked on the steep curve climbing on the screen. Ten years ago, he was just a junior engineer responsible for optimizing systems handling a few thousand orders daily. The world was simple then—one request in, one response out, everything in orderly sequence. But tonight, he would face half a million requests per second, each carrying genuine commercial intent, each connected to a real consumer's anticipation.
Just three minutes ago, the system's alarm sounded. The database connection pool's waiting queue began accumulating; the designed capacity was being exceeded. Cache hit rates started declining, dropping from a stable 99.2% to 97.8%. Each percentage point meant thousands of additional database accesses, and under such load, this could trigger catastrophic chain reactions. Three minutes ago, the system could handle everything with ease; now, the entire architecture was being pushed to its limits.
Li Ming issued a rapid sequence of commands: "Activate elastic scaling plan B, prioritize core order placement. Disable non-critical service database writes, switch to async queues." His voice was steady and commanding, but the beads of sweat on his forehead betrayed the pressure beneath. This wasn't his first Double Eleven traffic surge, but every time felt like walking a tightrope over a cliff.
Meanwhile, in another corner of the system, Zhang Wei, responsible for the inventory service, monitored another critical metric—the contention rate for distributed locks. The current contention rate had reached 15%, meaning that out of every 100 inventory deduction operations, 15 needed to wait for other operations to release locks. Normally, this number was near zero; but during midnight promotions, a surge of users attempted to purchase the same batch of limited products, making lock contention inevitable. If handled poorly, this contention would cause massive request timeouts, resulting in a catastrophic drop in user experience.
时钟指向零点十二分,订单数达到了惊人的523,000 TPS(Transactions Per Second,每秒事务数)。
The clock struck 00:12. Orders reached a staggering 523,000 TPS (Transactions Per Second). This number meant that in the past single second, the system completed 523,000 complete order processing flows—from user clicking "place order," to inventory verification, to payment deduction, to order persistence, to inventory update, to points allocation, to message notification. Every flow involved coordination across multiple services, and every coordination could become a bottleneck.
At this critical moment, the system's adaptive rate-limiting module automatically triggered its third layer of protection. By analyzing request characteristics in real-time, the system identified numerous abnormal requests—including suspected script-based bulk ordering, duplicate submissions, malicious crawlers, and more. These requests were precisely intercepted and diverted to dedicated queues, protecting the system from overload while maximizing genuine users' order experiences.
By 00:32, traffic began gradually declining, and system metrics stabilized. Li Ming exhaled deeply and leaned back in his chair. They had won this battle—or rather, won it temporarily. Because he knew this was only the beginning. With rapid business growth, the next Double Eleven might see doubled traffic; with ever-increasing user expectations, any delay could mean user churn; with evolving competitive landscapes, system availability had shifted from "nice to have" to "must have."
This midnight story is a reality every high-concurrency system engineer must face. It is not an ideal scenario from a textbook but a real production environment battle against probability, a race against time, and a breakthrough against one's own limits.
并发的本质:从哲学到工程 {#the-essence-of-concurrency}
To understand high-concurrency systems, we must first return to a more fundamental question: What is concurrency? Why is it so crucial, yet so difficult to master?
From a philosophical perspective, concurrency is a state of existence—multiple independent events occurring simultaneously, or at least appearing to occur simultaneously. The universe itself is concurrent: countless galaxies rotate at once, billions of brains think simultaneously, and the entire world operates countless parallel processes at every moment. This ubiquitous parallelism is a fundamental characteristic of our world.
However, human technological development has long followed a serial path. Early computing devices were single-task—one program had to finish before the next could run. This had historical inevitability: early computing resources were extremely scarce, storage measured in bytes, processing power in kilohertz. Under such constraints, serial processing was the most natural choice.
The earliest electronic computer, ENIAC, could only perform 5,000 additions per second, and programming required manually setting hundreds of switches and cables. At that time, engineers wouldn't even think of the word "concurrency"—they were still racking their brains over how to make machines run reliably.
The turning point came in the 1960s. With the emergence of integrated circuits, computing power began growing exponentially. But more importantly, people began realizing a profound contradiction: human demand for computing was growing faster than hardware performance improvements. This contradiction drove breakthroughs in two directions: continuously improving single-core processor performance, and beginning to explore the possibility of running multiple tasks simultaneously on the same machine.
