Chapter 1: What Is Negotiation? — Little Decisions in Life
---
Have you ever been in a situation like this: It's a Saturday morning, and you're all set to watch your favorite cartoon *Paw Patrol*, but your older brother or sister wants to watch *Octonauts*. Both of you are holding onto the remote control, and neither wants to give in. Do you ever think to yourself, "Wouldn't it be nice if there was a way for us to not argue and still enjoy watching TV together?"
Actually, what you're experiencing in that moment is something really interesting — even though you don't know its name yet, it's called "negotiation" (谈判/Negotiation). Negotiation isn't just for adults, and it doesn't only happen in serious meeting rooms. Negotiation happens all the time in our daily lives, from deciding what to wear in the morning, to discussing who takes turns being classroom monitor with your classmates, to deciding what games to play with your best friends after school. Today, let's get to know this "little helper" in our lives — negotiation!
What Is Negotiation?
Let's play a little game first. Close your eyes and imagine this scenario:
> > 🏠 It's Friday, and Xiaoming and Xiaohong come home together after school. Their mom has prepared snacks, and they have 30 minutes of break time before they need to do their homework.
> > 📺 Xiaoming wants to watch some TV to relax.
> > 📚 Xiaohong wants to work on her homework first, because her math assignment is a bit difficult, and she wants to finish it while the material is still fresh in her mind.
> > 🍎 They're both hungry and want to eat the snacks mom prepared.
You see, in such an ordinary afternoon after school, there are already many things that need to be decided. If everyone only thinks about themselves, saying "I want to do this" and "I don't want to do that," the house might turn into a "fighting zone," and mom would have a headache too. But what if they could talk nicely, share their thoughts with each other, and then work together to find a solution everyone can accept?
This is negotiation! Negotiation is when two or more people want different things, so they sit down together, talk it over, and come up with a solution that makes everyone happy or at least okay with it.
Negotiation Is Not Arguing
Many kids might think, "Negotiation? Isn't that just arguing?" Actually, negotiation and arguing are completely different things!
Let's look at the differences between them:
| 特征 Feature | 争吵 Arguing | 谈判 Negotiation | |-------------|--------------|------------------| | 说话方式 Way of speaking | 大声喊叫、互相指责 Shouting, blaming each other | 心平气和、有礼貌地说话 Speaking calmly, politely | | 目标 Goal | “我一定要赢!” "I must win!" "Can we all be happy?" One side wins, the other feels angry or upset | 找到一个大家都能接受的办法 Everyone finds a solution they can accept | | 氛围 Atmosphere | 紧张、让人不舒服 Tense, uncomfortable | 轻松、让人感觉良好 Relaxed, feeling good | | 说的话 Things said | “你总是这样!” "You always do this!" "You're so selfish!" "I would like... what do you think?" "Could we...?" |
Negotiation Is Not "Win or Lose"
Some kids might think, "Then is negotiation about taking turns winning? You win today, I win tomorrow?" That's not quite right either!
Imagine you and your younger sibling are playing a game, and you need to decide who gets to play with the new toy first. You agree on "you go first today, I'll go first tomorrow," which seems fair, right? But what if today there's an especially important toy, like your birthday present, and your sibling's toy is just an ordinary little car? Do you think this arrangement is still fair?
Real negotiation isn't just about taking turns winning. It's about working together to find a result that's good for everyone. It's like mom cutting the cake — not everyone gets the exact same size piece, but everyone gets a piece they want, and everyone enjoys eating it.
Negotiation Scenarios in Daily Life
Negotiation is everywhere in life. Let's look at some "negotiation moments" that you might have already experienced but didn't realize:
Scenario 1: Cartoon Time
You and your siblings want to watch different cartoons. Here's how you can negotiate:
I want to watch *Peppa Pig* today because it's Peppa Pig day!" (Express your idea)
But I really want to watch *Paw Patrol* because today is the rescue mission episode!" (Brother shares his idea)
Mom says, "Can you two think of a way so you can both watch the shows you want?" (Guiding them to find solutions)
> 💡 解决办法可能是: > > - 这次先看《汪汪队》,下次看《小猪佩奇》 > - 两个人一起看,先看一集《小猪佩奇》,再看一集《汪汪队》 > - 这次看《汪汪队》10分钟,然后换《小猪佩奇》10分钟 > > 💡 Possible solutions: > - This time we watch *Paw Patrol* first, next time we watch *Peppa Pig* > - Watch one together: first an episode of *Peppa Pig*, then an episode of *Paw Patrol* > - Watch *Paw Patrol* for 10 minutes this time, then switch to *Peppa Pig* for 10 minutes
Scenario 2: What to Wear
In the morning, you and mom disagree about what to wear:
I want to wear my princess dress to school today!" (You're very insistent)
> > 👩 "But you have PE class today, and it's inconvenient to run in a skirt," mom says.
But I really want to wear a skirt..." (You feel a bit wronged)
> > 👩 "I understand how you feel about wanting to wear a pretty dress. Here's what we can do — wear your sports clothes to school today, and you can change into the dress after PE class. That way both wishes come true. What do you think?"
Really? That's great!" (You happily accept this solution)
You see, this is a great example of negotiation! Mom didn't just say "no," she first understood your feelings, then proposed a solution that both people could accept.
Scenario 3: Who Chooses the TV Program
In the evening, the whole family is watching TV together. You want to watch *Animal World*, dad wants to watch the news, and mom wants to watch a drama:
This situation might seem difficult, but the whole family can work together:
I want to watch *Animal World* because today's episode is about the ocean world, dolphins and whales!" (Your reason)
> > 👨 "The news might have reports
