Have you ever had this experience? On weekends, when your parents drive to a mall for dinner, the underground parking lot is dimly lit and the parking spaces are crooked. You thought you would have to watch your dad reverse for more than ten minutes, but he pressed a button on the steering wheel, scrolled through short videos while sitting in the driver’s seat, and the car “swooshed” into the parking space accurately on its own, even steering more steadily than when you reverse manually?
But what exactly is autonomous driving? Simply put, it is a technology that allows cars to “see” the road, “think” about decisions, and “move” to complete driving without a person constantly watching the road. Does it sound like a scene from a sci-fi movie? In fact, it has long since walked off the big screen and into your life.
To understand how “magical” autonomous driving is, we first need to understand the globally accepted autonomous driving classification standard — this standard was launched by SAE International (originally the Society of Automotive Engineers) in 2014, dividing autonomous driving into 6 levels from “no human involvement at all” to “no human needed at all”, commonly known as L0 to L5, with huge differences in capabilities between each level:
No autonomous driving functions, all driving operations are fully controlled by humans | 爸妈开了10年的老燃油车,倒车、刹车、打方向全靠自己 Old fuel cars driven by parents for 10 years, reversing, braking, and steering all rely on the driver | 驾驶员 Driver | | L1 | Driver Assistance 驾驶辅助 | 只能控制一个驾驶功能(比如要么控方向,要么控速度),人必须全程盯着 Only one driving function can be controlled (either steering or speed), and the driver must watch the road at all times | 很多老车带的定速巡航(Cruise Control),只能固定车速,刹车、打方向还是要人做 Many old cars with cruise control, which can only fix the speed, braking and steering still need to be done by the driver | 驾驶员 Driver | | L2 | Partial Driving Automation 部分驾驶自动化 | 可以同时控制方向和速度,比如自动跟车、车道保持,但人必须随时准备接管,不能分心 Can control both steering and speed at the same time, such as automatic following and lane keeping, but the driver must be ready to take over at any time and cannot be distracted | 现在大部分新能源车带的ACC自适应巡航+LKA车道保持,高速上可以自动跟着前车走、不压线,但手不能离开方向盘;小鹏的NGP、理想的AD Max都是L2级的高速领航功能,能自动变道、超车、下匝道,但还是要人盯着 Most new energy vehicles now come with ACC adaptive cruise control + LKA lane keeping assist, which can automatically follow the front car and not cross the line on the highway, but hands cannot leave the steering wheel; XPENG’s NGP and Li Auto’s AD Max are all L2-level highway navigation functions that can automatically change lanes, overtake, and exit ramps, but still require human monitoring | 驾驶员 Driver | | L3 | Conditional Driving Automation 有条件驾驶自动化 | 在特定场景(比如封闭高速、城市快速路)下可以完全不用人控制,人可以做别的事,但系统如果请求接管,人必须马上回应 In specific scenarios (such as closed highways, urban expressways), the car can be fully controlled without human intervention, and the driver can do other things, but when the system requests takeover, the driver must respond immediately | 2023年国内已经上市的奔驰DRIVE PILOT系统,在德国高速车速不超过60km/h、路况良好的情况下可以放开手喝奶茶、看视频,遇到施工路段系统会提醒你接管;国内也有部分车型在特定高速路段支持L3级功能 The Mercedes DRIVE PILOT system launched in China in 2023 can let go of your hands to drink milk tea and watch videos when the speed on German highways does not exceed 60km/h and the road conditions are good, and the system will remind you to take over when you encounter a construction section; some domestic models also support L3-level functions on specific highway sections | 车企+驾驶员 混合责任 Mixed responsibility between car manufacturer and driver | | L4 | High Driving Automation In specific areas (such as parks, airports, designated urban roads), no human is needed at all, even the steering wheel does not need to be touched, and the car can pull over by itself even if the system fails | 现在在北京、上海、广州、深圳等15个以上城市跑的无人驾驶出租车(Robotaxi),比如百度的萝卜快跑、小马智行的PonyPilot,车上没有司机,你扫码就能坐;特斯拉2024年发布的Cybercab就是L4级无人驾驶出租车,连方向盘和油门刹车都没有 Unmanned taxis (Robotaxi) running in more than 15 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen now, such as Baidu’s Apollo Go and Pony.ai’s PonyPilot, there is no driver in the car, you can take it by scanning the code; Tesla’s Cybercab released in 2024 is an L4-level unmanned taxi without steering wheels, throttles or brakes |
二、为什么L3到L4是自动驾驶的“成人礼”?/ Why Is the Transition from L3 to L4 the “Coming-of-Age Ceremony” for Autonomous Driving?
Core Values of Autonomous Driving: More Than Just “Not Driving Yourself”
Safety: Saving Hundreds of Thousands of Lives Every Year
Efficiency: Saving Your Time Stuck in Traffic
Barrier-Free Travel: Letting Everyone Travel Freely
Environmental Protection: Helping Reduce Carbon Emissions for the Earth
