Have you ever wondered if it will rain tomorrow, or if there will be a test next week, or if you can go to the beach this summer? Everyone, as they grow up, has moments when they really want to know what comes next. This curiosity about "what happens next" is actually something that started a very, very long time ago.

Imagine standing on a hill thousands of years ago, looking up at a sky full of twinkling stars. No electricity, no streetlights, just the beautiful darkness dotted with thousands of bright dots. What would you think? What would you wonder?
Thousands of years ago, when humans didn't have electricity, cars, or smartphones, the world became very dark every night. But when they looked up, the sky was full of twinkling stars! People back then could see the beautiful starry sky that we rarely get to see nowadays.
Those stars, the moon, and occasional shooting stars fascinated ancient people. They began observing the sky every day, recording when the sun rose and set, watching the moon change from a thin crescent to a full moon, then back again. They discovered that these changes in the sky seemed very regular, like a giant clock.
Gradually, they discovered a secret: if you carefully observed the patterns of the stars and moon, you could know when to plant crops, when to harvest, and when to prepare for winter! This magical ability to "predict" made life a little easier.

Modern scientists tell us there are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe, with hundreds of billions of stars in each galaxy. But in ancient times, without telescopes or spaceships, how did ancient people "see" the future?
It turns out they had their own "crystal balls"! These weren't made of transparent crystal, but rather all sorts of natural objects.
Imagine you have a cute little turtle. Would you ever think to use its shell to guess the future? Long ago in China, people during the Shang Dynasty did exactly that! They had a special method of divination called "Oracle Bone Script."
They would first carve a question onto a turtle's plastron or a cow's shoulder bone, questions like "Will it rain tomorrow?" or "Will we have a good harvest this year?" Then they would burn the bone. During the burning process, cracks would appear on the bone, like mysterious pictures. The diviner would carefully observe these cracks and then tell you the answer!
> 💡 Fun Fact: > Oracle Bone Script is the earliest known mature writing system in China. More than 100,000 oracle bones have been discovered! These bones are now collected in museums as precious historical artifacts. By studying these oracle bones, archaeologists can not only learn how ancient people divined, but also understand what life was like for Chinese people over 3,000 years ago!
On the other side of the Earth, on the ancient land of Iraq, lived a people called the Babylonians. They didn't have oracle bones, but they had something even more amazing—an incredible ability to observe the stars!
The Babylonians built special towers for watching stars, called "observatories." They spent hundreds of years, every night, observing the stars, recording where they rose and where they set. They discovered that some stars seemed to "walk around," unlike other stars that stayed in the same position. These "walking stars" are what we now call "planets," including Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
The Babylonian priests believed that the stars in the sky were like expressions of the gods. Each star represented a god, and the movement of the stars was the gods speaking! So if you could read the language of the stars, you could know what the gods were thinking, which meant knowing what would happen in the future.
> 💡 Fun Fact: > The "Zodiac" that we talk about now (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc.) was first invented by the Babylonians! They divided the sky into twelve sections, each represented by an animal or figure. That's why when we celebrate birthdays now, we say what zodiac sign we are—this tradition is over four thousand years old!
If you've heard of the Olympics, then you definitely know about ancient Greece. Because the modern Olympics originated from ancient Greece. The ancient Greeks were very smart. They not only invented a lot of math and science knowledge, but also built many beautiful temples.
In Greece, there was a very famous place called Delphi, where there was a temple dedicated to the sun god Apollo. Legend has it that in the temple, there was a female priestess called the Pythia. She sat on a three-legged stool with a deep pit of smoke in front of her. It was said that the smoke contained the breath of the gods. When she breathed in this smoke, she would enter a trance-like state and begin to speak oracles—the words of the gods.
But the prophecies from the Pythia were never very clear. They were often like riddles, requiring the priests to carefully interpret them to understand their meaning. For example, once the Pythia said: "The Persians are coming, but a mule will defeat them." No one understood what this meant. It wasn't until later, when the Persian Empire was defeated by a man named Alexander the Great, that people understood. The "mule" referred to Alexander the Great—his father was Macedonian and his mother was Persian, so he was like a hybrid mule.

Now you understand what divination is all about. Ancient people guessed the future by observing nature, understanding the sky, and interpreting the will of the gods. But in history, some prophecy stories are truly amazing. Let's listen to a few!
In France, there was a very famous prophet named Michel de Nostredame, who lived about 500 years ago in the 16th century. He wrote a very thick book called "Les Prophéties" (The Prophecies), containing over ten thousand prophecies!
These prophecies were written in a very special kind of poetry, using very old words, sometimes in Latin or Greek, so many people couldn'
