Have you ever wondered what really happens when you open your mouth to speak?
Your brain—that organ weighing only about 1.4 kilograms, smaller than a soccer ball—can accomplish an astonishing series of complex operations in just a few milliseconds: selecting the right words, arranging them in the correct order, adjusting the muscles in your tongue and throat to produce the right sounds, and making sure what you say fits your culture and the situation. These operations are so rapid and so precise that you don't even realize you're doing them. Every child just learning to speak is demonstrating a capability that amazes scientists all over the world.
语言不仅仅是说话。语言是你此刻正在用眼睛阅读这些文字时大脑中进行的神奇翻译。语言是你闭着眼睛想象一只红色苹果时脑海中浮现的那个形象。语言是当你听到"不要碰那个烫的炉子"时,你的身体自动退缩的反应。语言,渗透在人类生活的每一个角落,从我们醒来的那一刻到我们沉沉睡去,它无时无刻不在塑造着我们的世界。
Language is more than speaking. Language is the magical translation your brain is doing right now as your eyes move across these words. Language is the image of a red apple that appears in your mind when you close your eyes and imagine one. Language is the automatic flinch your body makes when you hear "don't touch that hot stove." Language permeates every corner of human life, from the moment we wake until we fall asleep, constantly shaping our world.
In this chapter, we'll embark on a journey to explore language together. We'll answer a seemingly simple but profoundly deep question: What exactly is language? We'll take apart language's various components and see how the four pillars of phonetics, grammar, semantics, and pragmatics support the entire edifice of human language. We'll compare human language with other animals' communication systems, and you'll discover that although bees dance to pass information and chimpanzees can learn hundreds of sign language symbols, human language has some unique and essential characteristics that make it an unprecedented superpower on Earth. Finally, we'll take a first look at a fascinating question: Does language affect how we think? The answer to this question might completely change how you see the world.
准备好了吗?让我们开始这场语言的冒险吧!

语言的本质:一种独特的符号系统
什么是符号?世界是由符号构成的
在我们深入了解语言之前,我们需要先理解一个关键概念:符号。
Before we dive deep into language, we need to understand a key concept: symbols.
什么是符号?符号就是代表其他事物的东西。你有没有注意到,我们身边充满了符号?马路上红色的八边形代表"停",这就是一个符号——红色本身并不会让你的汽车停下,那个形状本身也不会,但当它们组合在一起时,就代表了一种需要你执行的行为。课桌上的校徽是一种符号,它代表着你所在的学校。你的名字是一个符号,它代表着你这个独一无二的人。数字"7"是一个符号,它代表着一个抽象的数量概念。
What's a symbol? A symbol is something that represents something else. Have you noticed that symbols are all around us? The red octagon on the road means "stop"—that's a symbol. The red color itself won't stop your car, nor will that shape alone, but when combined, they represent a behavior you need to perform. The school emblem on your desk is a symbol representing the school you attend. Your name is a symbol representing you, this unique individual. The number "7" is a symbol representing an abstract concept of quantity.
Language is a symbol system, but it's far more complex and powerful than any traffic sign or school emblem you've ever seen. The words in language are symbols: the character "狗" (dog) represents a four-legged animal that wags its tail; "爱" (love) represents a warm, deep emotion; "量子" (quantum) represents an extremely complex but fascinating concept in physics. When you hear the word "dog," an image of a dog automatically appears in your mind, even if there's no dog in front of you. This is the power of symbols—it can evoke the thing it represents in your heart and mind.
符号的三大特征:任意性、创造性和层级性
语言学家——研究语言的科学家——经过长期观察发现,人类语言作为一套符号系统,拥有三个至关重要的特征:任意性、创造性和层级性。这三个特征就像语言的三条支柱,支撑起了整个人类语言的大厦。
Linguists—scientists who study language—have discovered through long observation that human language, as a symbol system, has three crucial characteristics: arbitrariness, creativity, and hierarchy. These three characteristics are like the three pillars supporting the entire edifice of human language.
The first characteristic: arbitrariness. Arbitrariness means there's no necessary physical connection between a language symbol and what it represents. In Chinese, that furry, barking animal is called "狗" (gǒu); in English, "dog"; in French, "chien"; in Japanese, "いぬ" (inu); in Korean, "개" (gae). It's the same animal, so why do different languages use completely different sounds and symbols? Because the relationship between language symbols and what they represent is arbitrary—there's no natural reason why we must use a particular sound or symbol for a particular thing. It's entirely a convention of human society.
这种任意性带来了一个有趣的结果:既然没有什么"天然的"方式可以代表事物,那么不同的人类群体就可以自由地发展出完全不同的语言系统。这正是为什么世界上有超过7000种不同的语言,每一种都有自己独特的词汇、声音和规则。
This arbitrariness leads to an interesting result: since there's no "natural" way to represent things, different groups of humans are free to develop completely different language systems. This is exactly why there are over 7,000 different languages in the world, each with its own unique vocabulary, sounds, and rules.
The second characteristic: creativity. Human language can create infinitely many new sentences. Imagine: you have an extremely thick dictionary in front of you, containing all commonly used words. Let's say this dictionary has 100,000 words. How many ways are there to combine 100,000 words into sentences? Mathematics tells us that just the number of ways to arrange five words into sentences is 100,000 × 100,000 × 100,000 × 100,000 × 100,000—that's a 1 followed by 20 zeros! In reality, sentences can have a few words or hundreds of words, can discuss the past, present, and future, can discuss real, imagined, or completely absurd things. This infinite creativity is something animal communication systems simply cannot match.**
第三个特征:层级性。 语言不是一团混乱的符号,而是一个有着清晰层级的系统。这个层级就像一座建筑的不同楼层,从最小的砖块一直到大大小小的房间,最后到整栋大楼。我们稍后会在本章中详细看到,语言从最小的音素开始,一层一层地搭建起来,最终形成了我们能够表达的最复杂的思想。
The third characteristic: hierarchy. Language isn't a chaotic jumble of symbols but a system with clear levels. This hierarchy is like different floors of a building, from the smallest bricks to rooms of various sizes, and finally to the entire building. We'll see in detail later in this chapter how language starts from the smallest phonemes and builds up level by level, ultimately forming the most complex thoughts we can express.**
为什么语言是一种"双重偶发性"的系统?
语言学家们还发现了语言的一个极其重要的特征:双重偶发性。这个术语听起来很复杂,但其实概念很简单。
Linguists have also discovered an extremely important characteristic of language: double articulation. This term sounds complex, but the concept is actually quite simple.
双重偶发性的第一层含义是:语言符号和它所代表的世界之间没有必然联系。英文中"cat"代表那种会抓老鼠的动物,中文中"猫"也代表那种动物,但是"cat"和猫这种动物之间没有任何物理上的相似性——猫不会发出"cat"的音,你也不能从"cat"这个声音推断出它代表的是一种动物。我们之前讨论的符号任意性就是这个意思。
