Welcome to the Simple World
---
Xiao Ming was very upset today. Can you guess why? He spent fifteen whole minutes looking for his school uniform this morning. It wasn't because the clothes were still wet from washing—it was because he had so many clothes piled up on the bed, chairs, and floor that they looked like a messy mountain!
"Where's my blue T-shirt, Mom?" Xiao Ming called out while rummaging through the pile.
"It's in the bottom pile, go find it yourself," Mom's voice came from the kitchen.
Xiao Ming kept digging and finally found the wrinkled blue T-shirt buried under the third "mountain." By the time he got dressed, grabbed his backpack, and made it to the breakfast table, his food had gone cold.
Such mornings were nothing new for Xiao Ming. His room was like a "treasure cave"—full of stuff everywhere: toys, books, snacks, cards, stickers, bottles, boxes... so many things he couldn't count them all. Every time Mom asked him to tidy up, he'd say "okay," but never actually did it. Just looking at all that stuff gave him a headache.
One day, Xiao Ming's cousin Xiao Hong came to visit. Xiao Hong was two years older and went to school in another city. When she pushed open Xiao Ming's door, her jaw dropped in surprise: "Wow, Xiao Ming! Your room looks like a warehouse! I can barely find a place to stand!"
Xiao Hong frowned and carefully stepped into the room, afraid of stepping on something she shouldn't. After finally making it to the bed and sitting down, she found a plastic dinosaur digging into her leg.
"Xiao Ming, do you know how much stuff you have?" Xiao Hong asked.
"Um, a lot?" Xiao Ming scratched his head.
"Let me count." Xiao Hong took out her phone and opened the calculator. "Toys, let me count... one, two, three... twenty-three! Books? More than twenty too! And snacks, stickers, cards... Oh my, I can't even finish counting!"
Xiao Ming was shocked too. He'd never realized he had so much stuff.
Suddenly, Xiao Hong smiled mysteriously and said, "Xiao Ming, do you want to try a magic trick?"
"Magic? What kind of magic?" Xiao Ming's eyes lit up. "Is it the candy magic? Or the toy magic?"
"Nope," Xiao Hong laughed. "It's a magic trick that can make your room neat and tidy, so you won't be in a rush every morning—it's called 'minimalist living.'"
"Minimalist living?" Xiao Ming had never heard of this phrase. "What does that mean?"
Xiao Hong sat down next to Xiao Ming and started telling her story: "When I was in first grade, I was just like you—my room was full of stuff. Later I discovered that every time I saw so many things, I'd feel restless and irritable. I didn't want to do homework, didn't want to read, and didn't even want to play with friends. Then Mom taught me a method—make things fewer!"
"Make things fewer?" Xiao Ming blinked. "You mean throwing things away?"
"Right and not right at the same time," Xiao Hong explained. "It's not just throwing things away—it's learning to choose. Keep the things that really matter, that are really useful, that really make you happy. Let go of or deal with the rest."
Xiao Ming nodded thoughtfully: "So... what should I keep and what should I throw away?"
"That's where some methods come in handy." Xiao Hong stood up. "Come on, let me show you what real minimalist living is like!"
Xiao Ming's Week: The Troubles of Chaos
Instead of explaining the theory right away, Xiao Hong asked Xiao Ming to recall his past week.
"Xiao Ming, think about it—was there anything that especially bothered you this week?" Xiao Hong asked.
Xiao Ming thought carefully, then opened up:
Monday: "Monday morning, I couldn't find my red water bottle, so I used a plastic cup instead. But during PE class, the plastic cup lid fell off and water spilled everywhere—including all over my homework in my backpack. The teacher made me rewrite everything, and my hand got so tired!"
Wednesday: "Wednesday afternoon, I was looking for a blue marker for my art assignment. I searched through every drawer, box, and bag for almost half an hour—until I finally found it inside the book I was already holding! I wasted so much time and almost didn't finish my homework on time."
Friday: "Friday after school, I wanted to play with my new remote-control car. But I searched forever and couldn't find the batteries. I turned the whole room upside down, and finally discovered I'd stuffed them under the bed last time—mixed with dust and paper scraps. The batteries had rusted!"
Saturday: "And Saturday, I promised to help Mom clean the living room. But when I saw how messy the coffee table was—newspapers, magazines, snack bags, remotes, my toys...—I got a headache and didn't want to do anything. So I didn't do anything at all. Mom was a little disappointed, and I felt bad too."
As Xiao Ming talked, he realized he'd been complaining about so many things. He felt a bit embarrassed and looked down: "It seems... I do have a lot of troubles."
Xiao Hong nodded and said: "See? This is the downside of having too much stuff—you spend too much time looking for things, waste energy, and your mood gets worse."
"But," Xiao Hong turned the conversation around, "all these problems can be solved! As long as we learn 'minimalist living,' everything will change!"
What Is Minimalist Living?
"Xiao Hong Jiejie, what exactly is minimalist living?" Xiao Ming couldn't help asking. "Does it mean throwing everything away? Then wouldn't I become broke?"
Xiao Hong laughed: "Ha ha, of course we're not throwing everything away! Minimalist living means keeping the things that truly matter to you, and making life simple, organized, and happy."
She took out a piece of paper, drew a big circle, and wrote a few lines inside:
---
> - 少一点东西(Less stuff) > - 多一点空间(More space) > - 少一点烦恼(Less stress) > - 多一点快乐(More joy) > - 少一点混乱(Less chaos) > - 多一点时间(More time)
---
"Look," Xiao Hong pointed to the paper and said, "minimalist living isn't about having no
