Imagine standing on the banks of a great river in Italy, watching the first rays of sunlight illuminate the seven hills that would one day become the most powerful city in the ancient world. This is where our story begins—not with emperors and legions, not with marble temples and grand coliseums, but with a river, a wolf, and two baby boys whose fate would shape the entire course of human civilization.
The question we must ask ourselves is this: What makes a city? Is it the buildings, the roads, the walls that protect it? Or is it something deeper—the dreams, the ambitions, the stories that bind its people together? Rome's answer to this question would echo through millennia, influencing everything from law and government to architecture and language. And it all started with a legend so powerful that Romans themselves believed it was true.
In this chapter, we will travel back nearly three thousand years to discover how Rome was born. We will meet the legendary founders—Romulus and Remus, the twin brothers raised by a she-wolf. We will explore the three great ages that transformed a small village on the Tiber River into an empire that would span three continents: Europe, Africa, and Asia. And we will ask ourselves a fascinating question: If you had been born in Ancient Rome, which era would you have wanted to live in?

The Legend of the Wolf-Brothers
Born from the Ashes of Troy
Long before Rome had emperors or legions, long before it built roads that stretched across continents or aqueducts that brought water to millions, there was a story that every Roman child knew by heart. This was the story of their city's founding, and it began not in Italy, but far to the east, in the ancient city of Troy.
The Greeks had destroyed Troy in a great war—a war we now call the Trojan War, made famous by Homer's epic poem, the Iliad. From the ashes of that burning city, a hero named Aeneas escaped. He was not the greatest warrior, nor the cleverest, but he was pious—devoted to the gods and to his family. With his aged father on his back and his young son by his side, Aeneas fled into the night, carrying only the household gods of Troy.
What followed was a journey that would take ten years. Aeneas wandered the Mediterranean, facing storms, shipwrecks, and the wrath of the goddess Juno, who hated the Trojans and sought to destroy Aeneas at every turn. He lost his wife in the flames of Troy, found a new love in Carthage (only to be forced to leave her), and finally, after countless adventures, arrived at the mouth of a great river in a land called Latium.
The locals were frightened of this stranger and his band of refugees. But Aeneas proved himself in battle and married Lavinia, the daughter of the local king. After the old king's death, Aeneas became ruler of Latium. His people were no longer Trojans but Latins, and their new homeland would one day be the heart of the Roman state.
Aeneas had a son named Ascanius, also called Iulus. This son would found the city of Alba Longa, which became the dominant city in the Latin region for generations. And from the royal line of Alba Longa would come two brothers—twins—who would create a city that would outlast all others.
The Birth of Twins
Numitor was the king of Alba Longa, but his younger brother Amulius was a ambitious man. Through cunning and force, Amulius seized the throne from his brother and established himself as king. To prevent Numitor's descendants from threatening his rule, Amulius did something terrible: he forced Numitor's daughter, Rhea Silvia, to become a Vestal Virgin—a priestess who had to remain unmarried and childless for thirty years.
But the gods had other plans. Rhea Silvia was visited by the god of war, Mars, and she gave birth to twin boys—Romulus and Remus. When Amulius discovered this terrible violation of her vows, he flew into a rage. He ordered the babies thrown into the river Tiber, condemning them to death.
The river was in flood that day, and the basket carrying the two babies floated safely past the reeds and shallows, finally coming to rest at the foot of the Palatine Hill. There, under a wild fig tree, the twins were discovered by a she-wolf—Lupa, as the Romans would call her. Rather than devouring the infants, the wolf nursed them with her own milk, keeping them alive.
This was the beginning of Rome's most famous legend. A she-wolf, the symbol of strength and ferocity, became the mother of Rome's founders. In some versions of the story, a啄木鸟(woodpecker)also helped feed the children, as this bird was sacred to Mars. The twins were half-divine—sons of the god of war himself—and even as babies, they possessed supernatural strength and destiny.
Eventually, the twins were found by a shepherd named Faustulus, who brought them to his wife Acca Larentia to raise. Some accounts say this Acca Larentia was herself a prostitute or a woman of ill repute, while later traditions tried to elevate her status. Either way, Romulus and Remus grew up among shepherds, learning to ride horses, track game, and fight with the rough courage of men who lived close to the land.
As the boys grew, they became leaders among the shepherds. Their noble blood showed through their natural authority and courage. Eventually, they learned the truth of their parentage—Numitor was their grandfather, and Amulius was the usurper who had stolen his throne. The twins gathered a band of loyal followers and set out to restore their grandfather to his rightful place as king of Alba Longa.
Amulius was killed—accounts differ on whether Romulus or Remus struck the fatal blow—and Numitor was restored to the throne. But the twins, realizing they could never be safe while Amulius's supporters remained powerful in Alba Longa, made a bold decision. They would not stay in the city of their ancestors. Instead, they would found a new city of their own, in the place where they had been saved from death.
