1. 从“把关人”到“算法 Gatekeeper”:传媒真相的百年变迁 / From Gatekeepers to Algorithmic Gatekeepers: A Century-long Evolution of Media Truth
To Hell with Spain!”(缅因号惨案! (You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war)正是这一时期黄色新闻(Yellow Journalism)操控舆论的典型注脚。
On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine, a U.S. Navy battleship, exploded and sank in Havana Harbor, killing 266 American soldiers. William Randolph Hearst, the media mogul locked in a circulation war with his rival Joseph Pulitzer's *New York World*, ran front-page headlines for 27 consecutive days in his *New York Journal* claiming that Spanish conspirators had blown up the Maine, without any supporting evidence. The sensational headlines read: "Remember the Maine! To Hell with Spain!" To fabricate evidence, Hearst even ordered his reporters to forge a private letter from the Spanish ambassador to the U.S., Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, in which the ambassador was said to have insulted the American public; the full text of the forged letter was published in the *Journal*, and it was not until years after the war that the U.S. Navy officially concluded that the Maine explosion was caused by an internal boiler malfunction. Hearst's famous quip "You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war" became a defining epitaph for the era of Yellow Journalism that defined his media empire. This incident was not an isolated case of opinion manipulation, but the first systematic demonstration of the "gatekeeper" power held by media institutions under the commercial logic of late 19th-century American journalism: media outlets in the traditional media era, by monopolizing news production and distribution channels, gained absolute power to define "what is the truth", and this power was deeply bound to capital expansion and political interests from the very beginning.
This incident is regarded by communication scholars as the beginning of the abuse of traditional media's "gatekeeper" power, and also lays a historical foreshadowing for the rise of algorithmic gatekeepers a century later: no matter whether the subject of gatekeeping is an editor or code, as long as they master the absolute power of information distribution, they will inevitably embed their behind-the-scenes interest demands into the definition of "truth". To understand the cognitive dilemma of the contemporary information environment, we first need to sort out the evolution of the media's role as the gatekeeper of truth, as well as the underlying logic of the relationship between media and truth in different eras.
In 1947, social psychologist Kurt Lewin first proposed the "Gatekeeping Theory" in his article *Channels of Group Life*, pointing out that information passes through multiple "gates" during the dissemination process, and only after being screened and filtered by subjects with specific power does it reach the audience. In 1950, communication scholar David White applied this theory to the field of news production, confirming through interviews with editors of a local U.S. newspaper that editors in newsrooms are the de facto "gatekeepers" of facts: they decide which news can be published and which needs to be filtered based on their own positions, audience preferences, advertiser interests, and other criteria. White's research revealed for the first time the operating mechanism
This conclusion of White's research was verified by a large number of subsequent empirical studies in the 1950s: In a 1952 survey of 12 local U.S. newspaper newsrooms, communication scholar Park found that 82% of editors admitted to actively filtering content that conflicted with advertisers' interests, with 67% of editors stating that "if a report would affect the cooperative relationship with major advertisers, they would choose not to publish it first". The reporting process of the Watergate scandal in 1972 also confirmed the dual nature of gatekeeper power: The editorial team of *The Washington Post* withstood pressure from the Nixon administration and threats from advertisers to withdraw their advertisements, and insisted on publishing the investigative reports by Woodward and Bernstein, which ultimately promoted the resignation of the only president in U.S. history to resign from office, becoming a classic case of traditional media "gatekeepers" fulfilling their public supervision function. These two cases, one positive and one negative, jointly reveal that the "gatekeeper" power of traditional media is inherently neutral, and its value orientation completely depends on the underlying binding logic: when capital and public power become the interest sources of gatekeepers, gatekeeping becomes a tool for "manipulating the truth"; when journalism professionalism and public interest become the core guidelines of gatekeepers, gatekeeping becomes a barrier to "guarding the truth".
The monopoly of gatekeepers in the traditional media era was essentially the result of the combined effect of technical limitations and capital logic: From the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, news production required heavy asset investment such as printing houses, distribution networks, and reporting teams. Only media moguls and media groups with strong capital strength had the ability to build a national news production and distribution system. At its peak, Hearst owned 28 newspapers, 18 magazines, and 2 news agencies, with a daily circulation of more than 8 million copies, covering more than 60% of urban readers in the United States. At the end of the 20th century, Murdoch's News Corporation controlled 40% of the newspaper circulation in the UK and 70% of the print media market in Australia. This capital-level monopoly gave a handful of media giants the natural power to "define the truth". This power was deeply bound to political interests from the very beginning: Hearst used his newspapers many times to create public opinion for the candidates he supported. In 1910, through continuous negative reports in the *New York Journal*, he directly caused the support rate of then-U.S. President Taft in the Republican Party to plummet, which eventually led to Wilson's successful election. Before the Iraq War in 2003, *The Times* under Murdoch deliberately amplified false intelligence that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, providing public opinion support for the British government's partic
