What is Science? What is the Scientific Method?
The word "Science" comes from the Latin "scientia," meaning "knowledge" or "to know." But science is not just about accumulating facts and data—it is more a way of thinking about the world, a systematic method of asking questions and finding answers.
Imagine if you were an early human seeing fire for the first time. What would you think? "This thing is hot," "It can produce light," "It can burn things"—these are all observations. But if you want to know "what makes fire burn more intensely?", that begins the first step of science.
After hundreds of years of practice, scientists have summarized a universal exploration method called the Scientific Method. The core of this method is: Ask a question → Make a guess → Test the guess → Analyze results → Draw conclusions. Sounds simple, right? Let's dive into it step by step.
Observation: Open Your Eyes, Sharpen Your Ears
Observation is the starting point of the scientific method. In the home lab, observation means you need to pay attention to all the interesting phenomena happening around you: water boiling, ice melting, iron nails rusting, shadows changing throughout the day... these are all observations.
Scientific observation is different from ordinary seeing. Ordinary seeing is just "seeing," while scientific observation is "noticing details worth noticing." For example, when seeing a glass of water on a table:
There is a glass of water on the table."
There is about 250 milliliters of transparent liquid in a glass on the table, with tiny water droplets on the glass walls, room temperature is 22 degrees Celsius, the water surface is calm without any movement."
Scientific observation requires us to use multiple senses—sight, hearing, touch, smell, and even taste (but remember, in home experiments, never taste unknown chemical substances). At the same time, we need tools to extend our senses: rulers to measure length, thermometers to measure temperature, scales to measure mass.
A simple method to develop observation skills: spend five minutes every day describing any object or phenomenon around you. You can start with "This is a blue ballpoint pen" and gradually progress to "This ballpoint pen's blue is a deep blue, the ink capacity is about enough for 500 more characters, there are slight wear marks on the pen body, and the plastic at the grip area is somewhat smooth—indicating this pen has been used for a long time." Persist with this practice, and you will find your observation skills improving rapidly!
Questioning: Curiosity is the Seed of Science
With observation comes the next step: Questioning. Good questions are the starting point of scientific exploration, transforming vague observations into clear research directions.
Good questions have the following characteristics:
2. Specific and clear: Not "why do things get hot?" but "why do metals conduct heat faster than plastics?"
4. Verifiable: Not "how big is the universe?" but "under the same conditions, which freezes faster, salt water or pure water?"
6. Has room for exploration: Not "what is 1+1?" but "why do some substances release heat when mixed while others absorb heat?"
8. Provokes thinking: Good science questions often have more than one answer, guiding you to deeply consider various possibilities.
Let's look at a few examples:
Ordinary question: "Do plants need water?"
Scientific question: "If we water two identical plants with different amounts of water, what will be the difference in their growth? How many milliliters of water per day makes plants grow healthiest?"
The latter is an experimentable question—you can design experiments to test it.
Hypothesis: Nature's Possible Answers
A Hypothesis is your preliminary answer to a question—a reasonable guess based on existing knowledge and observations. It is not imagination but the logical expression of "if... then..."
Characteristics of a hypothesis:
- **Testable**: You can design experiments to verify whether it is right or wrong
- **Specific**: Predicts clear results, not vague guesses
- **Evidence-based**: Based on your existing knowledge and observations
For example, for the question "How many milliliters of water per day makes plants grow healthiest?", you might propose:
"Hypothesis: If we water the plant with 50 milliliters of water per day, the plant will grow taller and healthier than plants watered with 20 milliliters or 100 milliliters per day."
Or more completely:
"If plants need an appropriate amount of water daily (not too much, not too little), then plants under optimal water conditions will show the highest maximum growth rate (measured by plant height and number of leaves), because water participates in photosynthesis and maintains cell turgor pressure.
Note that the hypothesis does not have to be "correct"—the purpose of science is not to prove hypotheses correct, but to test whether they are correct. Sometimes, experimental results will disprove your hypothesis, and that is perfectly normal and equally valuable! Many great scientific discoveries have come from hypotheses being disproved.
