第一章 摄影不是复刻:视觉语法的诞生 / Chapter 1: Photography Is Not Replication: The Birth of Visual Grammar
Three days after the end of the 2023 plum rain season, puddles lingered at the entrance of Yongkang Road in Shanghai, wild mint growing from cracks in the bluestone slabs dotted with raindrops. Lin Xiao, carrying a faded Leica M11, had been crouching on the concrete step next to the third garbage bin at the alley entrance for 40 minutes without moving. Three meters in front of him, the calico cat that came begging for food at the same time every day was flicking its tail, holding half a discarded Taiwanese sausage in its mouth, its hind legs already propped on the wall edge, just seconds away from jumping down.
就在林萧左前方五米的地方,刚拿到索尼A7M4的摄影爱好者小周也在拍这只猫。他已经按了二十几次快门,大光圈全开,背景虚化成奶油般化开,猫的胡须、瞳孔里的反光都清晰得纤毫毕现,他在取景器里看到的,是一只完美的、可爱的猫,除此之外什么都没有。
Five meters to Lin Xiao's left front, photography enthusiast Xiao Zhou, who had just gotten a Sony A7M4, was also photographing the cat. He had pressed the shutter nearly 20 times, aperture wide open, the background blurred into a creamy bokeh, the cat's whiskers and the reflection in its pupils captured in perfect, razor-sharp detail. All he saw through the viewfinder was a perfect, cute cat, nothing else.
就在三花猫纵身跳向地面的瞬间,林萧按下了快门。小周凑过来看他的屏幕,皱起眉:“你拍的是什么啊?猫在画面右下角,这么小,背景还这么清楚,我都能看到墙上的小广告,你这构图有问题啊,主体都不突出。”
The moment the calico cat jumped toward the ground, Lin Xiao pressed the shutter. Xiao Zhou came over to look at his screen and frowned: "What did you even take? The cat is so small in the bottom right corner, the background is so clear I can even see the ads on the wall, your composition is off, the subject isn't prominent at all."
林萧把屏幕亮度调高,指着猫的眼睛说:“你拍的是猫的样子,我拍的是这只猫在等什么。它每天这个点都在这等那个穿蓝校服的学生,那个学生每天放学都会绕过来给它喂火腿肠,上周它还为了追那个学生的自行车,被电动车蹭了一下耳朵,现在左耳还有个疤。我要拍的,不是猫有多可爱,是这只猫和这个巷子,和那个学生的故事。”
Lin Xiao turned up the screen brightness and pointed at the cat's eyes: "You took a photo of what the cat looks like. I took a photo of what this cat is waiting for. It waits here at this time every day for that student in the blue uniform, who always detours to feed it ham sausage after school. Last week it got hit by an electric scooter chasing the student's bike, it still has a scar on its left ear. I'm not trying to photograph how cute the cat is, I'm trying to photograph the story of this cat, this alley, and that student."
这张最终成片的参数非常简单:光圈f/8,快门1/125秒,ISO400,没有后期拉 saturation,没有二次裁剪,甚至没有把猫放在经典的“三分法交点”上。但几乎所有看过这张片子的人,第一反应都是“这只猫好像有故事”,而不是“这只猫好可爱”。
The final photo had extremely simple settings: f/8 aperture, 1/125 second shutter speed, ISO400, no saturation boost in post-processing, no secondary cropping, and the cat wasn't even placed at the classic "rule of thirds intersection". But almost everyone who saw the photo's first reaction was "this cat seems to have a story", not "this cat is so cute".
This is the essential difference between "replication" and "expression": Xiao Zhou's shooting was a mechanical replication of the reality in front of him. He captured the cat clearly, cutely, in line with the public's perception of a "good photo", with correct settings and up-to-standard technique. But this is work that the camera's factory settings can already complete—even current AI drawing tools can generate a more perfect image than his by inputting "cute calico cat, large aperture blurred background". Lin Xiao's shooting, on the other hand, used a set of underlying rule systems to translate the story he perceived into visual language that the audience could understand. This set of rule systems is what we call Visual Grammar, the core subject of this book.

1.1 为什么“参数正确”只是摄影的入场券
1.1 Why "Correct Settings" Is Only the Ticket to Photography
如果你翻过任何一本摄影入门教材,前几章一定绕不开“曝光三要素”“对焦模式”“白平衡设置”这些技术内容。这是摄影学习的必经阶段:你得先知道怎么把照片拍清晰,怎么拍得不过曝、不欠曝,怎么把主体拍得清楚,这是摄影的“识字阶段”——就像学写字先学拼音,学英语先学字母,你总得先知道怎么操作相机,才能谈创作。
If you flip through any introductory photography textbook, the first few chapters will definitely cover technical content such as the "exposure triangle", "focus mode", and "white balance settings". This is a necessary stage of photography learning: you have to first know how to take a clear photo, how to avoid overexposure and underexposure, and how to capture the subject clearly. This is the "literacy stage" of photography—just like learning to write starts with pinyin, and learning English starts with letters, you have to first know how to operate the camera before you can talk about creation.
But many photographers get stuck in the "intermediate bottleneck": after ten or twenty years of shooting, their skills become more and more proficient, their settings more and more precise, their post-processing more and more refined, but their work still lacks "soul": portrait photography comes out as uniform retouched and whitened faces, landscape photography comes out as oversaturated "sweet water photos", and documentary photography comes out as "tourist打卡photos", with no personal expression. 2022 data from the Global Photography Education Association (GPEA) shows that 72% of photography enthusiasts spend 80% of their learning time in the first 3 years of learning photography on equipment settings and post-processing technology, and only 12% actively learn visual expression and narrative logic; and these 12% are 7.3 times more likely to become professional creators in the fifth year of their photography career than the other 88%.
这个差距的核心,就是“参数思维”和“视觉语法思维”的差异:参数思维关注的是“怎么把眼前的物体拍清楚、拍准确”,是“复刻现实”的逻辑;而视觉语法思维关注的是“怎么用画面元素讲我想讲的故事”,是“翻译现实”的逻辑。
The core of this gap is the difference between "parameter thinking" and "visual grammar thinking": parameter thinking focuses on "how to shoot the object in front of you clearly and accurately", which is the logic of "replicating reality"; while visual grammar thinking focuses on "how to use visual elements to tell the story I want to tell", which is the logic of "translating reality".
你永远拍不出比现实更“真实”的照片——再精准的参数、再清晰的传感器,也只能记录下现实的一个切片,甚至这个切片还会因为你的白平衡、你的取景框、你的后期,带上你的主观色彩。摄影的本质从来不是复刻现实,而是用视觉语法筛选、重组、翻译现实,让观众接收到你想传递的信息。
You will never take a photo that is more "real" than reality—no matter how precise the settings, no matter how clear the sensor, it can only record a slice of reality, and even this slice will carry your subjective color due to your white balance, your viewfinder, and your post-processing. The essence of photography has never been replicating reality, but using visual grammar to filter, reorganize, and translate reality, so that the audience can receive the information you want to convey.

1.2 什么是视觉语法:摄影的“底层操作系统”
1.2 What Is Visual Grammar: The "Underlying Operating System" of Photography
如果把摄影比作写文章,参数和技术就是“写字的能力”——你至少得知道每个字怎么写,才能写出一篇文章。但写出来的东西是流水账还是小说,是散文还是诗歌,取决于你对“语法”和“修辞”的掌握:你怎么排列句子,怎么用比喻,怎么控制节奏,怎么传递情绪。
If photography is compared to writing, parameters and technology are the "ability to write characters"—you have to at least know how to write each character to write an article. But whether what you write is a chronicle or a novel, prose or poetry, depends on your mastery of "grammar" and "rhetoric": how you arrange sentences, how to use metaphors, how to control the rhythm, how to convey emotions.
