> In ancient times, the stars in the sky were not just twinkling points of light; each had its own name and story. The most noble star emperor was called the Purple Forbidden Emperor (Ziwei Dadi), who resided in the center of the sky—the Purple Forbidden Enclosure—like a majestic king, guarding the order of the entire universe. Under the Purple Forbidden Emperor, there were four important assistants, namely the Seven Stars of the Big Dipper: Tian Shu, Tian Xuan, Tian Ji, Tian Quan, Yu Heng, Kai Yang, and Yao Guang. They were like seven brave knights, driving a huge Big Dipper chariot every day, patrolling the sky, guiding people on earth, recording time, and even influencing everyone's destiny.
> According to legend, the Purple Forbidden Emperor created the ancient art of Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) to decipher the secrets hidden in the starry sky. He believed that at the moment of each person's birth, the positions of the stars in the sky were like a unique birthday gift, recording that person's character, potential, and life journey. By observing the arrangement of these stars, people could better understand themselves, as if having a map from the universe to help find direction in life.
> In ancient Chinese astronomy, the sky was divided into regions called “lunar mansions” or “constellations,” just like countries on land. The largest divisions were the “Three Enclosures and Four Symbols,” where the “Purple Forbidden Enclosure” (Ziwei Yuan) was the imperial palace in the sky, home to the Purple Forbidden Emperor and his officials. Surrounding it were the “Supreme Palace Enclosure” (Taiwei Yuan) and the “Heavenly Market Enclosure” (Tianshi Yuan), resembling the court and the marketplace. The “Four Symbols” were the Azure Dragon of the East, the White Tiger of the West, the Vermilion Bird of the South, and the Black Tortoise of the North, like four guardian spirits surrounding the central Purple Forbidden Enclosure.
> The Big Dipper (Bei Dou) is one of the most important star groups in the Purple Forbidden Enclosure, composed of seven bright stars forming a ladle shape, hence also called the “Ladle Stars.” In ancient times, without clocks, people used the direction of the Big Dipper to determine seasons and time. For example, in spring the handle points east, in autumn west. When traveling at night, finding the Big Dipper leads to the North Star, allowing one to navigate without getting lost.
> The history of Zi Wei Dou Shu can be traced back thousands of years in China. The earliest star records appeared in the Neolithic era, with people painting star patterns on pottery. By the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, there were professional “star observers” who recorded celestial changes, believing that the movement of stars was related to wars, harvests, and disasters on earth.
> During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, astronomy made great progress. The famous astronomers Gan De and Shi Shen wrote “Astral Divination” and “Astronomy” respectively, documenting the movements of the five planets—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn—and the coordinates of fixed stars. These works were later combined into “Gan-Shi Star Classic,” one of the world’s earliest astronomical texts. From these observations, people began to notice how different stars influenced human affairs.
> By the Han Dynasty, the rudiments of Zi Wei Dou Shu took shape. Scholars divided the sky into “Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions,” each with mythological stories and auspicious or inauspicious meanings. Meanwhile, the Five Elements theory (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth) was introduced to explain relationships among stars. After the Han Dynasty, with the development of Buddhism and Taoism, astrology blended with philosophy and religion, and the Zi Wei Dou Shu system continued to improve.
> The Tang Dynasty was when Zi Wei Dou Shu was formally established. The famous astronomer Li Chunfeng systematically organized astrological theories in “Yi Si Zhan” and invented the method of casting a “life chart” (ming pan). The life chart is like a map of the sky at birth, drawn on a circular disk divided into twelve sections called “Twelve Palaces.” Each palace represents a different aspect of life: the Life Palace represents oneself, the Wealth Palace represents money, the Marriage Palace represents spouse, etc.
> After the Song Dynasty, Zi Wei Dou Shu spread widely among the people, with many famous astrologers and books emerging, such as “The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu” and “The Collection of Zi Wei Dou Shu.” These texts detailed the meanings of various stars, how to interpret palace combinations, and how to cast a chart based on birth time. Since then, Zi Wei Dou Shu has become an essential part of traditional Chinese destiny studies, passed down to the present.
> Many children may have heard of Western astrology, like the twelve zodiac signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc. So, what is the difference between Zi Wei Dou Shu and Western astrology? Although both study the relationship between stars and people, their approaches and methods are very different. We can use a metaphor: Western astrology is like looking at a “sun photo,” focusing only on the Sun’s position in a zodiac sign; while Zi Wei Dou Shu is like watching a “starry sky movie,” observing the movements and interactions of all important stars simultaneously.
