Chapter 1: When Adolescence Meets Mid-Life Crisis
The September sunlight filtered through the white curtains, casting dappled shadows on the oak dining table. Fifteen-year-old Xiaoyu sat at the table, her breakfast barely touched—the milk had gone cold, the sandwich bitten twice and abandoned. Her eyes remained fixed on her phone screen, fingers flying across the glass as she tried to finish replying to a message before her mother walked in.
Just then, the kitchen door swung open.
"Xiaoyu! Put down your phone!" Her mother's voice came out like something from an icebox—sharp and cold. "How many times have I told you? No phones during meals!"
Xiaoyu's fingers paused mid-swipe. She looked up. The mother before her made her pause—the woman who used to gently braid her hair, when did she become like this? Her mother's eyes had fine lines at the corners, her hair was loosely pulled back in a ponytail, her under-eye circles were pronounced, and there were egg stains on her apron.
"I was almost done," Xiaoyu said quietly, a hint of pleading in her tone. "Just one more minute."
"One minute?" Her mother walked over and snatched the phone from her hand. "Do you know how much time you spend on that thing every day? Three hours! Three hours! You think I don't know you sneak your phone under the covers at night?"
Xiaoyu's face flushed crimson. "Mom! How could you go through my stuff!"
"Go through your stuff?" Her mother sneered. "I'm your mother, not your enemy. Wait until you grow up and become a mother yourself, then you'll understand all this loving care—"
"I don't need you to understand!" Xiaoyu suddenly raised her voice, her eyes brimming red. "All I need is for you to respect my privacy!"
"Respect?" Her mother's voice rose to match. "I work my fingers to the bone to feed you and clothe you, and you talk to me about respect?"
Silence descended upon the dining table like a heavy curtain. The clock on the wall ticked steadily, each second marking the air with unusual clarity. Xiaoyu bit her lip hard, tears pooling in her eyes, fighting desperately to hold them back.
She wanted to say something, to explain, to make her mother understand how lost, how scared, how desperate for understanding she felt at this age. But the words that left her mouth took on a different shape entirely—
"You don't know me at all!"
With that, she stood up, grabbed her schoolbag, and stormed out of the door without looking back.
Behind her, her mother's voice chased after her: "Xiaoyu! Your sandwich—"
A "bang" echoed as the door shut, sealing away all possibilities of this morning.

The Stranger in the Mirror
The city in early September still held onto summer's lingering warmth, the air carrying the faint fragrance of osmanthus flowers. Xiaoyu pedaled her bicycle through the morning crowd of students, her textbooks in her bag muffled by the jolts of the road. The wind rushed into her school uniform, fluttering her collar, but couldn't disperse the tangled mess of emotions knotting her heart.
Fifteen. What does fifteen even mean?
Three months ago, she was still that little girl who would cling to her mother's hand and act cute, who would cry over a math problem she couldn't solve, who would pour her heart into a diary with a lock and hide it under her pillow. Back then, her world was as simple as a blank sheet of paper. Dad was Superman, Mom was the gentlest mother in the world.
But now—
Xiaoyu slowed down and stopped by the roadside. She pulled out a small mirror from her pocket—a habit she'd developed this summer. The reflection showed a stranger's face. A few red, swollen pimples had sprouted on her forehead, the pores along her nose seemed coarser than before, and there was a brewing "volcano" on her chin.
"Oh my god, how did I end up like this?" Xiaoyu whispered to the stranger in the mirror.
This wasn't the fifteen she'd imagined. She'd thought fifteen would be like Gu Li in "Tiny Times"—refined and elegant, the pretty protagonists from the movies. Not this version—oily skin, pimples everywhere, even she was starting to hate looking at her own face.
But the scariest part wasn't the change in appearance. It was the inexplicable restlessness, like something was burning in her chest with no way out. Lately, she'd been snapping at things for no reason, the smallest issues setting her off. Last night, her little brother had touched her desk lamp, and she'd yelled at him for a full five minutes. When she thought about it afterward, even she couldn't believe it.
Xiaoyu put away the mirror and remounted her bike. She didn't want to go to school, didn't want to face those scores and rankings, didn't want to see the expression on Class Teacher Li's face that always seemed to say "not trying hard enough."
But she had no other choice.
This was the daily reality of being fifteen—living in others' expectations while losing sight of your own direction.

High School: Gateway to a New World
The gate of City No.1 High School stood particularly imposing in the morning light. The massive school emblem hung above the entrance, beneath it the gilded school motto: "Self-improvement and moral integrity." Every morning, thousands of students walked through this gate, carrying their individual dreams and pressures.
Xiaoyu parked her bicycle in the shed, took a deep breath, and walked toward the teaching building.
The first-year classrooms were on the third floor. The hallway was packed with people—freshmen looking around curiously, upperclassmen hurrying to their classes with purpose. Xiaoyu lowered her head and moved through the crowd, her gaze flickering across unfamiliar faces, a strange nervousness knotting her stomach.
"Xiaoyu!"
A familiar voice called from behind. Xiaoyu turned to see her good friend Lin Xiaoxiao running to catch up, her neat short hair flying as she ran.
"Why did you come so early today?" Xiaoxiao panted as she arrived beside her. "Didn't we agree to walk together?"
"I... overslept." Xiaoyu lied. In truth, she'd woken up very early, but she couldn't bear to stay home for another second.
