Chapter 1: An Unexpected Call — The Origins of Collaboration

At 2:17 a.m., the mountain wind, carrying cold damp fog, brushed past the windows of the dispatch room.
Lin Su stared at drone D-07 on his screen — it was climbing toward a target valley at twelve meters per second, its onboard infrared camera sweeping back and forth across dark ridgelines. This was his forty-seventh day at Xuan Falcon Aero, his first overnight shift alone. He did not expect that within the next thirty minutes, this ¥320,000 quadcopter would shatter nearly everything he had assumed about what an "agent" can do.
The call came from the district emergency office: a mountaineer had been out of contact for over nine hours on Lumen Peak at 3,100 meters altitude. The temperature had dropped to minus eight degrees Celsius, and windward frost could hit the ridge without warning.
"D-07, single-unit operation, Mode 2, payload release on standby." Lin Su issued the standard command into his headset.
This was all he could do tonight.

1.1 When a Single Agent Hits the Wall of Physics and Cognition
D-07's flight path had been pre-planned: take off from the nearest temporary landing pad, cross two ridges, arrive at the suspected lost-contact zone on the east side of Lumen Peak, scan the area at low altitude along a preset grid, and search for heat signatures. The whole flow was clean, standardized, textbook-grade.
But no textbook tells you what "grid scan" really means in the mountains at 2 a.m.
Wind. When D-07 crossed the first ridge, it hit an unexpected downdraft. The airframe's attitude angle jumped from zero to eleven degrees in an instant, forcing the autopilot module to burn extra power to stabilize — which meant battery endurance plummeted from the planned twenty-eight minutes to twenty-one.
Fog. The fog in the valley wasn't evenly distributed; it had been carved by terrain into clumps — and D-07's infrared lens was essentially blind in any fog patch where visibility dropped below forty meters. It had to either hover and wait, or detour. Every detour cost battery.
Occlusion. The east face of Lumen Peak was an almost vertical rock wall — full of cracks, hollows, ledges. But when a single drone scanned from above, there was a massive geometric blind spot: anything within two meters below the vertical surface was completely invisible to it.
At 9:41 p.m. (later the timestamp updated to elapsed mission time), D-07 reported: Battery at 18%, no valid heat signature detected, recommend return.
Lin Su had to bring it back. It hadn't failed. It just "couldn't reach."
This is the first, and most fundamental, limitation a single agent encounters when facing the real world — it is a physical entity, and it must obey the laws of physics.
When we talk about "agents" today — whether drones, autonomous vehicles, robot vacuums, or the more advanced humanoid robots of the future — all of them are simultaneously constrained by three classes of limits:
First, energy constraint. A battery, a tank of fuel — that determines how far and how long it can go. Mountain rescue missions usually require covering tens of square kilometers, while a single drone's effective operational radius is often just a few square kilometers.
Second, perceptual constraint. Every sensor has limits on field of view (FOV), resolution, and penetration capability. Infrared can't see through thick fog; LiDAR generates noise on highly reflective surfaces; millimeter-wave radar is weak at detecting stationary objects. No single sensor is "omniscient."
Third, computational & decision constraint. An onboard computer must, within milliseconds, complete localization, mapping, object recognition, path planning, attitude control… Computational power is finite. As task complexity rises, single-agent decision latency and error rates climb sharply.
More subtle is a fourth constraint: blind spot — and this doesn't come from sensor hardware, but from geometry and perspective itself. A drone, a robot, a self-driving car, standing (or hovering) at any given position, can only see "a part" of the world from that position. No matter how clever its algorithm, it cannot see what's one meter directly beneath it — unless it moves.
A single agent is a finite-resource, finite-vantage, finite-decision-capacity entity. It cannot be everywhere, cannot see everything, and cannot decide everything at once.
> Quick takeaway: A single agent is an entity of finite resources, finite vantage, and finite decision capacity. It cannot be everywhere, cannot see everything, and cannot decide everything at once. This isn't an engineering problem — it's an ontological "finitude."
After D-07 returned, Lin Su leaned back in his dispatch chair and stared at the mission zone map on the screen.
That lost-contact zone looked like an open palm, with vast shadowed zones between the fingers — any single drone flying over could only touch the edges of those "finger gaps."
He muttered to himself: "What if… there was more than one?"

1.2 The Question Biology Answered in 400 Million Years: Why a Group?
Humans were not the first species to face this problem.
The earliest multicellular organisms on Earth appeared roughly 600 million years ago; the earliest insect colonies — ants and termites — emerged 140 million years ago; the ancestors of bees were already living in groups during the earlier Cretaceous. Among vertebrates, the cooperative behavior of wolf packs, lion prides, whale pods, bird flocks, and schooling fish spans tens of millions of years of evolutionary history.
In other words, collaboration is something nature has been experimenting with, failing at, and refining for hundreds of millions of years — until it became an extraordinarily precise and reliable mechanism. It is not a human invention; it is a general solution that life discovered when faced with large-scale tasks.
Let's look at some of the m
