In the autumn of 2019, on an evening in a Shanghai residential community, five-year-old elder sister Xiaoyu held her little brother Xiaoyang's hand tightly at the playground, her eyes sparkling with excitement. The younger brother had just turned three, still wobbling when he walked, but his sister always waited for him patiently, never rushing. That day, they built a sandcastle together in the sandbox—Xiaoyu was in charge of design while Xiaoyang was responsible for transporting sand, though most of it ended up on himself. As the setting sun painted the sky in golden hues, the children's laughter echoed through the light. Their mother watched from nearby, her eyes slightly misty.
This scene is an ordinary moment replaying daily in countless two-child families. It may seem simple, yet it contains one of the warmest, most complex, and most worthy of deep exploration relationships in human emotional world—the sibling relationship.
Such scenes are familiar to every parent of a two-child family. When we decide to welcome a second child into this world, our hearts are filled with both anticipation and hidden concerns. We hope our two children will love each other and support one another, but we also inevitably worry: Will there be competition between them? Will they fight for their parents' love? Will age gaps and personality differences create distance between them?
These worries are not without basis. According to data from China's Population and Development Research Center, after the universal two-child policy was implemented in 2016, the proportion of second-child and above births in China increased from about 35% before the policy to over 50% in recent years. This means that in today's Chinese society, two-child families have become a common phenomenon, and how to manage the relationship between two children has become a practical issue that countless parents must face.
However, despite the prevalence of two-child families, we find that systematic guidance books specifically addressing parenting issues in two-child families are still relatively scarce in China. Many first-time parents expecting their second child can often only rely on elders' experience, scattered information online, or simply learn through trial and error. This information asymmetry not only increases parents' parenting anxiety but also, to some extent, affects the healthy development of the sibling relationship.
This is precisely the original intention behind writing this book. As a professional who has worked in family education research for many years, I have contacted hundreds of two-child families, listening to their joys and confusions, achievements and struggles. I deeply feel that behind every two-child family lies a unique story and wisdom, and these stories and wisdom urgently need to be recorded, shared, and systematically organized.
In this book, I will use the metaphor of "two little boats" as the core imagery to lead readers to deeply understand various aspects of parenting in two-child families. The "two little boats" symbolize both the two children and the precious relationship that parents need to carefully guard. The harbor represents home, while the voyage symbolizes the process of the two children's shared growth. Our goal is to help every parent learn how to build a warm and stable harbor where two little boats can sail steadily together, eventually sailing toward their own wonderful life journeys.
Why Sibling Relationships Matter So Much
To understand why sibling relationships hold such an important position in family education, we first need to understand the unique value of this relationship from the perspective of developmental psychology.
Developmental psychology research shows that during a person's growth, siblings are the family members with whom one spends the most time together. Unlike parents, children's interactions with siblings tend to be more frequent, more equal, and more authentic. This relationship continues from childhood into adulthood, spanning the longest period of our lives. Research indicates that the average person spends fifty to sixty years with their siblings throughout their lifetime—far exceeding the time spent with parents or spouses.
In terms of cognitive development, sibling relationships provide children with a unique "social laboratory." American psychologist Judith Rich Harris's "group socialization theory" suggests that behavioral patterns children acquire outside the home are often formed through interactions with siblings and peers. In this "laboratory," children learn how to cooperate, share, handle conflicts, and understand others' emotions and perspectives. These early social experiences will profoundly influence children's future interpersonal patterns.
In emotional development, sibling relationships are equally an important pillar of children's emotional world. When children encounter setbacks outside the home, siblings are often the first people they confide in and seek comfort from. This peer support cannot be completely replaced by parents. Research shows that children with good sibling relationships demonstrate stronger psychological resilience when facing stress and setbacks. They have higher self-esteem, less loneliness, and stronger social adaptability.
Harvard psychologist George Vaillant's "Grant Study" is one of the longest-running studies in psychology history, tracking over 724 men through more than 75 years of their lives. In this study, Vaillant discovered that the quality of one's relationship with siblings during middle age is one of the strongest predictors of late-life happiness and mental health, even more predictive than relationships with parents. This finding undoubtedly gives us a deeper understanding of the importance of sibling relationships.
The Unique Challenges of Two-Child Families
However, the importance of sibling relationships does not mean raising two children is easy. In fact, two-child families face many unique and complex challenges that are often unimaginable for single-child families.
