Introduction to Multimodal Artificial Intelligence
The human perception of the world is inherently multimodal. We observe objects' forms and colors through vision, perceive sound frequencies and rhythms through hearing, experience material temperatures and textures through touch, distinguish molecular characteristics through olfaction, and sense chemical compositions through taste. This multi-channel information acquisition and fusion constitutes the fundamental cognitive framework through which humans understand and comprehend the world. However, traditional computer systems have typically focused on single-modality information processing—computer vision systems process images and videos, natural language processing systems analyze text and speech, and speech recognition systems handle audio signals. This isolated approach to modality processing contrasts sharply with the natural multimodal cognitive mechanisms of humans, representing a critical bottleneck in advancing artificial intelligence toward higher-level cognitive capabilities.
Multimodal Artificial Intelligence has emerged and rapidly developed in this cognitive context. It is dedicated to building intelligent systems capable of perceiving, understanding, and generating information across multiple modalities simultaneously, enabling machines to acquire information, integrate knowledge, and execute tasks through multiple sensory channels, much like humans do. The development of this field not only marks a critical turning point for artificial intelligence technology moving from laboratories to the real world, but also profoundly redefines the fundamental paradigms of human-computer interaction, information processing, and knowledge representation.

1.1.1 Academic Definition of Modality and Multimodality
In academic discourse, the term "modality" derives from the Latin "modus," meaning manner or form. In the fields of cognitive science and artificial intelligence, modality is defined as a specific channel or form for information expression and perception. Each modality carries unique semantic information, possessing distinct statistical properties, representation structures, and perception mechanisms. From the perspective of information theory, different modalities can be viewed as projections of the same reality in different observation spaces, where each projection retains certain characteristics of the original information while also exhibiting its own noise and information loss.
Based on differences in information carriers, modalities in current research are typically categorized into the following major types:
Visual Modality includes images, static visual content, video sequences, and dynamic visual streams. The image modality stores spatial information in the form of two-dimensional pixel arrays, possessing highly structured characteristics and rich features such as texture, color, and shape. The video modality adds a temporal dimension to static images, introducing motion information, temporal relationships, and event development processes.
Textual Modality encompasses natural language text, symbolic sequences, and structured documents. Text is the primary carrier of human knowledge, possessing high abstraction, discreteness, and semantic richness. The text modality has high information density and strong semantic expression capability, but lacks direct perceptual grounding and needs to establish connections with the physical world through associations with other modalities such as vision and hearing.
Audio Modality includes speech signals, music content, environmental sounds, and non-speech audio such as ultrasound/infra-sound. The speech modality contains not only linguistic content but also multi-dimensional information such as the speaker's emotional state, identity characteristics, and dialectal accents. The audio modality has strong temporal characteristics and continuous information, playing an irreplaceable role in human-computer interaction.
Tactile Modality involves multi-dimensional tactile information including force, pressure, temperature, and texture. In fields such as robotic manipulation, virtual reality, and medical rehabilitation, the tactile modality provides intelligent systems with perceptual channels for direct interaction with the physical world.
Olfactory and Gustatory Modalities, although less extensively studied, hold significant application value in specific domains such as the food industry, chemical analysis, and medical diagnosis. With advancements in sensor technology, digital representation and processing of these two modalities are gradually becoming a research focus.
1.2.2 Essential Connotation of Multimodal Learning
Multimodal learning refers to the process by which intelligent systems integrate information from multiple modalities to achieve learning objectives. Compared to single-modality learning, the core advantage of multimodal learning lies in its ability to acquire more complete, robust, and comprehensive environmental representations. This essential characteristic can be understood from the following dimensions:
Information Complementarity is the fundamental reason for the existence of multimodal learning. Information carried by different modalities often exhibits incomplete overlapping semantic coverage. For example, a medical image may precisely display the spatial location and morphological characteristics of a lesion, while the corresponding physician's diagnostic report provides textual interpretation of the pathological mechanism and professional judgment. Fusing information from these two modalities can yield a more comprehensive and profound understanding of the patient's condition. In many real-world application scenarios, single-modality information is often insufficient to support accurate decision-making, while multimodal information fusion can remedy this deficiency.
