A Strange Gift on the Birthday Cake
*Xiao Yu is eight years old today.*
*The living room window has been polished by Mom until it's crystal clear. Sunshine flows in slowly like honey, making the three-tier strawberry cake on the coffee table glitter. Eight colorful candles stand on top of the cake—pink, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, white, and a golden one like a tiny magic wand.*
*Xiao Yu wears a light blue dress embroidered with little stars. Grandma has tied her hair into two small buns, showing her round face and a pair of bright dark eyes. She looks at the cake, then at the door, again and again, like a little squirrel waiting for its owner to come home.*
*"Why isn't Grandpa here yet?" she whispers to Mom.*
*Mom squats down, smooths the hem of her dress, and smiles: "Grandpa says he has a very special gift for you today. Maybe he's on his way right now."*
*"A special gift?" Xiao Yu's eyes light up immediately.*
Ding-dong—"*
*The doorbell rings. Xiao Yu dashes over like a gust of wind and yanks the door open.*
*Grandpa stands outside. Today he's wearing a faded navy blue Zhongshan suit, his hair neatly combed. But his eyes hold a smile that Xiao Yu can't quite read—as if he's hiding a whole secret. One hand is behind his back, while the other pats Xiao Yu's head.*
*"Happy eighth birthday to our Xiao Yu!" Grandpa's voice is like water just boiled in winter, steaming with warmth.*
Grandpa! Grandpa!" Xiao Yu tiptoes, her eyes darting around. "You said a special gift! What is it? A new backpack? Lego? Or—"*
*Grandpa slowly brings out the hand that was behind his back.*
*It's a note. A small, folded, pale yellow note. It looks very ordinary.*
*Xiao Yu freezes. She had expected a plump gift box, a glittering toy, or sweet chocolate. But in Grandpa's hand, there's really just a thin, light note.*
*"Just... just this?" She takes the note with a hint of disappointment.*
*Grandpa doesn't answer right away. He holds Xiao Yu's hand, walks slowly into the living room, sits on the sofa, and pats the spot beside him, asking Xiao Yu to come closer.*
*"Open it and see," Grandpa says softly, as if afraid of startling something.*
*Xiao Yu carefully unfolds the note. It's made of pale yellow Xuan paper with slightly fuzzy edges that feel soft to the touch. Eight black Chinese characters are written on it with a calligraphy brush, neatly arranged like eight little soldiers standing in a row.*
*Xiao Yu reads each character one by one:*
*"Ji, Wei, Wu, Shen, Xin, You, Bing, Shen."*
是不是写错了别人的生日呀?"*After reading, she looks up, blinking her big eyes at Grandpa: "Grandpa, what does this mean? Is it a password? A secret code? Did you write the wrong birthday?"*
Grandma walks over with a plate of cut fruit, smiling and tapping Xiao Yu's nose: "This is a gift Grandpa spent a long time preparing!"*
Dad puts down his phone, adjusts his glasses, and comes over to look at the eight characters: "Dad, this is Xiao Yu's..."*
*"Right," Grandpa nods slowly, "this is the Eight Characters I've prepared for Xiao Yu."*
*"Eight Characters?" Xiao Yu tilts her head. "Grandpa, what is 'Eight Characters'? Is it eight characters? Why eight? It doesn't look like a birthday gift at all."*
*The living room goes quiet for a second. Then Grandpa laughs, his eyes curving into two crescent moons.*
*"Good question," says Grandpa. "Tonight, Grandpa will tell you slowly. Inside this note, there's something more fun than all the toys you've ever received."*
*Xiao Yu's eyes light up again. She holds the note in her palm, like cradling a bird that might fly away.*
She thinks to herself:*
*It's a truly strange note. Eight Chinese characters. An eighth birthday. A thin sheet of paper.*
*Grandpa says there's a secret hidden in this note—a secret about "me."*
*Xiao Yu decides: tonight, she's going to figure out this secret.*

The Little Note with Eight Chinese Characters
*That night, the moon outside the window is as round as a white porcelain bowl.*
*Xiao Yu sits in Grandpa's study. It's not a big room—bookshelves cover three walls, filled with Grandpa's books. There's a thick dictionary, an illustrated geography book, thin comic books, and a few thread-bound ancient books that even Xiao Yu can't understand. The air carries a faint scent of ink, from the inkstone Grandpa ground that afternoon.*
*On the desk stands an old-fashioned table lamp with a pale green shade, dyeing the light soft and gentle. Xiao Yu carefully spreads out the pale yellow note on a blue velvet cloth, displaying it like a precious treasure.*
*Grandpa sits opposite her, puts on a pair of reading glasses, takes out another calligraphy brush, a small ink stick, and a piece of white paper from the drawer.*
*"Grandpa," Xiao Yu can't help speaking first, "why did you give me a piece of paper? Other kids get toys and cakes."*
*Grandpa smiles, pushes his glasses up: "You play with toys for a few days and forget them. You eat cake in a few bites and it's gone. But this note Grandpa is giving you will accompany you for a lifetime."*
*"A lifetime?" Xiao Yu widens her eyes.*
*"Yes, a lifetime," Grandpa nods. "Because what's written on this note is the sky at the moment you were born. The sky is different for everyone when they're born. This note is a copy of the sky at that moment."*
The sky?" Xiao Yu is even more confused. "But there's no sun or clouds drawn on the paper?"*
*"There are," Grandpa points to the eight characters, "the sun and clouds are all hidden in these eight characters."*
但爷爷说它们藏着天空——这怎么可能呢?*Xiao Yu stares at the eight characters. Ji, Wei, Wu, Shen, Xin, You, Bing, Shen. They really look like ordinary Chinese characters, nothing special. But Grandpa says they hide the sky—how could that be?*
*"Grandpa, tell me! What do these eight characters really mean?" Xiao Yu shakes Grandpa's arm coquettishly.*
*"Alright," Grandpa puts his glasses back on, "let Grandpa ask you a few questions first. You answer them."*
*"Okay!" Xiao Yu sit
