Foundations of Industrial Internet and Smart Manufacturing
The genesis of modern industrial transformation cannot be traced to a single innovation, discrete technological breakthrough, or isolated entrepreneurial vision. Rather, it emerges from the convergence of multiple evolutionary trajectories that have reshaped the means and methods of production over more than two centuries. The contemporary landscape of industrial activity—what scholars and practitioners increasingly refer to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0—represents not merely an incremental advancement upon preceding industrial paradigms but a fundamental reconceptualization of the relationship between physical manufacturing processes, digital information systems, and the human actors who design, operate, and benefit from industrial production. This opening chapter establishes the conceptual and historical foundations upon which the subsequent analyses of this volume rest, providing readers with the essential framework necessary for understanding the complex interplay of technologies, organizational practices, and strategic imperatives that define the current era of industrial development.
The recognition that industrial production has undergone distinct phases of transformation, each characterized by specific technological innovations, organizational arrangements, and societal implications, has become a standard analytical framework within both academic literature and industrial policy discourse. While the characterization of industrial history into discrete "revolutions" has been subject to legitimate scholarly critique regarding its somewhat teleological framing and its predominantly Western European historical perspective, the analytical utility of this framework remains substantial. The identification of distinct industrial eras enables comparative analysis, facilitates the identification of underlying patterns and causal mechanisms, and provides a useful heuristic for anticipating the characteristics and implications of ongoing and future transformations. Accordingly, this chapter employs the industrial revolution framework as its primary organizational structure while acknowledging and incorporating critical perspectives that complicate and enrich this analytical approach.
The First Industrial Revolution, conventionally dated from approximately 1760 to 1840, represented a watershed moment in human economic and social history. The transition from hand production methods to machine-based manufacturing, propelled by innovations in steam power, iron production, and textile machinery, fundamentally altered the productive capacity of human societies. The steam engine, refined and commercialized by James Watt in the latter half of the eighteenth century, provided a new and extraordinarily powerful source of mechanical energy that could be deployed across diverse applications and geographic locations, liberating industrial production from its historical dependence upon water power, wind, animal labor, and direct human physical exertion. This technological transformation was accompanied by and enabled significant organizational innovations, including the emergence of the factory system, which concentrated workers, machines, and raw materials within purpose-built structures under unified managerial direction.
The factory system represented more than a change in the physical arrangement of productive activities; it constituted a fundamental reorganization of labor, time, and social relations. Workers who had previously exercised substantial control over the pace, timing, and methods of their own labor found themselves subject to factory discipline, clock-time schedules, and managerial authority. The concentration of production also created new possibilities for supervision, quality control, and the systematic application of specialized tools and techniques. While the social consequences of these transformations were profound and often painful—including the deskilling of traditional craft workers, the harsh conditions of early factories, and the disruption of established communities and family economies—the aggregate effect was a dramatic increase in productive capacity and a corresponding expansion of the material conditions of life for at least a portion of the population.
The Second Industrial Revolution, spanning approximately from 1870 to 1914, witnessed the application of new technological capabilities—particularly in electricity, petroleum, and steel production—to industrial processes on an unprecedented scale. The development of electric power generation and distribution systems enabled the widespread adoption of electric motors and the flexible subdivision of factory space, facilitating the development of the assembly line production methods most famously exemplified by Henry Ford's Highland Park plant in 1913. The availability of cheap, strong steel—produced through processes such as the Bessemer converter and open-hearth furnace—provided the material foundation for expanded railroad networks, the construction of tall commercial buildings, and the development of new categories of machinery and consumer goods. Chemical innovations yielded new materials including synthetic dyes, fertilizers, and ultimately plastics, while the internal combustion engine transformed transportation and created entirely new industries centered on automobile manufacturing.
The organizational characteristics of the Second Industrial Revolution differed significantly from those of its predecessor. The emergence of large-scale corporate enterprises, enabled by the development of modern financial markets and the legal framework of the corporation, permitted the coordination of production across vast geographic distances and the mobilization of enormous quantities of capital. The multidivisional organizational structure, pioneered by Alfred Sloan at General Motors, introduced systematic approaches to management that separated strategic decision-making at the corporate level from operational management at the divisional level. These organizational innovations were accompanied by the development of systematic approaches to scientific management, exemplified by the work of Frederick Winslow Taylor, which applied scientific analysis to the study of work methods with the explicit goal of increasing efficiency and productivity.
The Third Industrial Revolution, often termed the Digital Revolution or the Computer Revolution, began in the latter half of the twentiet
