Chapter 1: The Land Under Your Feet Is Actually the "Mold" of Civilization?
Have you ever thought that the bite of the bun you eat in the morning hides the terrain code of your hometown? If you live in the north, the bun is most likely made of wheat; if you live in the south, you might bite into the sweetness of glutinous rice, or the softness of rice mixed with meat juice. If you have been to farther places during the holidays, you may have eaten baoersake in Xinjiang, Dai family cake in Yunnan, and shrimp dumplings in Guangdong. These breakfasts with different flavors are actually the "exam questions" given by different terrains to the locals - whatever land is under your feet, you are most suitable for growing what grain, and you can eat what breakfast.
The roads that children from different places walk to school are also completely different: if you live in the Songnen Plain in the northeast, you may step on a flat asphalt road to school, with endless corn fields on the roadside, and you can see harvesters running like small ants in the fields in autumn; if you live in the mountainous area of Guizhou, you may have to walk for more than ten minutes on the mountain road to school, with terraced fields piled up layer by layer on the roadside, and clouds floating above the mountain peaks; if you live in the water towns of southern Jiangsu, you may have to take a wu peng boat for a few minutes to school, with more bridges than roads, and moss growing on the walls of every household. These scenes that you have long been used to are actually the "background boards" drawn by the terrain for you.
This difference is even more obvious when you travel during holidays: you can see the yardang landform "carved" by the wind in the Devil's City in Xinjiang, where the earth-colored rock walls are like strange castles; you can see the karst peak forest "dissolved" by water in Guilin, Guangxi, where small hills emerge from the flat ground like bamboo shoots; you can see the forest and snow field "covered" by snow in Xuexiang, Heilongjiang, where the snow on the houses can be one meter thick. These completely different landscapes are all "working" behind different terrains - natural forces such as wind, water and ice will create completely different landforms when they encounter different rocks and soils.
But what is the relationship between these landscapes and our breakfast, the way to school, or even our New Year customs and accents? Have you noticed that people living on the Loess Plateau speak loudly, because the plateau is open and sound travels far; people living in the water towns of Jiangnan speak softly, because there are many rivers and streams, and sound is easily absorbed by water; people living on the grasslands can sing long tunes, because the grassland is too vast for short tunes to be sung. These things that you think are "culture" actually have the most underlying "mold", which is the terrain under your feet.
If civilization is compared to a smartphone, then terrain is its underlying hardware: chips, batteries, screens, and casings. These hardware determine what software the phone can install, how long the battery can last, and how much impact it can withstand. You cannot install 3A games on a feature phone because it does not have the corresponding hardware; nor can you ask people living on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to grow rice every day, because the altitude is too high and the temperature is too low for rice to survive. Terrain is the "hardware configuration" of civilization, which draws the most basic "pass line" for human survival and development.
For example, the civilizations of the Yellow River basin and the Yangtze River basin are completely different, even though they are both agricultural civilizations. The Loess Plateau in the Yellow River basin has loess soil, which is characterized by loose texture, good verticality, and rich minerals. So the ancestors did not need to burn bricks, they could just dig cave dwellings to live in, which are warm in winter and cool in summer, and can resist wind and sand; the loess is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, so crops can be grown without too much fertilizer. The earliest crop, millet, is drought-tolerant and barren-tolerant, which just fits the semi-arid climate of the Loess Plateau. So the civilization of the Yellow River basin, starting from the Banpo site, is millet farming, cave dwellings, and painted pottery culture. Later, the Central Plains civilization that developed also has always been dominated by pasta, and buildings like to use rammed earth and bricks and stones, because these are all the "hardware configurations" given by the Loess Plateau.
What about the Yangtze River basin? The terrain here is plain plus hills, and the soil is paddy soil, which is washed out by rivers, with good water retention and high fertility, just suitable for growing rice; and the south is humid and rainy, and the ground is easy to accumulate water, so the ancestors built stilt buildings, that is, putting the house on wooden piles, raising livestock below and living above, to prevent moisture, insects and snakes; the south has a dense network of rivers, so transportation relies on boats and commerce is developed. The earliest rice civilization Hemudu site already knew how to make canoes. Later, the developed Jiangnan civilization is dominated by rice, water town features, and prosperous commerce. These are all the "hardware configurations" given by the terrain of the Yangtze River basin.
Taking a more extreme example, the first step of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has an average altitude of more than 4,000 meters, with oxygen content only 60% of that of the plain, and the lowest temperature can reach minus 30 degrees Celsius, so it is impossible to grow crops at all. So the civilization here has taken another path since its birth: developing cold畜牧业, raising yaks and Tibetan sheep, living in blockhouses (with thick walls and small windows, warm and wind-resistant), eating tsamba and butter tea (high calorie, cold-resistant), and believing in Tibetan Buddhism (because the plateau environment is harsh, people need spiritual sustenance). Without the "hardware" of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, there would be no Tibetan culture we see now, nor the unique civilization of the "Roof of the World".
