In 138 BCE, in the late autumn, Chang'an lay shrouded in a melancholy haze.
The city gates creaked open, and a caravan of more than a hundred men slipped out quietly. They wore Han attire, swords at their waists, mounted on the sturdy horses typical of the Western Regions. At the head rode a young man about thirty years old, broad-shouldered, with a resolute face and steady, determined eyes. His name was Zhang Qian, and he was about to embark on one of the longest and most perilous journeys in human history.
No one knew that this expedition would last thirteen long years. No one knew that this ordinary palace attendant would, with his own two feet, carve a civilizational pathway across the heart of Eurasia—a road that would connect distant civilizations for millennia to come. The mission he carried seemed almost impossible: to cross through Xiongnu territory, travel thousands of miles to the Western Regions, find a nomadic people called the Yuezhi, and convince them to ally with Han China against the fearsome enemies of the northern grasslands.
An Empire's Anxiety
To understand the significance of Zhang Qian's journey, we must turn back the hands of time to this turbulent era.
In the second century BCE, the young Han Empire stood at a crossroads of history. On the vast northern grasslands, a nomadic people called the Xiongnu lurked like a dormant beast, constantly threatening the empire's peace. Xiongnu cavalry struck with lightning speed, requiring no cities, no supply lines—they simply mounted their horses when autumn winds began to blow and surged across the fertile lands of the Central Plains like a rising tide. They burned, killed, and plundered, then vanished into the endless steppes with their spoils, leaving behind only devastated villages and homeless families.
Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang himself led an army of three hundred thousand men against the Xiongnu in 200 BCE, only to find himself surrounded for seven days and seven nights near Baideng, near modern-day Datong—an episode known as the "Humiliation of Baideng." The founding emperor, who had conquered all under heaven, ultimately had to buy peace through marriage alliances and tribute. For the next sixty years, Han China endured a policy of忍辱含垢, sending silk, grain, and gold annually to purchase temporary border security.
But matrimonial gifts could not bridge the chasm between peoples, nor would Xiongnu ambitions be sated by tribute. Every autumn, after the harvest, their horsemen would drive their flocks southward, filling their own granaries with the toil and sweat of Central Plains families. The people of Han lived in constant fear, and the empire's dignity eroded slowly under the weight of humiliation.
当历史的车轮滚动到 the reign of Emperor Wu Liu Che, the situation began to change. This emperor, who had ascended to the throne at only sixteen years old, possessed extraordinary vision and ambition. He refused to accept the humiliating peace, wanted to resolve the Xiongnu threat permanently, sought to expand the empire's borders, and aspired to build an unprecedented mighty dynasty.
The Emperor's Vision and a Decision That Changed History
In 140 BCE, the second year of his reign, Emperor Wu began secretly planning a counterattack against the Xiongnu.
To defeat the Xiongnu, one must first understand them. The emperor knew deeply that what made the Xiongnu so difficult to overcome was not only their fierce cavalry but also the Central Plains' profound ignorance of the northern world. In the Chang'an court, rumors about the Western Regions were scarce. What kingdoms existed there? What peoples? Were they enemies or allies of the Xiongnu? Han China possessed almost no intelligence on these matters.
At this moment, a piece of intelligence caught Emperor Wu's attention. It was said that west of Xiongnu territory lived a people called the Yuezhi. This nation had once been powerful, but the Xiongnu had soundly defeated them, even beheading their king and making his skull into an ornate drinking cup. The surviving Yuezhi were forced to abandon their homeland and migrate westward in search of new lands. A nation destroyed by the Xiongnu, a people bound to them by blood vengeance—if they could be persuaded to ally with Han, attacking from both sides, the Xiongnu would find themselves caught between hammer and anvil.
This idea flashed like lightning across the night sky, igniting a fire in the young emperor's heart. But to transform such an audacious notion into reality required someone daring yet prudent, someone unafraid of hardship. This person would need courage, wisdom, and perseverance beyond ordinary measure.
And so, Zhang Qian stepped onto the stage of history.
Concerning Zhang Qian's early years, we know precious little. He came from an ordinary family in the Hanzhong region and served as a Lang Zhong—a minor palace official that, though seemingly insignificant, provided access to the emperor's inner circle. This position, while lacking grand authority, offered Zhang Qian opportunities to participate in the empire's core decisions. He was steady and capable, and reportedly tall and robust, well-suited to endure harsh conditions.
When Emperor Wu issued his call for volunteers, Zhang Qian did not hesitate. He enlisted as a Lang Zhong official and was selected to lead this diplomatic mission. In the autumn of 138 BCE, he departed Chang'an with over a hundred companions, setting foot on this road where death lurked at every turn.
Significantly, among Zhang Qian's companions was a special figure—a guide from Xiongnu named Gan Fu. This Xiongnu man's inclusion was perhaps one of Zhang Qian's wisest decisions. After all, across vast grasslands and deserts, having someone familiar with nomadic ways of life to lead the way was invaluable beyond measure.
Setback at the Outset: The First Capture
Zhang Qian's plan was to bypass Xiongnu-controlled territories, depart from Longxi, advance westward through the Hexi Corridor, traverse the Western Regions, and finally reach where the Yuezhi had settled.
However, the ideal was grand, but reality proved harsh.
