Close your eyes and imagine yourself sitting in a spacecraft, orbiting Earth at a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour. As you travel farther from Earth's surface, you first see layers of white clouds floating above the deep blue oceans. As the distance increases, your field of vision expands, and the full shape of Earth begins to appear before you—a blue and white sphere surrounded by a delicate halo of atmosphere, silently rotating in the darkness of space.
This was the view that Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders first saw when looking back at Earth from lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, 1968. He later recalled: "We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth." This photograph, later called "Earthrise," fundamentally changed the way humanity views its home.
From that moment on, "Earth" was no longer just the land beneath our feet, the sky above our heads, and the environment around us—it became a system that needed to be understood holistically. In this system, oceans interact with the atmosphere, climate shapes terrain, and human civilization is closely connected to the natural environment. And the discipline that studies all of this is Geography.
Geography is the discipline that studies the spatial distribution patterns of natural phenomena and human activities on Earth's surface. The word "Geography" comes from the Greek "Geo" (Earth) and "graphein" (to describe), so literally it means "to describe the Earth." The core mission of geography is to answer three fundamental questions: Where are things located? Why are they there? And what are the implications?
Geography can be divided into several branches, primarily Natural Geography and Human Geography. Natural Geography studies Earth's physical environment, including climate, hydrology, landforms, soil, vegetation, and the formation, distribution, and changes of these natural elements. Human Geography studies the spatial distribution of human activities, including population geography, urban geography, economic geography, cultural geography, and political geography.
It is important to note that geography is neither purely natural science nor purely social science, but rather a comprehensive discipline that bridges both. Geographers use natural science methods to understand the physical environment while also employing social science research methods to explore human activities. This interdisciplinary perspective allows geography to comprehensively understand the complex relationship between humans and the environment.
To understand the geographical phenomena on Earth's surface, we must first understand Earth's internal structure. Earth is a sphere composed of several concentric layers, from outside to inside: the Crust, the Mantle, the Outer Core, and the Inner Core.
The crust is Earth's outermost solid shell, with an average thickness of about 17 kilometers (continental crust averages about 35 km thick, while oceanic crust averages only about 7 km). The crust is primarily composed of rocks containing silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium—these rocks form the ground beneath our feet, mountains, plateaus, and the ocean floor.
The crust is not a complete shell but is divided into many enormous plates that float slowly over the soft asthenosphere below. This is the basic concept of plate tectonics. At plate boundaries, we find the most geographically active regions—volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and mountain building all concentrate here. More than 90% of the world's earthquakes and volcanic activities occur along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a narrow zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean that marks the boundaries between the Pacific Plate and other plates.
Below the crust lies the mantle, with a thickness of about 2,900 kilometers and accounting for 84% of Earth's volume. The mantle is divided into upper and lower mantle sections. The upper mantle's upper portion includes the asthenosphere, where rocks are partially molten and somewhat plastic—this is the fundamental reason why tectonic plates can move. Temperatures in the mantle increase gradually from about 500°C at the top to about 4,000°C at the boundary with the outer core.
The convective movement of mantle material is the driving force behind plate tectonics. When material deep in the mantle is heated and becomes lighter, it rises slowly; when it reaches the base of the crust, it flows horizontally, pushing the overlying plates; when heat is released, the material cools and sinks, forming a complete convection cycle. Although this process is slow (only a few centimeters per year), it has shaped billions of years of geological history on Earth's surface.
The core is located at Earth's innermost region, divided into outer core and inner core. The outer core is liquid, about 2,200 kilometers thick, composed primarily of liquid iron and nickel. The inner core is solid, with a radius of about 1,220 kilometers, primarily composed of solid iron and nickel. The core's temperature is extremely high, reaching 5,000°C to 6,000°C, comparable to the Sun's surface temperature.
The core's importance lies not only in its enormous heat but also in the geomagnetic field it generates. Convection of liquid metal in the outer core produces electric currents, which in turn create a magnetic field surrounding Earth. This magnetic field extends tens of thousands of kilometers into space, forming the magnetosphere, which acts like a giant protective umbrella, shielding Earth from the Sun's high-energy charged particles (solar wind) and protecting our atmosphere and life from radiation damage.
Earth's total surface area is approximately 510 million square kilometers, with ocean covering about 361 million square kilometers (71%) and land covering about 149 million square kilometers (29%). This distribution pattern
