如果两个小朋友在同一年、差不多同一个月份先后出生，他们为什么会发现自己属于完全不同的"命运符号"呢？一个被叫做"小龙"，一个被叫做"小狮子"，可他们的爸爸妈妈、爷爷奶奶却给他们起了别的名字。这到底是怎么回事？符号，是怎么"认出"一个孩子的？两个来自不同文化的小朋友，又能不能在符号的森林里相遇？
Imagine two children born almost in the same month of the same year—why might they discover they belong to completely different "destiny symbols"? One is called "Little Dragon," the other "Little Lion," yet their parents and grandparents gave them very different names. So how exactly do symbols "recognize" a child? Can two children from different cultures ever meet inside the forest of symbols?

一、星空小组的奇遇 · The Star Group's Encounter
2024 年 7 月 15 日，北京时间晚上八点整。
July 15th, 2024, 8:00 PM Beijing time.
那一刻，在地球的另一边，伦敦刚好是下午一点；在更远的大西洋彼岸，纽约的钟楼刚刚敲响上午八点的钟声。三个时区，六台电脑，六个戴着耳机的小朋友，几乎在同一秒按下了屏幕上那个亮闪闪的"加入会议"按钮。
At that very moment, on the other side of the Earth, London was at 1:00 in the afternoon; farther across the Atlantic, the clock tower in New York had just struck eight in the morning. Three time zones, six computers, six children wearing headsets—almost in the same second, they pressed the shining "Join Meeting" button on their screens.
这是一场叫做"小小宇宙探索者线上夏令营"（Tiny Universe Explorers Online Camp）的活动，主办方是国际青少年组织"星星之桥"（StarBridge）。每年夏天，他们都会从世界各地招募大约一百名 8 到 12 岁的孩子，让他们在网络的两端相遇，一起完成关于星空、神话和文化的项目。今年的营地主题是"符号与星空"（Symbols and the Starry Sky），而营地里的孩子们，被随机分成了十几个小组——每个小组都有一个浪漫的名字。
This was an activity called "Tiny Universe Explorers Online Camp," organized by StarBridge, an international youth organization. Every summer, they recruited about a hundred children aged 8 to 12 from around the world, brought them together through the internet, and let them work on projects about the starry sky, mythology, and culture. This year's theme was "Symbols and the Starry Sky," and the children were randomly divided into a dozen or so groups—each group given a romantic name.
小龙和莉莉分到的小组，叫做"星空小组"（Star Group）。
Xiao Long and Li Li's group was called the "Star Group."
"星空小组"一共有六个人：
- 小龙，10 岁，来自中国北京。
- 莉莉，11 岁，来自英国伦敦，但她妈妈是法国人。
- 阿杰，9 岁，来自印度孟买。
- 米娅，10 岁，来自美国纽约。
- 奥马尔，11 岁，来自埃及开罗。
- 索菲，9 岁，来自巴西圣保罗。
The Star Group had six members:
- Xiao Long, 10, from Beijing, China.
- Li Li, 11, from London, England, but her mother is French.
- Ajay, 9, from Mumbai, India.
- Mia, 10, from New York, USA.
- Omar, 11, from Cairo, Egypt.
- Sophie, 9, from São Paulo, Brazil.
六个人，五大洲，四种母语——他们要在一台电脑屏幕上认识彼此。带领他们的小组辅导员，是一位戴着圆眼镜、说话很温柔的中国老师，她叫林老师（Ms. Lin）。
Six children, five continents, four mother tongues—they would have to get to know each other on a single computer screen. Their group counselor was a gentle Chinese teacher with round glasses, named Ms. Lin.
林老师在屏幕上打开了六个小方格，每个方格里探出一颗好奇的小脑袋。她微笑着说：
Ms. Lin opened six small squares on the screen, and a curious little head peeked out from each. She smiled and said:

The six little faces on the screen all lit up with excitement. This was their first meeting; everyone was a little nervous, but also a little expectant.
奥马尔第一个开口——他是个热情的开罗男孩，头上戴着一顶绣着星星的棒球帽："大家好！我叫奥马尔，我的生日是 2003 年 11 月 22 日，金牛座！" Omar spoke first—a warm boy from Cairo wearing a baseball cap embroidered with stars: "Hello everyone! My name is Omar, my birthday is November 22nd, 2003, and I'm a Taurus!"
米娅紧跟着举起手："Hi！我是米娅，生日是 2013 年 2 月 14 日，水瓶座！" Mia quickly raised her hand: "Hi! I'm Mia, my birthday is February 14th, 2013, and I'm an Aquarius!"
阿杰用带着印度口音的英语说："Hello，我是阿杰，我的生日是 2014 年 6 月 9 日，双子座！" Ajay said in English with an Indian accent: "Hello, I'm Ajay, my birthday is June 9th, 2014, and I'm a Gemini!"
索菲害羞地笑了笑："Hola，我叫索菲，2014 年 4 月 18 日，白羊座！" Sophie smiled shyly: "Hola, my name is Sophie, April 18th, 2014, and I'm an Aries!"
小龙和莉莉对视了一眼——他们已经按顺序约好，小龙先说。
Xiao Long and Li Li glanced at each other—they had already agreed on the order, Xiao Long speaking first.

二、生日大揭秘 · The Great Birthday Reveal
小龙深吸一口气，凑近麦克风：
Xiao Long took a deep breath and leaned close to the microphone:
> "大家好，我叫小龙，来自北京。我的生日是——农历 2012 年，七月十六。" > > "Hello everyone, my name is Xiao Long, and I'm from Beijing. My birthday is—the 16th day of the 7th lunar month, 2012."
说完，他还补充了一句： Then he added:
> "妈妈说，那一年是龙年，所以我的小名就叫'小龙'。" > > "My mom says that year was the Year of the Dragon, so my nickname is 'Little Dragon.'"
屏幕那边传来几个"哇"的声音。米娅的眼睛亮起来："Wow——龙！好酷！" Several "wows" came from the screen. Mia's eyes lit up: "Wow—a dragon! So cool!"
莉莉接着开口了。她用温柔的、带一点点法国口音的英语说：
Li Li spoke next. She said in gentle English with a slight French accent:

她又用中文说了一遍，因为小龙的中文比她的英语更好： She also said it in Chinese, because Xiao Long's Chinese was better than her English:

小组里的几个孩子立刻反应过来——狮子座！那是十二星座里最威风的那个。 The children in the group immediately reacted—Leo! That was the most majestic of the twelve zodiac signs.
奥马尔兴奋地拍桌子："Wow！小龙和莉莉是同年同月生的！" Omar excitedly slapped the table: "Wow! Xiao Long and Li Li were born in the same year and the same month!"
索菲也点头："对呀！他们差不多同一天出生的！" Sophie also nodded: "Yes! They were born almost on the same day!"
可是—— But—
小龙举起手，眉头皱了起来："可是，可是！为什么我是龙，她是狮子？" Xiao Long raised his hand, frowning: "But, but! Why am I a dragon, and she's a lion?"
莉莉也歪着头："对呀，我也想问……我们是不是应该属于同一个符号？" Li Li also tilted her head: "Yes, I want to ask too… shouldn't we belong to the same symbol?"
屏幕里安静了两秒钟。林老师扶了扶眼镜，嘴角露出了一个神秘的笑容。
There was silence on the screen for two seconds. Ms. Lin adjusted her glasses, and a mysterious smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.

三、同年同月不同日？· Same Year, Same Month, Different Day?
"非常好的问题，" 林老师说，"在我们回答'为什么'之前，我想先让你们自己做个实验。" "Excellent question," said Ms. Lin. "Before we answer 'why,' I'd like you to do an experiment yourselves."

The six children lowered their heads and began searching for information. Omar opened an English astrology website, Mia pulled out a letter her mother had written when she was born, Xiao Long pulled out the family's old almanac, and Sophie asked her mother to help her look things up…
