The capacity for language stands as one of the most distinctive features separating humans from other species, and the language acquisition process that children accomplish within just a few years of life represents one of the most remarkable achievements in the entire history of human cognitive development. From the reflexive cries of a newborn to the sophisticated linguistic abilities of a three-year-old who commands thousands of words and constructs complex sentences to express abstract thoughts, the speed and magnitude of this transformation remains unparalleled in the development of any other human cognitive capacity. It is precisely this extraordinary phenomenon that has drawn scholars from psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, education, and numerous other disciplines to invest substantial effort in uncovering the mechanisms and principles underlying this developmental trajectory.
Understanding the scientific foundations of child language development carries profound significance not only for theoretical advancement but also for practical applications. For developmental psychologists, language acquisition provides a natural laboratory for investigating how innate and environmental factors, biological and social influences, jointly shape the human mind. For linguists, the process by which children acquire their native language grammar offers crucial evidence for evaluating various linguistic theories. For educators and speech-language pathologists, accurate understanding of typical language development trajectories and individual variations serves as the prerequisite for identifying language disorders and implementing effective interventions. For parents, knowledge of language development patterns facilitates the creation of supportive linguistic environments that promote their children's language growth.
This chapter systematically introduces the scientific foundations of child language development, establishing the theoretical and methodological groundwork for the in-depth exploration undertaken in subsequent chapters of this book. We will first articulate the scientific significance of language development research, with particular emphasis on the critical period characteristics of language acquisition during early childhood and its neurobiological foundations. Second, we will provide a detailed introduction to the major theoretical frameworks in contemporary language acquisition research, including behavioral theory, nativism, cognitive developmental theory, and interactionist approaches, along with an analysis of each theory's unique contributions and limitations for understanding the language development of children aged one to three. The third section surveys the primary methodologies employed in contemporary language development research, including longitudinal studies, cross-sectional studies, experimental methods, and observational approaches, while analyzing the strengths and limitations of various research designs. Finally, we will examine the unique value of bilingual environments for young children's language development and the important role of cultural factors in language acquisition.
The Scientific Significance of Language Development Research
The Concept of Critical Period and Its Neurobiological Foundations
When discussing the scientific significance of child language development, one core concept that cannot be avoided is the critical period for language acquisition. The critical period hypothesis posits that human language development occurs within a temporal window during which linguistic input can be effectively and naturally received and processed by the brain to form complete language competence; once this period has passed, even with equivalent or greater linguistic input, learners find it difficult to achieve native-like language proficiency. This concept was first proposed by neurobiologist Eric Lenneberg in 1967. Based on his research with aphasia patients, Lenneberg suggested that children between the ages of two and puberty are within the critical period for language acquisition, during which the brain exhibits high plasticity and language functions have not yet fully lateralized to the left hemisphere.
Evidence supporting the existence of a critical period comes from multiple levels. First are clinical case studies. From the late 19th to early 20th century, several "wild child" cases were documented, with the most famous being Victor from Avignon, France (known as the "Wild Boy of Aveyron") and Kaspar Hauser of Hanover, Germany. These children were completely isolated from human linguistic environments during early childhood, and despite extensive subsequent training, they never fully acquired human language. More systematic evidence comes from research on language acquisition by deaf children. Before sign language became a formal educational language, many congenitally deaf children who entered school to learn sign language after the critical period had passed often did not achieve the natural fluency in sign language grammar that deaf children who learned sign language from early childhood possessed.
Neuroimaging research has provided more direct biological evidence for the critical period. Research by Patricia Kuhl and colleagues demonstrates that infants' brains exhibit highly selective and sensitive processing of speech sounds between 6 and 12 months of age. Infants can distinguish phonetic differences across almost all languages in early life, but this universal phonetic discrimination ability gradually declines with age, replaced by the native language phonological system. For example, Japanese infants can distinguish the English /r/ and /l/ phoneme contrast at six months, but by 10-12 months, this ability shows significant decline, precisely because Japanese lacks the /r/-/l/ phonemic distinction, and the infant brain begins to specialize its phonetic processing abilities to adapt to the native language environment. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) studies further reveal significant differences in brain activation patterns between adults and children during language processing, with adults exhibiting stronger left hemisphere lateralization in language processing.
