Have you ever had an experience where you wanted a special pencil case with your name carved on it, a display stand that fits all your Lego figures, or a little ornament that looks exactly like your pet cat, but all the products sold in stores were designed by others and nothing like what you wanted? Don't worry, 3D printing technology is the "magic manufacturing" tool made for you—it can turn anything you imagine from the virtual magic world into a real object you can touch and use, just like Harry Potter's magic wand.
Unlike subtractive manufacturing, 3D printing belongs to "Additive Manufacturing". You can think of it as "stacking magic": it doesn't need a large piece of raw material at the beginning, but builds the thing you want layer by layer from scratch, just like building a castle with Lego or stacking a sandcastle. You can make it whatever shape you want, with almost no waste. The formula for material utilization of additive manufacturing is as follows: $$\eta

The formula for material utilization of additive manufacturing is as follows: $$\eta_{additive} = \frac{V_{used}}{V_{total}} \times 100\%$$ Where $V_{used}$ is the volume of material actually used for the product, and $V_{total}$ is the total volume of material put in. Because 3D printing only uses just enough material for the product with almost no extra waste, the material utilization rate can usually reach more than 95%, which is several times higher than traditional subtractive manufacturing.
Let's do a small comparison: if you want a 10cm-high dinosaur toy, using traditional subtractive manufacturing, you need to take a whole cubic wood with a side length of 15cm, cut off all the excess parts, and the final dinosaur volume is only 100cm³, the wood utilization rate is less than 5%, and the remaining 1400cm³ wood becomes waste. For 3D printing, you only need to put in 105cm³ of printing material, just enough to make the dinosaur, the remaining 5cm³ is support material (used to support the suspended part, which can be removed after printing), and the material utilization rate can reach more than 95%, with almost no waste.
Additive manufacturing also has a much more powerful "magic skill" than subtractive manufacturing: it can easily make complex structures that traditional craftsmanship cannot make at all. For example, if you want to make a soccer model with a hollow interior and a hollow pattern on the surface, using traditional subtractive manufacturing, the cutting tool cannot reach the inside of the model, so it can only make two halves and then stick them together, which is expensive and easy to crack; but 3D printing is stacked from bottom to top, and the internal structure can be directly "stacked" out, no splicing, one-time molding. Let's do the math: the total volume of this soccer model is 150cm³, traditional manufacturing requires 200cm³ of raw material to make two halves of the mold, and the material utilization rate is only 75%; while 3D printing only needs 160cm³ of material (including 10cm³ of temporary support), and the material utilization rate is as high as 93%, even including the cost of support material, it is more than half cheaper than traditional manufacturing.
(FDM: Fused Deposition Modeling)
