Chapter 1: Prologue — The Question of Intelligence: From Pavlov to AlphaGo
In the deep autumn of 1854, at a dilapidated military hospital on the shores of Lake Scutari in the Crimean Peninsula, Florence Nightingale was writing furiously by the dim light of a candle. This 34-year-old British nurse had spent months on the battlefield. Her quill scratched across yellowed paper: death tolls, causes of death, times of death, places of death. These numbers were cold and cruel, yet they were quietly transforming humanity's way of fighting death.
Nightingale could not have known that this work—improving behavioral decisions through observation, recording, and feedback—would become the core paradigm of an entirely new discipline more than a century later. She could not have known that those candles and quills of the 1860s would be replaced by silicon chips and algorithms; she could not have known that when she calculated how mortality could be reduced from 42% to 2% through improved ventilation, cleaner diets, and patient isolation, she was actually conducting the earliest systematic reinforcement learning experiments.
This is a wonderful echo of knowledge, an intellectual resonance spanning time and space. When we stand today at the forefront of the artificial intelligence revolution and look back at the development of reinforcement learning, we discover that the origins of this path are far more ancient, profound, and filled with the radiance of humanity than we could have imagined.
The Ancient Dream of Pursuing Intelligence
Humanity's questioning of intelligence began at the dawn of civilization. The ancient Greek inscription at Delphi—"Know thyself"—was not only the starting point of philosophy but also humanity's first attempt to understand its own cognitive abilities. Thousands of years later, when we discuss artificial intelligence, we are actually continuing an ancient question: Can we create intelligent systems capable of learning, decision-making, and adaptation?
This question matters not only because it concerns technological progress, but more fundamentally because it touches the essential mysteries of life itself. What is learning? What is decision-making? What is intelligence? These questions flow like a river—from the debates of ancient Greek philosophers, through the speculations of medieval scholasticism, past the fervor of Renaissance anatomical studies, and finally into the ocean of modern science.
Throughout this long journey of exploration, one central question persists: If we can understand and replicate the mechanisms of intelligence, can we truly create intelligence? This question leads us to reinforcement learning—a paradigm where machines learn through interaction with their environment.
Pavlov's Dog: The First Key to Learning
Let us turn back the clock to Saint Petersburg in 1902. In an unassuming laboratory, Russian physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was conducting what seemed like a simple experiment. He placed powdered meat into a dog's mouth and observed the secretion of saliva. This was nothing more than ordinary conditioned reflex research in physiology, but Pavlov's keen observation gave it extraordinary significance.
Pavlov noticed that the dogs began secreting saliva before they even saw the food—when they heard the footsteps of the feeder, saw the feeder's figure, or even just the experimenter's appearance. This phenomenon led Pavlov to realize: dogs not only respond to direct stimuli (food) but have also learned to associate irrelevant signals (footsteps, figures) with direct stimuli.
This discovery opened a door to the essence of learning. Pavlov designed a series of ingenious experiments to study the formation mechanism of these associations. He used a metronome to produce sounds—initially, dogs showed no response to this sound; but after the metronome sound was repeatedly paired with food, the dogs began secreting saliva simply upon hearing the sound. This was the famous Classical Conditioning.
Pavlov's experiments revealed a profound and universal principle: learning is not merely the accumulation of knowledge, but the discovery and internalization of environmental regularities. The dog learned to predict: when the sound响起,food was coming. This predictive ability—extracting patterns from past experiences and adjusting future behavior accordingly—is the core essence of learning.
Years later, when computer scientists began building learning systems, they were amazed to discover that Pavlov's principles could be elegantly formalized. The dog's brain learns to predict by adjusting the connection strengths between neurons—a concept that evolved into the core concept of Reinforcement Learning: the Value Function. The dog learned to estimate the value of each state—hearing footsteps means an increased likelihood of obtaining food, and this value estimation guides its behavioral response.
Pavlov's legacy extends far beyond this. His experimental methodology—rigorous quantitative observation, systematic variable control, and relentless pursuit of causal relationships—established the scientific method standard for subsequent learning research. More importantly, his work provided a fundamental framework for understanding learning: how organisms acquire knowledge through interaction with the environment, a framework that remains the theoretical foundation of reinforcement learning today.
Thorndike's Box: The Wisdom of Trial and Error
While Pavlov was conducting his conditioned reflex experiments in Saint Petersburg, on the other side of the Atlantic, at Columbia University in America, psychologist Edward Thorndike was conducting another pioneering study. Thorndike's experimental apparatus was simple yet ingenious: a hungry cat was placed inside a "puzzle box," with the door controlled by a rope or lever. Only when the cat performed a specific action—pulling a string or pressing a pedal—would the door open, allowing the cat to access the food outside.
