Introduction to Additive Manufacturing
---
Additive Manufacturing (AM), as one of the core technological hallmarks of the Third Industrial Revolution, is profoundly reshaping the global manufacturing landscape and paradigms. This technology fundamentally subverts the traditional "subtractive forming" manufacturing logic by achieving direct fabrication of three-dimensional complex parts through layer-by-layer material deposition, thereby breaking through numerous limitations of traditional processes in geometric complexity, material utilization, and production cycle. Since Chuck Hull invented Stereolithography (SLA) in 1986, additive manufacturing has undergone leapfrog development from laboratory prototype fabrication to industrial-scale production, with its application domains extending from early rapid prototyping to numerous strategic emerging industries such as aerospace, medical implants, and automotive lightweighting. This chapter systematically elaborates the disciplinary positioning and development trajectory of additive manufacturing technology, establishes a unified professional terminology system, and constructs the macro cognitive framework necessary for readers to understand subsequent technical chapters.

According to the definition in international standard ISO/ASTM 52900:2021, additive manufacturing refers to "the process of fabricating parts or products by adding material layer upon layer from three-dimensional model data." Unlike traditional manufacturing methods that process raw materials into finished products, additive manufacturing adopts the discrete-deposition manufacturing principle of "from points to lines, from lines to surfaces, from surfaces to volumes," decomposing complex three-dimensional geometries into a series of two-dimensional planar fabrication steps, achieving solid forming through repeated material deposition and solidification. This technology is essentially a product of deep integration between digital information technology and advanced materials science, embodying the advanced manufacturing concept of "design is manufacturing, manufacturing is design."
From the perspective of philosophy of technology, additive manufacturing represents a fundamental transformation of manufacturing paradigms from "subtractive thinking" to "constructive thinking." In traditional subtractive manufacturing, the core issue of process planning is how to efficiently remove excess material from raw materials; whereas in additive manufacturing, the core issue of process planning transforms into how to optimally plan material deposition paths and process parameters. This paradigm shift not only brings technological innovation but also profoundly affects product design methodologies, supply chain structures, and the value creation methods of the manufacturing industry.
Additive manufacturing technology possesses four essential characteristics that distinguish it from traditional manufacturing methods, and these characteristics collectively constitute the core competitiveness and application value of this technology.
First, unlimited geometric freedom. Traditional manufacturing processes are constrained by factors such as tool motion degrees of freedom and mold forming capabilities, making it difficult to fabricate truly complex geometries such as enclosed cavities, conformal cooling channels, and topology-optimized lattice structures. Additive manufacturing, however, is only limited by slice layer thickness and machining travel, enabling mold-free forming of "what you design is what you get." Whether it is an overhanging structure with a draft angle approaching 90 degrees or a microfluidic chip with minimum feature sizes of only tens of microns, additive manufacturing can form them as a whole in one piece without requiring separate processing and subsequent assembly. This characteristic has irreplaceable technical value in fields such as high-performance heat exchangers, blisks (bladed disks), and personalized medical implants.
Second, high material utilization efficiency. In traditional subtractive manufacturing processes, the effective utilization rate of raw materials is typically only 20% to 40%, with large amounts of material being removed in the form of chips and waste during processing. Taking titanium alloy TC4 commonly used in the aerospace field as an example, when machining an aerospace frame part using five-axis milling, the final material utilization rate often does not exceed 15%, meaning over 85% of the expensive raw material is converted into metal swarf that is difficult to recycle. Additive manufacturing adopts a near-net-shape material strategy, theoretically capable of increasing material utilization to over 90%. For strategically scarce resources such as gold, platinum group metals, and rare earth magnetic materials, the high material utilization rate of additive manufacturing holds significant economic value and strategic importance.
Third, the possibility of functional integration. Additive manufacturing technology can not only form complex geometries but, more importantly, supports the realization of gradient distribution and functional integration of materials within the same part. By controlling laser or electron beam scanning strategies, functionally graded regions transitioning from one material composition to another can be constructed inside parts, enabling diverse functional combinations such as hard-tough composites, wear-resistant-corrosion-resistant composites, and conductive-insulating composites on the same part. For example, in the transition region between the airfoil body and the dovetail of an aero-engine turbine blade, composition gradient from high-temperature alloy to high-strength titanium alloy can be achieved through functionally graded material technology, eliminating the interface weakness associated with traditional brazing or mechanical fastening. This capability makes additive manufacturing a key technological pathway for achieving "material-structure-function integrated manufacturing."
Fourth, manufacturing preparation agility. Additive ma
