导论:摄影视觉语法的学科定位与研究范式 / Introduction: Disciplinary Positioning and Research Paradigms of Photographic Visual Grammar
Photography has been in a constant identity tussle between "technical product" and "art form" since the French government announced the purchase of the Daguerreotype patent and opened it to the world on August 19, 1839. The essence of this tension does not lie in the immaturity of the photographic medium itself, but in the long-standing absence of a systematic, cross-culturally verifiable underlying rule system in the academic circle to explain the production logic, decoding rules and communication effectiveness of photographic visual symbols. This rule system is exactly the "Photographic Visual Grammar (PVG)" defined in this book: it is not the traditional "composition skills" or "light and shadow processing experience", but an interdisciplinary rule system integrating visual semiotics, cognitive neuroscience, media studies and computational aesthetics. It not only explains the underlying mechanism by which photographic visual elements (composition, light and shadow, color) affect audience perception and cognition, but also provides a quantifiable, reproducible and verifiable operational framework for photographic creation, visual communication and media communication.

Photography has been in a constant identity tussle between "technical product" and "art form" since the French government announced the purchase of the Daguerreotype patent and opened it to the world on August 19, 1839. 1.1 核心概念界定:从经验法则到系统规则体系
The concept of "visual grammar" originates from the semiotic theory of linguistics: Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure proposed in *Course in General Linguistics* that language is a symbolic system composed of "signifier" (sound/image form) and "signified" (conceptual meaning), and its combination and aggregation rules are "grammar" [^1]. In the mid-20th century, Roland Barthes extended this framework to the visual field, and proposed in *Image Rhetoric* that visual symbols also have a set of interpretable rule systems, namely "visual grammar", whose core is the law that visual elements transmit specific meanings through operations such as combination, contrast and repetition [^1].
Unlike traditional visual grammar research which focuses on visual media such as painting and film that are subjectively constructed by humans, it does not adapt to the unique attributes of photography as a "mechanical reproduction medium". Photography is a special visual form that emerged after the first industrial revolution: the production of its visual symbols is first completed through the mechanical mapping of real scenes by optical lenses, and the selective construction of creators (composition, light and shadow adjustment, color correction, etc.) is secondary processing under the constraints of physical imaging, rather than subjective creation from scratch. This production logic of "physical constraints take priority over subjective expression" determines that photographic visual grammar must contain two independent and related rules: one is the physical rule layer adapted to the constraints of optical imaging, sensor characteristics and post-processing technology, and the other is the symbolic rule layer adapted to the combination of visual symbols, cognitive decoding and communication effectiveness.
这一属性差异直接导致摄影视觉语法与绘画、电影视觉语法的核心分野:绘画的视觉语法首先服务于创作者的主观表达,其规则的核心是“如何通过视觉元素传递创作者的意图”;电影的视觉语法包含时序维度,其规则的核心是“如何通过连续帧的组合传递叙事逻辑”;而摄影视觉语法的核心是“如何在单帧、静态、机械复制的约束下,实现视觉信息的高效传递与精准解码”。For example, when expressing "portraits under backlighting", painting can completely ignore the physical properties of light and realize expression through subjective adjustment of the brightness and color of the outline, while photography must first meet the optical constraints of the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter, ISO), and then realize the creator's intention through grammatical operations such as composition selection, light and shadow adjustment and color correction. This attribute difference directly leads to the core differentiation between photographic visual grammar and painting and film visual grammar: the visual grammar of painting first serves the subjective expression of the creator, and its core rule is "how to convey the creator's intention through visual elements"; the visual grammar of film includes the time dimension, and its core rule is "how to convey narrative logic through the combination of continuous frames"; while the core of photographic visual grammar is "how to realize the efficient transmission and accurate decoding of visual informat
