Why Use Systems Thinking to Study the Ottoman Empire?
If you've ever played *Civilization VI* or *Europa Universalis IV*, you've almost certainly encountered a faction that starts on the small Anatolian peninsula in Asia Minor, then within a few turns spans Europe, Asia, and Africa, incorporates the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa into its territory, and even beats Christian European powers into submission, only beginning to decline in the 17th century. That faction is the Ottoman Empire — often called the Ottoman Turks in common parlance, named after its founder Osman I, whose flag's crescent and star were later inherited by the Republic of Turkey and remain the core of Turkey's national flag today.
But for most teenagers, impressions of the Ottoman Empire are stuck in the stereotypical label of "ancient, distant, and irrelevant to me": it is the "Sick Man of West Asia" in textbooks, the backdrop of *One Thousand and One Nights*, the "backward empire" tied to the Middle Ages, and many people even confuse the Ottoman Empire with the Arab Empire, completely unaware that this regime that existed for more than 600 years is actually closely related to your current life: the coffee you drink every day was first brought to Europe by the Ottomans from Yemen; the organ you use now was first improved by Ottoman engineers; even the "ambassador immunity system" in today's international law, the prototype was established when the Ottomans dealt with European countries; and the word "quarantine" we use now, was first used by the Ottomans to prevent the plague, requiring all incoming ships to be isolated for 40 days (the Italian word quaranta giorni means "40 days"). It is not distant at all, but hidden in many everyday details you take for granted.
So why use systems thinking to study the Ottoman Empire? Because if you use the traditional "hero view of history" or "event view of history", you will only see a bunch of scattered wars, sultans, and treaties, and you will not be able to understand why this empire could rule Europe, Asia and Africa at the same time, manage dozens of different ethnic and religious groups, and maintain for 600 years without collapsing — 5 times longer than the Mongol Empire that spanned Europe and Asia, and 300 years longer than the Han Dynasty, the longest dynasty in Chinese history. When you play strategy games, you don't just focus on one type of soldier or one city, but you look at the three core modules of "military, economy, and population" at the same time. If any one of the modules collapses, your empire will perish quickly. The real Ottoman Empire was the most successful "strategy game player" in the world at that time, and its system architecture design was even more advanced than the governance logic of many modern countries.
What is "systems thinking"? First take your school as an example
Before talking about the Ottoman Empire, let's first give a definition of "systems thinking" that you can understand: Systems thinking is not about memorizing historical dates, but about treating any complex organization (such as an empire, a company, a school, or a game guild) as a "running machine", breaking it down into different parts, seeing how each part works with the others, which part breaking down would crash the whole machine, and which part upgrading would make the machine run faster.
For example, if your school is going to hold a sports meeting, if you analyze it with systems thinking, it has three core modules: 1. Military expansion module (analogy): That is the competitive strength of each class, whether they can get good results and represent the honor of the school, just like the military expansion of an empire, grabbing territory and winning battles to prove its strength. 2. Fiscal balance module (analogy): That is the funding, supplies and logistics support of the sports meeting, whether there is enough money to buy prizes, rent venues, and invite referees, just like the fiscal revenue of an empire, whether it can support the army and construction. 3. Multi-ethnic integration module (analogy): That is how to make students from different classes and different personalities willing to participate, so that there will be no collective boycott of a certain class, or conflicts between students that ruin the sports meeting, just like how the empire makes people of different ethnicities and religions not rebel and are willing to obey the rule.
If the sports meeting only focuses on "winning awards" (only developing the military module), and does not care about whether there is enough money or whether students are willing to participate, it will definitely be messed up in the end: either there is no money to rent the venue, or no one signs up, and even if they win awards, no one will be willing to hold it next time. The Ottoman Empire was the only "sports meeting organizer" in the world at that time that balanced these three modules very well, so it could last for 600 years.
Two core tools of systems thinking
To master systems thinking, you only need to learn two tools to analyze almost all complex organizations:
1. Module decomposition method: break complex problems into small parts
Just like when you repair your phone, you won't throw away the whole phone, but will disassemble it into screen, battery, motherboard and repair them one by one. When analyzing the Ottoman Empire, we will also disassemble it into three core modules, and each module will be disassembled into smaller parts:
- **Military expansion module**: disassembled into troop types (cavalry, infantry, navy), equipment (cannons, warships), logistics (grain, military pay), and command system (sultan, pasha, bey)
- **Fiscal balance module**: disassembled into tax sources (agricultural tax, commercial tax, tariff), expenditure structure (military expenditure, administrative expenditure, religious expenditure), reserve mechanism (granary, treasury), and lending system (borrowing from Jewish merchants and European banks)
- **Multi-ethnic integration module**: disassembled into religious policy (millet system), local governance (bey local decentralization), identity (Ottomanism), and legal system (combination of Sharia law and Roman law)
