Chapter 1: Prologue — Stargazers in the Rainforest
---
Close your eyes and imagine yourself standing on the Yucatán Peninsula over a thousand years ago. Around you stretches a dense tropical rainforest, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and exotic flowers. Towering kapok trees and mahogany block out the sky, a jaguar growls in the distance, and macaws' calls pierce through the layered green canopy above.
Night falls slowly.
Suddenly, the sky ignites—millions of stars like diamonds scattered across a deep blue canvas, the Milky Way a shimmering river cutting across the heavens. You've never witnessed such a magnificent night sky, because in your city—if you could call your home that—burning pine torches and oil lamps cannot compare to this boundless cosmic radiance.
You look up and see Sirius rising in the east, Venus shining as the Morning Star in the final darkness before dawn. You know that in a few days, Venus's position will change; you know the rainy season will arrive on a certain day; you know tonight a particular star will align perfectly with the top of a certain temple—this is no coincidence, but the result of careful calculations spanning hundreds of years by you and your people.
This is the Maya. This is their world—a civilization covered by dense rainforest, illuminated by stars, in constant dialogue with the cosmos.
And the book in your hands is going to take you back to that world.
An Invitation Through Time: Why Learn About the Maya
You might ask: Why should we spend time learning about an ancient civilization that has long since disappeared in the 21st century?
That's an excellent question. And the answer might surprise you.
First, the legacy of the Maya hasn't truly "disappeared." Today, approximately six to seven million descendants of the Maya still live in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. They speak over thirty Maya languages and maintain many ancient traditions. If you encounter an elderly Maya person in traditional dress during a trip to Central America, he or she might tell you stories about the stars passed down from their great-great-grandfather.
More importantly, the Maya's achievements in astronomy and mathematics still astonish us today. They were one of the first civilizations in the world to develop the concept of "zero"—nearly a thousand years before Europeans. Their precise calculations of Venus's orbital period differ from modern astronomy by only one day every 552 years. Imagine: if you had a job where you only needed to check your work once every 552 years, you'd think it was pretty easy, right? But for Maya priests over a thousand years ago, this meant that without any telescopes or modern instruments, they mapped the laws of the universe using only their naked eyes and extraordinary patience.
There's another reason that might feel closer to home: the way the Maya loved the night sky isn't really that different from how you look up at the stars today. When you count stars while cooling off in the yard on a summer night, when you're amazed by Saturn's rings in a planetarium, when you make wishes during a meteor shower—you're doing essentially the same thing Maya priests did over a thousand years ago: trying to understand our place in the universe, asking ancient questions—Where did we come from? Where are we going? What do the stars above mean?
This is why we're beginning this journey. Not to worship a distant civilization, but to understand: human curiosity about the stars is a common language that transcends time and space.
The River of Time: The Long Scroll of Maya Civilization
To understand the Maya's obsession with the stars, we first need to understand who they were and in what historical river they lived.
Let's turn back the clock to around 2000 BCE.
At that time, Egyptians were building the Great Pyramid of Khufu, China was just entering the Xia Dynasty, and Sumerians in Mesopotamia were inventing the earliest cuneiform writing. On the other side of the Earth, in the tropical rainforests of Central America, a new civilization was quietly sprouting—the Olmec civilization.
The Olmec are considered the "mother culture" of Mesoamerican civilization. They built massive ceremonial centers, carved terrifying giant stone heads, and invented the earliest calendar systems in Central America. Although the Olmec civilization mysteriously collapsed around 400 BCE, their cultural legacy profoundly influenced all subsequent Mesoamerican civilizations—including the Maya.
The Preclassic Period: Maya Childhood
Around 1000 BCE, the Maya began establishing their homes in the jungles and highlands of Central America. Archaeologists call this period the "Preclassic Period" (approximately 1000 BCE to 250 CE).
The story of this period remained largely unknown for a long time because the Maya's most magnificent pyramids and finest carvings were built during the later Classic Period. However, archaeological discoveries in recent decades are changing this understanding. In the 2000s, archaeologists found Maya settlement sites dating from 1000 to 3500 BCE in the Ceibal region of Guatemala, including fragments of pottery and farming tools.
Imagine: while Confucius was teaching his students "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself" in China, a group of Maya in the Guatemalan highlands were learning how to plant corn, build thatched huts, and observe the stars to keep time. Their technological level may have been far behind contemporary China and Europe, but the questions they were pondering—What is time? What are the stars telling us?—were surprisingly similar.
One of the most important developments of the Preclassic Period was the birth of Maya writing. Although the earliest Maya writing dates to the 3rd century BCE, the complete writing system only matured during the Classic Period. The earliest Maya writing was primarily carved in stone, documenting the great achievements of rulers—"The great Sun Lord K'awi
