When we trace the arc of human civilization, we find that every major breakthrough in manufacturing technology has profoundly reshaped society. From the earliest stone tools to bronze casting, from iron forging to the steam engine, the evolution of manufacturing has always been a core driver of human progress. Today, in the 21st century, a technology called Additive Manufacturing (AM) is quietly transforming our understanding of "manufacturing"—this is 3D printing technology.
3D printing, also known as three-dimensional printing or rapid prototyping, is a manufacturing technology that constructs three-dimensional objects by depositing materials layer by layer. Unlike traditional manufacturing methods that remove excess material through cutting, grinding, or shaping to obtain the final product, 3D printing builds up materials progressively based on digital model data, ultimately stacking them into complete three-dimensional objects. This paradigm of "building from nothing" and "growing from less to more" represents a fundamental departure from thousands of years of manufacturing tradition.
Understanding the significance of 3D printing technology extends far beyond the technical dimension. This quiet revolution is redefining value chains, supply chains, and innovation models in manufacturing. It has made manufacturing complex geometries simpler than ever before, enabled mass production of personalized products, significantly improved material utilization rates, and reduced production waste. In aerospace, medical devices, automotive industry, consumer electronics, art design, and many other fields, 3D printing technology is demonstrating its unique value.
This book will guide readers through a systematic study of the core principles, key processes, and practical applications of 3D printing technology. We will particularly focus on two of the most popular desktop 3D printing technologies—Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA)—because these two technologies are not only widely adopted by individual enthusiasts, educational institutions, and small businesses, but their fundamental principles also provide an essential foundation for understanding other more advanced 3D printing technologies.
Every world-changing technology has its moment of birth. For 3D printing technology, that moment occurred in 1984. That year, American inventor Charles Hull submitted a patent application to the US Patent Office titled "System for Three-Dimensional Object Manufacturing by Photopolymerization with Ultraviolet Light," marking the official birth of Stereolithography (SLA). In 1986, Charles Hull received this patent (US Patent No. 4,575,330), and that same year he founded 3D Systems Corporation, a company that would later become an important pioneer and leader in the 3D printing industry.
The innovation of Charles Hull lay in his clever combination of optical technology and materials science. His system used a focused ultraviolet laser beam to scan a tank of liquid photopolymer resin along predetermined paths. Where the laser light touched, the resin underwent photopolymerization, transitioning from liquid to solid state. By precisely controlling the laser's scanning path and incrementally lowering the build platform, the digital model could be "photographically etched" into a physical object, layer by layer.
The significance of this invention was that it achieved the first direct "digital-to-physical" conversion. Before SLA technology emerged, if an engineer wanted to create a prototype part, it often took weeks and cost thousands—even tens of thousands—of dollars, requiring skilled craftsmen. SLA technology could produce geometrically complex product prototypes in hours to days at relatively low cost. This fundamentally changed product development processes, dramatically shortening the cycle from conceptual design to physical validation.
The development of 3D printing technology can be divided into several distinct phases, each accompanied by the emergence of new technologies and expansion of application areas.
First Phase: Rapid Prototyping Era (1984-1999)
In its first fifteen years, 3D printing technology was primarily positioned as a "Rapid Prototyping (RP)" tool. During this phase, SLA technology was the unchallenged leader, but other technologies began to emerge. In 1988, Scott Crump from the University of Texas at Austin invented Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and founded Stratasys Corporation the following year. In 1989, Carl Deckard and Joe Beaman at the University of Texas patented Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). In 1993, Ely Sachs and the MIT team invented Three-Dimensional Printing (3DP).
The market characteristic of this phase was high equipment prices (early SLA systems sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars), with applications concentrated in large enterprise R&D departments and professional service organizations. Ordinary consumers had almost no opportunity to access this technology.
2005年,Adrian Bowyer在英国 Bath 大学发起了一个革命性的开源项目——RepRap(Replicating Rapid-prototyper,可自我复制的快速原型机)。
Second Phase: Desktopization and Democratization (2000-2010)
Entering the 21st century, 3D printing technology ushered in a significant turning point. In 2005, Adrian Bowyer at the University of Bath in the UK launched a revolutionary open-source project—RepRap (Replicating Rapid-prototyper). The goal of the RepRap project was to develop a 3D printer capable of "printing" most of its own parts, thereby achieving self-replication. This project profoundly impacted the entire 3D printing industry landscape.
The core philosophy of the RepRap project was openness and sharing. All design drawings, soft
