What Makes a Game Fun? /
What Makes a Game Fun? /
The Question That Started Everything /
Think about the last time you played a game. Maybe it was a video game on your tablet, a board game with your family, or a simple game of tag with friends in the playground. As you were playing, something strange happened: time seemed to disappear. You were completely focused on what you were doing. You might have felt excited, frustrated, proud, or surprised—but most importantly, you were having *fun*.
Now ask yourself this: Why?
This question might seem simple, but it's actually one of the most important questions in game design. The people who create games—what we call *game designers*—spend their careers trying to answer it. They want to understand exactly what makes a player smile, what keeps someone coming back for "just one more game," and why some games become instant favorites while others gather dust on a shelf.
In this chapter, we're going to explore the science and art behind what makes games fun. You'll learn that "fun" isn't magic or luck—it's a system that can be understood, analyzed, and even recreated. By the end of this chapter, you'll have your own framework for understanding why any game you play feels the way it does.
The Five Pillars of Fun /
After decades of research and millions of games played, game designers have discovered that almost every fun experience in a game can be traced back to five basic elements. We call these the Five Pillars of Fun:
1. Challenge / 挑战 2. Reward / 奖励 3. Social / 社交 4. Creativity / 创造 5. Story / 故事
Let me explain what each one means and why it matters.
Challenge: The Spark of Engagement /
Imagine playing a game where you always win. Every time. No matter what you do, victory is guaranteed. How long would you stay interested? Probably not very long.
This is the first secret of fun: challenge matters. When we face something difficult but achievable, our brains light up with activity. We feel *engaged*—not bored, not overwhelmed, but alive and focused.
Challenge creates what psychologists call a "problem-solving state." Your brain loves puzzles. It enjoys the feeling of working through something difficult and finally figuring it out. That's why even simple games like tic-tac-toe can be fun for a while—you're always trying to outthink your opponent.
But here's the tricky part: challenge only feels fun when it's *just right*. Too easy, and you get bored. Too hard, and you get frustrated. Finding this "just right" zone is what game designers spend most of their time doing. It's called calibrating difficulty, and it's one of the most important skills in game design.
Think about it this way: when you climb a tree, the fun isn't at the bottom (where it's easy) or at the very top (where you might fall and get hurt). The fun is in the middle—where you can see progress, where each movement matters, and where you feel proud when you reach a new branch.
Reward: The Chemistry of Achievement /
Here's something happening inside your brain right now. When you accomplish something—even something small—your brain releases special chemicals called dopamine and endorphins. These chemicals make you feel good. Really good. They're your brain's way of saying "yes, that's great, do more of that!"
This is why rewards are so powerful in games. Every time you collect a coin, defeat an enemy, or level up your character, your brain rewards you with a little burst of happiness. This isn't cheating or manipulation—it's just how human brains work. Rewards are the way our brains acknowledge progress and encourage us to keep going.
Game designers use different types of rewards to create different feelings:
Immediate Rewards happen right away. You jump on a Koopa and get 100 points. You open a chest and find a new sword. These quick rewards keep you moving forward and give you constant feedback that you're doing well.
Long-term Rewards are bigger achievements that take more time. Defeating a boss, finishing a difficult level, or unlocking a new character are all long-term rewards. They give you something to work toward over days, weeks, or even months.
Unexpected Rewards (called "surprise and delight") are perhaps the most powerful. When you stumble upon a hidden area or get a rare item you weren't expecting, your brain's reward center goes into overdrive. This is why many games hide secrets—finding them creates moments of pure joy.
But—and this is important—rewards alone don't make a game fun. If a game just gave you rewards without any challenge, you'd get bored quickly. The magic happens when rewards and challenge work together. Each reward tells you "good job!" and motivates you to face the next challenge.
Social: The Power of Together /
Humans are social animals. We've evolved to find joy in connection, competition, and cooperation with others. This is why so many of the most popular games throughout human history—including games before computers even existed—involve other people.
When you play a game with others, something magical happens. Your brain doesn't just respond to the game itself—it responds to the people around you. Laughing with friends, celebrating a shared victory, or even the friendly trash-talking before a match all add layers of enjoyment that no solo game can match.
Game designers understand this deeply. That's why multiplayer games have become so popular. When you play with friends, you're not just having fun—you're building memories together. The game becomes a shared experience that connects you to other people.
There are different ways games create social fun:
Competition pits players against each other. Racing games, fighting games, and sports games use competition to create excitement. The thrill of trying to be the best, of outplaying your friends, of eking out a narrow victory—these are some of the most intense feelings games can create.
Cooperation brings players together toward a shared goal. In cooperative games, you win or lose
