Living in the Age of Waste
Living in the Age of Waste
Now imagine this scenario: In the morning, you wake up and reach for your phone to check the time, casually tossing last night's snack wrapper into the trash can. At breakfast, you peel off the straw wrapper from your milk carton, finish the milk, crush the empty carton, and place it in the recycling bin. On your way to school, you buy a bottled water from a convenience store, drink it, and toss the plastic bottle into a roadside garbage bin. This is just an ordinary morning, and you've already generated at least five pieces of waste without realizing it.
This is not alarmist rhetoric. According to statistics from the World Bank, the total amount of solid waste generated globally each year has exceeded 2 billion tons, and this figure continues to grow at an annual rate of approximately 3% to 4%. If we stacked all the waste produced in a single year into one-meter cubes, these cubes would circle the Earth's equator a full six times. In other words, each of us is a garbage producer, and we are living in an era surrounded by waste.
The Global Waste Map: A Truth We Cannot Ignore
When we talk about the waste problem, we must first understand just how significant this issue is. The global distribution of waste shows notable regional differences, which not only reflect imbalances in economic development levels but also reveal fundamental differences in deep-seated social structures and consumption patterns.
According to the World Bank's "What a Waste 2.0" report released in 2018, global solid waste production grew from approximately 1.3 billion tons in 2009 to approximately 2 billion tons in 2016, an increase of 53%. Although high-income countries account for only 16% of the global population, they produce 34% of the world's garbage. In contrast, South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, with 33% of the world's population, produce only 20% of global waste. This stark contrast reveals a thought-provoking fact: waste production is highly correlated with per capita consumption levels, and economic development models largely determine the scale of waste generation.
Let us use more specific data to illustrate this issue. North America produces approximately 2.7 kilograms of waste per person per day, ranking first globally; Europe produces approximately 1.5 kilograms per person per day; East Asia approximately 1.2 kilograms; while sub-Saharan Africa produces only approximately 0.6 kilograms per person per day. Behind these statistics lies a profound environmental justice issue: those regions that consume the most and generate the most waste often have the richest resources and strongest pollution control capabilities, while those who consume the least bear the brunt of cross-border waste transfer and environmental pollution.
Cities: The Main Battleground of Waste Production
If we focus our attention on cities, we find an even more severe reality: while approximately 55% of the global population lives in cities, urban areas produce more than 70% of the world's total waste volume. The challenges posed by this high concentration are unprecedented.
Tokyo, as one of the world's largest metropolitan areas, generates approximately 40,000 tons of domestic waste daily, reaching peaks of 50,000 tons. What does this number mean? It's equivalent to needing to process over 300 train cars of garbage every day. New York City produces approximately 14 million tons of garbage annually, and during summer peak periods, the New York City Department of Sanitation processes over 12,000 tons of garbage daily, requiring over 600 garbage trucks, more than 200 barges, and multiple landfills working in coordination.
In China, the urban garbage problem is equally alarming. According to statistics released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, in 2019, China's urban domestic waste collection and transportation volume reached 242 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.16%. Among the country's 661 cities, nearly 300 face the dilemma of being surrounded by garbage. Beijing generates approximately 25,000 tons of garbage daily, Shanghai approximately 28,000 tons, and Guangzhou approximately 26,000 tons. Behind these numbers are countless overloaded waste treatment facilities and the increasingly pressing environmental capacity limits.

Waste Composition: More Complex Than You Think
Having understood the total volume of waste, we need to further analyze what these wastes are composed of. The composition of waste directly determines the choice of treatment methods and the potential for resource recovery, while the waste composition in different regions shows significant variations due to differences in consumption patterns and living habits.
Globally, the main components of domestic waste can be summarized as follows: organic waste (kitchen waste, garden waste, etc.) has the highest proportion, accounting for approximately 44% of the total; plastics account for approximately 12%; paper and cardboard account for approximately 17%; metals account for approximately 5%; glass accounts for approximately 5%; textiles account for approximately 4%; rubber and leather account for approximately 2%; other materials account for approximately 11%. Behind these seemingly simple numbers lie complex environmental challenges.
Food Waste: The Neglected Giant
Among all waste components, food waste (also known as food scraps or wet waste) is the most easily overlooked yet has the greatest impact. The global annual food waste generation is approximately 1.3 billion tons, accounting for more than one-third of total solid waste. If not handled properly, this food waste causes a series of serious environmental problems.
