I am an ordinary plastic bottle, my transparent body bearing the words "Pure Life", once filled with mineral water from the mountains. But now, I lie on the edge of a city sidewalk, the scorching asphalt almost melting me. The boy who just finished drinking and threw me away—Zhe—has already walked far away without a second glance. This is the beginning of my story, and the common fate of billions of plastic bottles: the moment of "disposal", you think it's all over, but actually, my journey has just begun.
A sudden gust of wind gave me freedom, and also disaster. I rolled down the slope, clattering against the curb, and finally fell into a gap in an iron grate—the entrance to the urban drainage system. Darkness swallowed me instantly, accompanied by the smell of sewage, as I plunged into a concrete pipe. This is the city's "intestine", where countless "uninvited guests" like me are swept away every day: cigarette butts, plastic bags, food wrappers... We merge into a turbid current, rushing toward an unknown destination.
globally, humans purchase over one million plastic bottles per minute, and more than 90% of them end up as waste (Earth Day Network, 2021). In China, daily municipal solid waste generation exceeds 1 million tons, with plastic waste accounting for approximately 10-15% (National Bureau of Statistics of China, 2022).
The moment Zhe threw me away that afternoon, the sun was scorching. He had just come out of a convenience store, his throat parched. He twisted off the cap, tilted his head back to drain the last drop of water, and then—tossed me away. This action was so natural, so habitual, that he was completely unaware that this simple act of "disposal" was pushing me onto a journey that could last for centuries. Every discarded plastic bottle is a fraction of this staggering number.
A plastic bottle's "life" usually begins with petroleum. My body is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a synthetic polymer derived from crude oil. The production process consumes significant energy and water resources: manufacturing a 1-liter PET bottle requires about 2 liters of water and 0.05-0.1 liters of oil (Pacific Institute, 2017). Yet my "death" is exceedingly long—in the natural environment, it takes me over 400 years to fully degrade, and I never truly "disappear"; I just gradually break down into microplastics, continuing to pollute the environment indefinitely.
Zhe's casual toss sent me down one of three possible paths: being collected by a garbage truck and entering the formal waste management system; being washed by rainwater into rivers and eventually the ocean; or lingering in urban corners, slowly weathering. Globally, approximately 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year, equivalent to a dump truck of plastic being dumped into the sea every minute (Jambeck et al., 2015). And I was rushing toward one of those fates.
In the dark pipes, I drifted alongside all kinds of waste. When the rain intensified, sewage pumping stations started up, propelling us with powerful currents through the intricate sewer network. Designed originally for flood control and sewage disposal, urban drainage systems have become "highways" for plastic waste to enter water bodies. Research shows that urban rivers are one of the major sources of marine plastic pollution, with river-transported plastic accounting for 67-90% of global ocean plastic input (Lebreton et al., 2017).
After a few days, I was spat out from a small river estuary into a wide river. The water was turbid, floating with all kinds of waste: discarded foam boxes, worn-out slippers, sheets of plastic bags... I drifted along with them. By the riverbank, an old man was fishing. He pulled up his net, only to find several plastic bottles and wrappers tangled in the mesh. He sighed, picked off the trash, and threw it back to the shore—this was the third time today. "Twenty years ago, there were many fish here. Now, the fish are fewer, and the trash is more," he said. This scene is a microcosm of countless rivers.
Rivers are the link between land and sea, and also the "conveyor belts" of plastic pollution. The world's top ten rivers (mostly in Asia, including the Yangtze, Yellow, and Mekong) carry about 90% of global ocean plastic (Schmidt et al., 2017). These rivers flow through densely populated areas with weak waste management, carrying plastic debris directly to the sea. And I was drifting along the current, slowly moving toward that blue yet scarred ocean.
Finally, I entered the ocean. At first, the seawater was blue, sunlight piercing the surface, and I thought I had been reborn. But soon, I realized I was not the only "visitor". As far as the eye could see, the sea surface was littered with all kinds of plastics: bottles, bags, fishing nets... They gathered together, forming what is known as "garbage patches". The Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone covers an area of over 1.6 million square kilometers, equivalent to three times the size of France (The Ocean Cleanup, 2021). There, plastic concentration far exceeds that of plankton.
Marine life becomes the direct victim of plastic pollution. Sea turtles mistake floating plastic bags for jellyfish and swallow them, causing intestinal blockages and death; albatross parents fly thousands of miles to forage for their chicks, only to bring back plastic fragments, and the chicks starve with stomachs full of plastic; whales strand themselves, and autopsies reveal hundreds of plastic bags in their stomachs. These tragedies occur every day. And I, an ordinary plastic bottle, might be chewed by a turtle, ingested by fish, eventually entering the food chain, and even returning to human plates.
(Leslie et
