The city, as the most complex spatial vessel of human civilization, is not a random geometric accumulation but rather a material expression shaped by historical accumulation, economic forces, social transformation, and cultural identity. When we stand on the Bund in Shanghai gazing toward the Lujiazui skyline, or wander through the historic blocks of Hongkou and Zhabei, what we perceive is not merely an arrangement of buildings but a spatial chronicle written in brick, steel, and concrete. The deep structure of this chronicle—the urban fabric—constitutes the key entry point for understanding the mechanisms of urban spatial formation and the logic of urban evolution.
With the title "Reconstructing Boundaries," this book examines how financial capital, shipping infrastructure, and architectural typological evolution jointly shaped the fabric generation and transformation of Shanghai as a semi-colonial city. The choice of "Reconstructing Boundaries" reflects Shanghai's distinctive "interface" characteristics: the institutional boundaries between foreign concessions and Chinese jurisdictions, the functional boundaries of the Huangpu River as the axis of urban development, the collision and integration of Chinese and Western architectural languages in space, and the superposition of traditional Jiangnan water networks with modern municipal infrastructure. The existence and dissolution of these boundaries constitute the most unique imprint of Shanghai's urban fabric. This book's core theoretical concern lies in revealing how these "constructed boundaries" were built, maintained, and reconstructed, and how they in turn shaped Shanghai's spatial structure and social fabric.
In academic discourse, urban fabric, as a core concept in urban morphology, has evolved from a descriptive term to a theoretical analytical tool. In everyday language, "fabric" originates from textile craftsmanship, referring to the surface texture of cloth, metaphorically suggesting the visual and spatial texture formed by the orderly arrangement of buildings and open spaces in urban environments. In professional literature, urban fabric typically refers to the overall spatial pattern and its intrinsic organizational logic comprising elements such as individual buildings, street networks, public spaces, and plot divisions within the urban physical environment.
Joseph Schware, the German urban morphologist, defined urban fabric from an architectural perspective as "the proportional relationships and organizational methods between built solids and spatial voids," emphasizing the geometric relationships and spatial rhythms among physical elements. Michael Conzen, the British geographer, approached urban fabric from a historical-geographical perspective, understanding it as "the deposition of time in space." Conzen argued that urban fabric is the result of superimposed effects from different historical periods of land-use patterns, architectural typologies, and street structures, with each period's fabric characteristics bearing specific socio-economic information. Although these definitions emphasize different aspects, they all point to a core understanding: urban fabric is not a static spatial form but rather the condensation of dynamic historical processes in physical space.
Drawing upon these theoretical resources, this book defines urban fabric as: the systematic organizational structure and evolutionary process of physical elements including building entities, plot forms, street networks, and open spaces in urban space under specific historical conditions. This definition encompasses three key analytical dimensions. The first is the physical form dimension, which focuses on building volume, height, typology, and materials; plot shape, scale, and boundary forms; street alignment, width, and cross-sectional characteristics; as well as spatial relationships and proportional rhythms among them. The second is the processual evolution dimension, emphasizing that urban fabric is not a static structure generated from nothing but rather an ever-changing result through mechanisms of construction, demolition, modification, and superimposition in a continuous temporal sequence, requiring understanding its formation logic from a historical developmental perspective. The third is the socio-economic dimension, recognizing the deeper driving forces behind physical spatial forms—how land systems, capital flows, social stratification, and cultural identity influence the selective development and protective forgetting of urban fabric.
Research on Shanghai's urban fabric must proceed simultaneously across these three dimensions. First, Shanghai's physical spatial forms exhibit high diversity and complexity—from the continuous colonnades of neoclassicism on the Bund to the dense blocks of lilong housing, from the eclectic architectural ensembles of the Jewish refugee quarter in Hongkou to the traditional Jiangnan gardens around Yu Garden, each fabric type carries unique spatial aesthetics and technological systems. Second, the formation process of Shanghai's urban fabric spans nearly two centuries from its opening as a treaty port in 1843 to the present, encompassing the establishment and expansion of foreign concessions, the modernization of Chinese-administered areas, the special development during the two World Wars, socialist transformation after 1949, redevelopment during reform and opening-up, and historic preservation movements in the 21st century, exhibiting clear阶段性 and disjunctive characteristics. Finally, the formation of Shanghai's urban fabric has always been closely linked to financial capital operations, shipping trade development, and spatial struggles between Chinese and foreign social forces; changes in physical form often serve as spatial expressions of socio-economic transformation.

Conzen
Urban morphology, as a systematic academic research field, primarily took institutional form in early 20th-century Europe. Among various theoretical schools, the Conzen School, named after British geographer Michael Conzen, represents one of the most methodologically self-conscious and empirically deep traditions in urban morphological
