Welcome to the Quantum World
Welcome to the Quantum World
---
Have you ever wondered how the magical things happen when you play games on your phone, video chat with friends, or ask a smart speaker to play your favorite song?
Let's think about these pictures together—
The phone in your hand looks ordinary—just a thin piece of glass and metal. But when it "wakes up," it can do so many things for you: take photos, navigate, play games, look up information... It's like a little magic box in your pocket!
What about the computer at home? When you open it, you can draw pictures, write articles, do calculations, and even have face-to-face conversations with grandparents who live far away. Close your eyes and think: what would our lives be like without computers and phones?
The Meeting of Xiao Q and A-Cong
In this story, I'm going to introduce you to two very special friends.
The first friend is called Xiao Q—you can also call it the "Little Q Sprite." Xiao Q is a little creature from a faraway quantum world. Its body is pale blue and semi-transparent, looking like a small clump of glowing, floating jelly. When it's happy, the light on its body sparkles like stars in the sky. When it's thinking seriously, a bright little light bulb even appears above its head!
What makes Xiao Q special is that it can do things that ordinary friends can't—like appearing in many places at the same time, or passing through "walls" without the walls even knowing! Doesn't that sound amazing? These are the magical powers of the quantum world.
The second friend is A-Cong—a regular little boy from our human world, about your age. A-Cong wears round glasses and looks like a little professor. His favorite thing is asking "Why?"—Why is the sky blue? Why do apples fall down instead of flying up? Why does my phone know what game I want to play?
One night, while A-Cong was reading a book about future technology, suddenly—a faint blue light floated out from the computer screen!
"Wow!" A-Cong was so surprised he almost dropped his book.
The blue light slowly grew bigger and brighter, until it became a tiny figure—this was Xiao Q!
"Hello there!" Xiao Q waved its little hand and said with sparkling eyes, "My name is Xiao Q. I come from a magical place called the Quantum World. I heard there are lots of fun things in your human world, and I wanted to visit and look around. Could you show me around?"
A-Cong pushed up his glasses and wasn't afraid at all—he had been dreaming of meeting friends from other worlds! "Of course!" he said excitedly, "My name is A-Cong. From today on, we're friends!"
And so, the wonderful adventure of Xiao Q and A-Cong began!
What is Quantum?
Now you're probably wondering: What does "quantum" actually mean? Why did Xiao Q say it comes from the "Quantum World"?
Let's rewind time for a moment, back to a long, long time ago—before you were born, before your parents were born. Back then, humans didn't know what quantum was, didn't know what atoms were. Everything that's ordinary to us now was an unknown mystery back then.
Later, clever scientists discovered something magical: everything in the world—you, the pencil on your desk, the leaves outside your window, even the air—is made up of extremely tiny "building blocks." How small are these building blocks? So small that even regular microscopes can't see them clearly!
These tiny "building blocks" have a name: they're called atoms.
The structure of an atom is quite interesting. Imagine our solar system—the Sun is in the center, and planets like Earth and Mars orbit around it. Atoms are similar: there's a "nucleus" in the center (like the Sun), and even smaller "electrons" (like tiny planets) spinning rapidly around it.
Atom: The smallest building block of everything in the world, and the basic unit that maintains an element's properties. Atoms are amazingly small—about one hundred-thousandth the diameter of a human hair!
Okay, now let's learn an even more interesting concept: Quantum.
The word "quantum" sounds complicated, but it's actually not hard to understand at all!
Imagine you have a pile of building blocks and want to divide them into small portions. You'll find that the smallest portion that can't be divided further is just one building block itself.
Quantum is like "one portion" of the physical world. It's the smallest possible "piece" that energy, light, and matter can exist in. Just like you can't build a house with half a building block, quantum is the smallest unit in the physical world that can't be divided further.
Quantum: Comes from the Latin word "quantus," meaning "how much." In physics, a quantum is the smallest unit that a physical quantity (such as energy, angular momentum, charge, etc.) can exist in. Quantum not only means "a small portion" but also represents an entirely new physical world!
The Magical Rules of the Quantum World
Xiao Q told A-Cong that although it came from the quantum world, the rules there are very different from our world.
In A-Cong's world, everything is very "normal":
- 📍 **Where things are, they are**: Your school bag is on the chair. It's on the chair. It can't also be on the bed at the same time.
- 🌊 **What you see, you can touch**: A wall is in front of you. You can see it, and you can touch it.
- 🏃 **Speeds vary, but each is "one speed"**: Walking is one speed, running is another, a car is different. No matter what, at any moment you can only hav
