Chapter 1: The Spotlight of the Heart

Xiao Xing sat in the third seat by the window in the classroom, which was his favorite spot—not because he could see the blackboard well from there, but because through the window, he could watch the little birds on the playground, see the big tree swaying in the wind at the edge of the field, and spot the clouds drifting across the sky... In short, he was willing to look at anything except what the teacher was teaching.
At this moment, Math Teacher Wang was standing at the podium explaining something. Her voice was like a gently flowing stream, winding its way through the classroom. When Teacher Wang reached the third time she was explaining a problem, she noticed that Xiao Xing's gaze had drifted toward the window—his little head was tilted slightly, and there was even a hint of a smile on his face, as if he was experiencing some wonderful adventure that only he knew about.
"Xiao Xing, Xiao Xing?" Teacher Wang raised her voice. "Comrade Xiao Xing?"
No response. Xiao Xing's eyes were still fixed on the window, where two sparrows were chirping and chatting on a tree branch. He thought they were having such a happy conversation.
"Xiao Xing!" Teacher Wang practically shouted this time.
Xiao Mei in the back row gently poked Xiao Xing's back. Only then did Xiao Xing snap back to reality, as if he had been suddenly pulled back from somewhere very far away. His face immediately turned red, and he felt as if all his classmates' eyes were shining like little light bulbs, all staring at him.
"Tea... Teacher Wang," Xiao Xing stammered as he stood up, "I'm... I'm here."
Teacher Wang sighed and said gently, "Xiao Xing, which problem was the teacher just explaining?"
Xiao Xing lowered his head, his voice as small as a mosquito's buzz: "The... the seventh problem?"
"The teacher was explaining the ninth problem," Teacher Wang said. "Come to the office after class, okay?"
"Okay..." Xiao Xing sat back down, feeling his face was so hot it could fry an egg. He glanced at Xiao Mei, who gave him a sympathetic smile.
This day felt especially long for Xiao Xing. When the bell rang for the last class, he thought that bell sound was the most beautiful thing he'd ever heard—he could finally leave this place that made him feel so embarrassed.

After school, Xiao Xing shouldered his somewhat worn backpack and slowly walked out of the school gate. His steps were as heavy as if filled with lead, requiring great effort with every move. It wasn't because his schoolbag was too heavy—it was because his heart was carrying a big stone.
That stone was Teacher Wang's words.
"Xiao Xing, you've been called to the office three times this semester," Teacher Wang had said before he left. "You're a very smart child, and the teacher believes you can do it. It's just that... your mind always seems to be drifting somewhere else."
Mind drifting somewhere else—Xiao Xing thought Teacher Wang had really hit the nail on the head. He felt like a kite, blowing away with every gust of wind, impossible to catch. Sometimes he really wanted to know why other people could listen carefully through an entire class, while he always lost his way halfway?
He walked along with his head down, kicking the little stones by the roadside, one after another. Those little stones were kicked by him, rolling this way and that—some rolling into the grass, some rolling into the gutter.
"Sigh..." Xiao Xing heaved a heavy sigh. "If only I could be like Xiao Mei. When Xiao Mei is in class, her eyes seem to be stuck on the teacher, never zoning out."
He continued walking forward, and before he knew it, he had arrived at the park. This park was Xiao Xing's favorite place—not because there was anything particularly fun there, but because there was an old marble bench there. That bench was tucked away in a corner of the park, sheltered by a giant old pagoda tree. Under the shade of the tree, it was always pleasantly cool.
Xiao Xing sat down on that bench, placed his schoolbag beside him, and looked up at the dense canopy of leaves above his head. Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, scattering dappled spots of light on his body, like a moving painting.
"If I were a bird, that would be good," Xiao Xing murmured to himself. "Birds don't have to go to class, don't have to listen to lectures, can fly around all day long, look at whatever they want to look at..."
---
---
Just as Xiao Xing was about to drift off to sleep, a voice suddenly rang out—
"Hello there, little friend!"
Xiao Xing's eyes flew open, and he almost fell off the bench. He looked around, but the park was empty, not a single person in sight.
"Who... who's there?" Xiao Xing's voice trembled a bit. He thought of the ghost stories his mother had told him, and he was a bit afraid.
"Look down, look down!" The voice sounded again, this time with a hint of impatience. "I'm at your feet!"
Xiao Xing carefully lowered his head, and what he saw startled him—
A cat! A cat wearing a little blue cape and golden glasses was looking up at him. This cat was completely white, not a single hair out of place, and its eyes were a rare gold-green color, now sparkling with a strange light.
"You... you can talk?" Xiao Xing's eyes went wide, his mouth opening so wide you could have stuffed an egg into it.
"Of course," the cat proudly flicked its tail. "I'm Focus Cat, and I specialize in helping children like you who have trouble focusing. I've been waiting for you all day today, and I finally caught you!"
"Waiting for me?" Xiao Xing was even more confused. "How did you know I would come here?"
Focus Cat squinted its eyes and smiled, a mysterious flavor in that smile: "I know lots of things. For example, I know you zoned out in math class today and it took Teacher Wang calling your name three times to get your attention. Also, you were just thinking that it would be nice if you were a bird, so you wouldn't have to go to class and could look at whatever you wanted. Am I right?"
Xiao Xing was so surprised he almost jumped off the bench. "How... how did you know that?"
---
