Have you ever had a travel experience like this? On a group tour to Xi’an, you were woken up at 6 a.m. by the tour guide rushing you to scenic spots, given only 40 minutes to visit the Terracotta Army, with the guide waving a small flag and urging you to “hurry up and take photos, next stop is the jade exhibition”. You got 200 likes on your nine-grid social media post, but you can’t even remember whether the Terracotta Army is from the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor or the Han Dynasty.
A lot of people will tell you: “Travel planning is adults’ business, you just need to follow along.” But if you really think that way, you might miss the most valuable part of travel—the joy of being completely in control, discovering unexpected surprises, and the growth opportunities hidden in the itinerary.
The source of this misconception is actually very simple: Most parents and teachers assume that teens “lack experience, can’t handle money, and are prone to danger”, so they automatically take travel planning rights away from teens. But this assumption ignores a fact: Contemporary teens’ familiarity with internet tools, sensitivity to novel experiences, and desire for control over free time are actually stronger than many adults’. There are more than a thousand vlogs of teen solo travel on YouTube, and the topic of “teen travel guide” on Xiaohongshu has more than 230 million views. Even Ctrip’s research shows that 62% of travel users under 18 actively participate in itinerary planning instead of passively accepting arrangements.
Last summer, 14-year-old Shanghai girl Lin Xiaoxia broke this prejudice with her own experience. She originally planned to go on a 3-day group tour to Quanzhou with her parents, but her parents had to work overtime and couldn’t go. She simply looked up information, made a guide, and booked the itinerary herself. In the end, she not only visited popular attractions like Kaiyuan Temple and West Street, but also experienced the Chuanpu women’s hairpin wrapping intangible cultural heritage project with a local aunt, found a noodle soup shop that had been open for 20 years in an old alley in the old city, and even lived in an old house with a courtyard after bargaining with the owner for 20 yuan when her homestay was temporarily canceled. The owner also taught her to make her own hairpins. Her travel diary was later published in *Teenager’s World* and reposted by the official account of Quanzhou Cultural Tourism Bureau. Many netizens commented: “She played more thoroughly than me, a local.”
Lin Xiaoxia’s experience is not an isolated case. The 2023 annual report of the American Teen Travel Association shows that teens who have experienced self-planned travel have 47% higher self-awareness than teens who have only participated in group tours, and 38% higher decision-making ability when facing choices. The 2024 survey data of the China Youth Research Center also confirms this: Among 12-18-year-old teens, 78% have experienced group tours, but only 12% of teens are “very satisfied” with the group tour experience, while the travel satisfaction of teens who have planned their own trips is as high as 89%. More importantly, the ability of teens who plan their own trips to deal with emergencies (such as train delays, sudden weather changes, and temporary closure of attractions) during travel is 62% higher than that of teens who take group tours—because all problems are solved by adults during group tours, they just need to follow along, while the process of self-planning is itself a practical training of “predicting problems-preparing solutions-solving problems” again and again.
Why do adults always think you “can’t plan”?
To break the misconception that “travel planning is adults’ business”, we first need to understand how this cognition is formed. Most parents’ concerns can be summarized into three points: First, they think teens lack social experience and are easy to be cheated; second, they think teens can’t handle money and are easy to overspend; third, they think teens lack safety awareness and are prone to danger.
But is this really the case? Let’s look at the first concern first: “Easy to be cheated”. Contemporary teens have been exposed to the internet since childhood, and their ability to identify information is actually stronger than many adults. For example, if you want to book a flight, you can open Ctrip, Fliggy and other platforms to compare prices, look at the photos in the comments, and see if it is an official flagship store. These operations are more proficient for many teens than adults. Last year, 16-year-old Shenzhen boy Chen Mo planned a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand by himself. When booking flights, he compared prices on 5 platforms, and finally saved 1,200 yuan compared with the group tour flight of the travel agency, and also avoided the “shopping group” trap of the travel agency. As for the second concern: “Can’t handle money”. Isn’t teens’ math ability better than adults’? You are more careful than anyone when calculating coupons for buying figurines and milk tea, and calculating travel budgets is no problem at all. Chen Mo took a total of 8,000 yuan to Chiang Mai, 2,500 yuan for round-trip flights, 1,200 yuan for 6 nights of accommodation, and the remaining 4,300 yuan for meals, tickets and shopping. He bought all the tickets online in advance, which was 30% cheaper than buying on-site, and ate at local roadside stalls, which was half cheaper than the hotel. In the end, he not only did not overspend, but also bought souvenirs for his classmates. As for the third concern: “Prone to danger”, in fact, teens who plan their own trips have stronger safety awareness and risk prediction ability than those who take group tours—because you have to check the location
