The First Day of the Global Village
---
The morning sunlight gently streamed through the curtains, landing softly on my little bed. I opened my eyes—this was a special day. I was going to school! To be honest, I felt both excited and nervous. Excited because I would finally get to meet many new friends, and nervous because I didn't know how many kids would be in my class or whether they would like me.
Mom held my little hand as we walked toward school. Along the streets were big trees, pretty flowers, and many busy pedestrians. Mom's steps were steady, and following her pace made me feel especially safe.
"Mom, how many kids will there be in my class?" I asked, looking up at her.
Mom smiled, squatted down, and looked at me seriously. "Sweetheart, do you know what? You're now part of a super big family. This family is called the Global Village, and it has 7.2 billion people in it!"
7.2 billion? My eyes widened. That's so many people! I started counting on my fingers, but they weren't nearly enough. Mom laughed at my clumsy attempt and said, "Don't try to count. Let me tell you something. Imagine if you counted one number per second, without eating, drinking, or sleeping, you would need to count for a full 228 years to reach 7.2 billion!"
"Wow!" I covered my mouth. "You'd have to start counting from so long ago and keep going until now!"
Mom nodded and said, "Yes, 7.2 billion is really a huge number. But you know what? Even though there are so many of us, every single person is a unique member of this big family. Just like how there are 30 kids in your class, and each one is special, everyone in our Global Village has their own unique smile and their own unique story."
I nodded thoughtfully. So we're all one big family!
Our Class, a Miniature of the World
The moment I walked into the classroom, I was amazed by what I saw. The room was filled with children—some with yellow skin, some with black skin, some with white skin, and some with brown skin. Each child had different eye colors—black, brown, blue, green—like sparkling gems. Their hair was also varied—straight black hair, curly brown hair, golden curly hair, even red wavy hair.
"Wow, look, that kid's hair looks like cotton candy!" I couldn't help but exclaim.
Everyone laughed. The child with cotton candy hair laughed too, his smile especially bright, showing a row of white teeth. Later I learned that his name was Xiao Ming, and he was a new classmate from Africa.
Our homeroom teacher, Ms. Li, walked into the classroom. She was a woman with glasses and a warm smile. She clapped her hands, signaling for everyone to quiet down.
"Welcome to Class One, Grade One!" said Ms. Li. "From today onward, you're a big family. Do you know what? Your 30 children are like a miniature of the entire world."
We looked at each other, not quite understanding what the teacher meant.
Ms. Li smiled and said, "Look, our class has children from different places—some from China, some from the United States, some from Africa, some from Europe. The whole world is like this too. 7.2 billion people live on seven continents. Each continent has its own unique appearance, just like how everyone in our class is unique."
Ms. Li took out a large colorful map and put it up on the blackboard. The map was colorful, looking like a big jigsaw puzzle.
"Look, this is our Earth!" said Ms. Li. "There are seven continents on Earth—Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Oceania, and Antarctica. We have 30 kids in our class. If we divide 7.2 billion people equally among seven continents, each continent would have about one billion people!"
I quietly calculated in my head—one hundred million is ten thousand ten thousands, so one billion is one hundred thousand ten thousands. That's really a lot!
Friends from the Seven Continents
Ms. Li asked everyone to stand up and introduce themselves, saying where they were from. When it was my turn, I shyly said, "M-my name is Xiao Hua, and I'm from China."
"Which continent is China in?" asked Ms. Li.
"Asia!" I thought for a moment, then answered.
"Very good!" said Ms. Li. "Asia is the largest continent in the world, home to about 4.6 billion people—almost more than half of the world's population!"
Next was our cotton candy-haired friend, Xiao Ming. He stood up and said in imperfect but very determined Chinese, "M-my name is Xiao Ming, and I'm from Kenya, Africa. My mom and dad are wildlife conservationists. My favorite animals are elephants and giraffes!"
"Wow!" we all exclaimed. Africa! I'd heard about that place—it had lions, zebras, and endless grasslands.
"Africa is a magical continent," said Ms. Li. "It has the hottest desert in the world—the Sahara Desert—and also the largest wildlife reserve. And Africa is the birthplace of humanity. All of our ancestors originally came from Africa!"
I gasped in surprise. So our ancestral home is all Africa!
Lily, a little girl from the United States, stood up and said, "I'm from New York City, USA, in North America. New York is a very bustling city with lots of very tall buildings, and the Statue of Liberty!"
"I'm from the United Kingdom, in Europe," said a blonde, blue-eyed boy. "The UK has many ancient castles and museums."
"I'm from Australia, in Oceania!" said an enthusiastic little girl with slightly dark skin. "Australia has adorable kangaroos and koalas, and the beautiful Great Barrier Reef!"
"I'm from Brazil, in South America!" said a particularly cheerful boy. "Brazil has the biggest soccer stadium in the world and the Amazon rainforest!"
Ms. Li said, "Antarctica is the only continent without permanent residents—only penguins and researchers live there. But it has beautiful glaciers and auroras. When you grow up, you can go visit!"
After hearing everyone's introductions, I suddenly felt that the world was so big and so amazing. Even though we lived in different places, spoke different l
