Chapter One: The First Lesson — A Dialogue with Home

It was a snowy winter in Beijing, thirty years ago. A young man in his early twenties rode an old-fashioned Phoenix bicycle, a canvas tool bag slung over the handlebars and half a roll of PTFE tape plus a freshly repaired multimeter resting in the basket. His name was Chen Shouye — later, the neighbors in that alley would all call him "Old Chen," but that year, he was still just an apprentice who had just completed his training. His master had said, "Go to Grandpa Zhang's place at Dongsi Santiao. His kettle is leaking." So he went.
Grandpa Zhang lived in a room of less than twenty square meters, with a clay kang (traditional heated bed), a coal stove, and a yellowed calendar hanging on the wall. When Chen Shouye walked in, he saw the old man using an enamel basin to catch the water leaking from the bottom of his kettle. It was an old-fashioned aluminum kettle, and at the rivets on the bottom there was a thin water line — like a silver needle — and water slowly crept down along this line, drip, drip, every drop falling into the enamel basin with a crisp echo.
Chen Shouye crouched down, looked for a while, and asked: "Grandpa, how long has this kettle been leaking?"
The old man said: "Three years."
Chen Shouye was stunned, and asked again: "Then why don't you get a new one?"
Grandpa Zhang looked at him and said slowly: "This kettle was brought by my late wife from her parents' home. She passed away twelve years ago. The only way I know she's still here is by listening to this sound."
At that moment, twenty-year-old Chen Shouye, standing beside the clay kang in that small room, suddenly understood something — repair is never about turning a broken thing back to what it was; repair is a dialogue with a home that has its own story. He did not replace the kettle, nor did he fix the rivets — because if that kettle stopped leaking, Grandpa Zhang would never hear that one-drop-every-seven-seconds sound again. He simply helped the old man move the enamel basin to a more stable position, and placed a soft cloth underneath the basin, so that the sound of the dripping water would become a little softer.
This is the story that Old Chen later told me. When he told this story, he had already become one of the most trusted repairmen in Beijing. The children in the alley called him "Grandpa Chen," and he himself had become the white-haired "Old Chen." He said that from that leaking kettle onward, it took him thirty years to truly understand the full weight of those two Chinese characters: *weixiu* (维修, repair).

Why We Need to Learn Repair: The Triple Logic of Economics, Psychology, and Environmentalism
Before we turn the first screw, we must answer a question: In an era where everything can be ordered online and delivered within hours, why should we still learn to repair?
This is not a nostalgic question, nor a sentimental one. It is a question about cost, meaning, and responsibility. Let me answer it in three dimensions.
1.1 The Economic Account: An Invisible "Laziness Tax"
Let me first tell you one of Old Chen's cases.
Last summer, a Ms. Li in Haidian District found Old Chen and said the faucet in her bathroom couldn't be turned off tightly and was always dripping. She said: "This faucet was installed during the renovation ten years ago. It's a big brand, it shouldn't break so easily, right?" Old Chen went to the scene and saw that it was a foreign-brand ceramic cartridge faucet, with the drip coming from the bottom of the cartridge. The faucet had cost 1,800 yuan ten years ago, and a replacement of the same model now costs about 2,400 yuan.
"It's not the faucet that's broken," Old Chen said. "It's the sealing ring inside the cartridge that's aged. The cartridge is the heart of the whole faucet, but actually it can be replaced individually. An original factory cartridge is 85 yuan. I'll replace it for you — twenty minutes."
Twenty minutes later, Ms. Li's faucet stopped dripping. The math works out like this: she had originally planned to spend 2,400 yuan on a complete faucet replacement (plus about 300 yuan in installation fees, totaling 2,700 yuan), but in the end spent only 85 yuan.
This is the economics of repair. A modern household owns, on average, 200 to 400 durable consumer goods (faucets, lights, switches, drawer slides, door hinges, rice cookers, washing machines…) that should last ten years. If 30% of them are completely discarded because of "minor problems," at an average unit price of 500 yuan, that's an expenditure of 30,000 to 60,000 yuan. We call this money the "laziness tax" — because we're too lazy to learn, too lazy to repair, too lazy to spend those twenty minutes, so we hand it over to others, to merchants, year after year.
Old Chen once calculated an even larger sum for me. A three-person family in Beijing, on average, spends between 4,000 and 8,000 yuan a year because of "being too lazy to repair" or "just replacing it if it can't be fixed." Five thousand yuan a year, over thirty years, comes to 150,000 yuan. That 150,000 yuan is enough for a down payment on a small apartment in many second-tier cities.
And what does it cost to learn repair? A screwdriver for 30 yuan, a multimeter for 80 yuan, a roll of PTFE tape for 5 yuan, a self-study manual on home electrical work for 40 yuan. For a total investment of less than 200 yuan, you can cut more than half of the 5,000 yuan "laziness tax" each year.
This is a leak in your pocket that you cannot see but is constantly flowing. This is the first lesson in the economics of repair.
1.2 The Psychological Account: Repair as an Exercise in "I Can Take Control"
But the economic account is not the most important reason. Let me tell you a second case from Old Chen.
Last winter, a 35-year-old programmer in Wangjing found Old Chen and said the bedroom door at his home wouldn't close properly, there was always wind blowing in, and it made him "feel uneasy in his heart." Old Chen went to th
