Chapter 1: I Am a Safety Hero

The morning sunlight quietly slipped through the curtains into Xiaoming's little room. Today was Monday, and Xiaoming rubbed his sleepy eyes and looked at the alarm clock on his bedside table—seven o'clock sharp. The little bell on the alarm clock rang "ding-a-ling," as if saying: "Wake up, wake up, a new day has begun!"
Xiaoming's room was filled with his favorite toys: Transformers, Ultraman, and the fluffy little bear that Mom gave him. Each toy lay quietly in its proper place, waiting for Xiaoming to wake up and play with them. On the wall hung a picture Xiaoming had drawn—a little boy wearing a Superman cape. That was Xiaoming's dream of himself—brave, strong, and able to protect everyone.
"Mom, I'm up!" Xiaoming jumped out of bed and shouted loudly.
Xiaoming was eight years old this year, in second grade at Guangming Primary School. He had a happy family: Dad was an engineer, Mom was a doctor, and Grandpa and Grandma lived in another neighborhood not far away. Every weekend, the whole family would get together for dinner. Xiaoming felt his life was absolutely perfect, just like the prince and princess in fairy tales—forever happy and blessed.
But Xiaoming didn't know that danger was actually lurking in every corner of our daily lives, always ready to cause trouble when we let our guard down. It might hide behind cars speeding on the road, lurk at the edge of an unfenced balcony, ambush itself behind a stranger's sweet smile, or lurk beside a steaming pot in the kitchen. Danger was like an invisible ghost, always ready to jump out and cause mischief when we weren't paying attention.
Today, let's follow Xiaoming on a wonderful journey as "Safety Heroes" together. We will learn how to discover dangers around us, how to protect ourselves and our families, and how to become real little heroes. Are you ready? Let's go!

What is Safety? What is Danger?
To become a Safety Hero, we must first understand two very important concepts: what is safety and what is danger. This is just like learning numbers before learning math—it's the most basic and important lesson.
Safety, simply put, is a state of being safe, with no injuries or threats. Imagine lying on a warm, comfortable bed, everything quiet and peaceful, sunshine beautiful outside the window, belly full, body strong, heart happy—that's the feeling of safety. Safety is the state where we don't have to be afraid or worried, where we can do what we want with peace of mind.
Danger refers to those things and situations that might cause us harm, make us sick, or scare us. For example, jumping from a high place might cause us to get hurt, touching an electrical outlet might give us an electric shock, eating spoiled food might give us a stomachache—these are all dangers. Danger is anything that might hurt us, changing us from a "safe" state to an "unsafe" one.
Let's do a little test to see which of the following situations Xiaoming encounters are safe and which are dangerous:
Situation 1: After school, Xiaoming is alone at home watching TV.
This seems quite safe, right? That's right—if you're alone at home following safety rules, not touching dangerous things, and not opening the door for strangers, it's relatively safe. But if Xiaoming fiddles with electrical appliances or climbs high to get something, it could become a dangerous situation.
Situation 2: Xiaoming goes swimming in a pool with his dad.
Swimming in a pool is great exercise, right? However, if Xiaoming goes into the water without adult supervision, that would be very dangerous. The poolside is wet, so running around carelessly could cause someone to slip and get hurt. So while swimming is a wonderful sport, we need to follow safety rules to stay safe.
Situation 3: When Xiaoming crosses the road, the light turns red, and he stops to wait for the green light.
Red means stop, green means go, and when the yellow light shines, wait a moment before you go.
Kids, did you get the answers right? Actually, safety and danger aren't absolute. They change depending on time, place, and circumstances. The same action that is safe in one situation might be dangerous in another. That's why we need to learn safety knowledge and learn to judge what's safe and what's dangerous.

Why Do We Need to Learn Safety Knowledge?
Xiaoming's mom was a doctor. One evening, Mom came home from work looking a bit tired. She took off her white coat, sat at the dinner table, and told Xiaoming about something that happened at the hospital during the day.
"A child got burned today," Mom sighed. "He was only five years old. He accidentally knocked a pot of hot water off the table, and the boiling water poured onto his arm. The skin turned red and several big blisters appeared. It was really heart-wrenching to see."
"Five years old? That's about the same age as me!" Xiaoming said in surprise. "How is he now? Does it hurt?"
Mom nodded: "It hurt a lot. The little one cried constantly. But if his family had put the hot water pot out of his reach, or told him that the pot was very hot and shouldn't be touched, perhaps this accident wouldn't have happened."
Xiaoming felt sad after hearing this. He thought about the hot water pot at home, sitting on the edge of the kitchen table where it seemed he could almost reach it. Xiaoming secretly decided that tomorrow he would tell his parents to put the hot water pot in a safe place.
Mom continued: "Actually, most accidental injuries can be prevented. What does that mean? It means if we know in advance what dangerous situations might occur and take preventive measures ahead of time, many accidents won't happen. It's like going to battle—you can win every battle if you know yourself and know your enemy. We must understand danger to avoid danger."
