A New Era Begins
Sunlight fell on Lin Xiaoyu's face through the car window. His heart was beating as fast as a fluttering bird's wings as he gripped the seatbelt tightly. This was his first time riding in a car without a driver.
"Don't be nervous, Xiaoyu," his mother said with a smile beside him. "This car is smarter than you can imagine."
The moment those words faded, the car began moving smoothly.
Xiaoyu's eyes widened—he could see the steering wheel turning by itself! No one was holding it in the driver's seat, yet it moved with the flexibility of something alive, guiding the car out of the parking lot.
The First Miracle: Seeing the World
The moment the car entered the main road, Xiaoyu witnessed a scene he would never forget.
An elderly grandmother was about to cross the street with her shopping cart. Before Xiaoyu could even react—the car had already slowed down gently. The steering wheel turned slightly, and the car smoothly passed around the grandmother, just like a courteous gentleman yielding the way.
"How...how does it know there's someone there?" Xiaoyu asked in amazement.
"Because it has new eyes," his father turned around, eyes filled with pride. "These eyes aren't on its face, but spread all around the car body—cameras, radar, LiDAR. They let the car 'see' this world."
Xiaoyu pressed his face against the window and indeed spotted various strange devices around the car body. At the front was a black dome shaped like a honeycomb, small blinking lights on the sides, and several round "eyes" near the rearview mirrors.
"These are the car's perception system," his father explained. "They work like human eyes and ears, helping the car perceive everything around it—pedestrians, vehicles, traffic lights, road signs, obstacles... Without them, the car would be driving blind."
The Superhero Team: Meet the Sensors
His father's words reminded Xiaoyu of his favorite superhero movie. In that film, heroes with extraordinary powers formed an alliance, each displaying their unique abilities to protect the Earth together.
"So are these perception devices like superheroes too?" Xiaoyu asked excitedly.
"Exactly!" His father's eyes lit up. "And each one has unique superpowers."
📷 Camera: The Eagle-Eyed Photographer
The camera, in English called "Camera," is the member of the perception system most similar to the human eye. If we compare it to a superhero, it would be the Eagle-Eyed Photographer—
Xiaoyu imagined a superhero形象 wearing sunglasses and holding a camera. It could capture colorful scenes: the azure sky, verdant leaves, vivid traffic lights, children's smiling faces... The camera works just like human eyes, able to "see" the colorful world with all its subtle textures.
Modern autonomous vehicles are typically equipped with 8 to 12 cameras distributed around the car body. Imagine this as installing 8 to 12 eyes on the car, each focusing on a different direction:
The camera's superpowers don't end there. They can also instantly identify objects in images—this is achieved through computer vision technology. Just as you can recognize cats and dogs in a picture with a blink, computer vision allows cars to quickly "understand" what the camera captures.
Scientists trained Artificial Intelligence (AI) models so that after "seeing" millions of images, they can distinguish what's a pedestrian, what's a bicycle, what's a truck. A moving car generates 30 to 60 images per second, and the AI system needs to analyze all these images and make decisions within that single second—what an astonishing speed!
However, the camera has its weaknesses too. Just as you can't see anything in darkness, cameras' vision greatly decreases in bad weather like night, rain, snow, or fog. So, the car needs help from other superheroes.
📡 Radar: The Navigator Through Fog
Millimeter-wave radar, in English called "Radar," is the navigation expert in the perception system. If we compare it to a superhero, it would be the Batman who can pierce through fog—
The working principle of radar is quite clever—it uses radio waves. Imagine radar as a bat that's constantly "calling out." It emits invisible radio signals that bounce back when they hit objects. By measuring the time for signals to travel back and forth, radar can calculate the distance to objects.
Doesn't this sound exactly like bat echolocation? Exactly! When bats fly in darkness, they emit ultrasonic waves and judge whether there are obstacles ahead based on how long it takes the sound to bounce back. Radar is the "super bat" invented by humans, except it uses radio waves instead of sound waves.
Radar's superpower is all-weather operation. Whether it's pitch-black night, torrential rain, or dense fog, radar can accurately detect the distance to vehicles and obstacles ahead. This is because radio waves aren't easily blocked by rain and fog like visible light is.
Modern autonomous vehicles typically are equipped with long-range radar and short-range radar:
- **Long-range radar**: Installed at the front of the car, with detection distances over 200 meters, mainly used to spot distant vehicles and provide early warnings for high-speed driving. Like an early warning aircraft, detecting dangers in advance.
- **Short-range radar**: Distributed around the car body, with detection distances within dozens of meters, mainly used for blind spot monitoring, lane changing assistance, and parking. Like a bodyguard, constantly monitoring surrounding dynamics.
What's even more interesting is that radar can not only tell you "there's a car ahead" but also tell you how far away it is, how fast it's moving, and whether it's approaching or moving away. This is because radar uses the Doppler effect—just like how a train's whistle sounds sharper when approaching and lower when leaving, radar can calcula
