欢迎来到3D打印的奇妙世界 / Welcome to the Wacky World of 3D Printing
> Weekend you drag your parents to a trendy toy store, and your eyes lock on a limited-edition anime figurine in the glass cabinet – it’s the protagonist from the two-year-long anime you’ve been obsessed with, in an epic pose. But the price tag says 599 yuan, enough to buy 10 sets of manga. Just as you’re about to beg your parents to buy it, a classmate next to you leans over and says: “I 3D-printed an exact copy last week, only cost 20 yuan in materials, and I can even adjust the pose myself, even add a little glowing cape. Want the model file?”
(3D Printing vs Traditional Printing: Not Even the Same Family)
> Fun Fact: The world's first 3D printer was invented in 1986, a full 12 years earlier than the smartphones we use today! The earliest 3D printers were bigger than a small car, could only print resin materials, and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars – completely out of reach for ordinary people. </aside>
> | Comparison Dimension | Traditional 2D Printing | 3D Printing (Additive Manufacturing) | > | :--- | :--- | :--- | > | Forming Dimension | Two-dimensional plane, can only output images on paper, film and other planes | Three-dimensional solid, directly stack touchable实体objects in space | > | Consumable Types | Ink, toner, paper, photo paper, etc. | Thermoplastics, photosensitive resin, metal powder, ceramics, even chocolate, biological cells, concrete, etc. | > | Output Results | Plane images, text documents, photos, etc. | Solid parts, models, cultural and creative products, even houses, organs, etc. that can be used directly | > | Cost Logic | The more batches printed, the lower the unit cost, and the unit printing cost is extremely low | The cost of single-piece customization is extremely low, but the cost of mass production is higher, no need to open molds | > | Applicable Scenarios | Document printing, photo printing, poster printing, etc. | Prototype production, customized production, medical implants, aerospace parts manufacturing, educational aids, etc. |
> 💡 Tip: 3D printing also has a more academic name called "additive manufacturing", which corresponds to "subtractive manufacturing" (for example, using a lathe to process metal parts, cutting off excess parts) and "net shape manufacturing" (for example, casting, pouring molten metal into a mold, the weight is almost the same as the finished product) in traditional industry. There is no hierarchy between the three manufacturing methods, they are just suitable for different scenarios: to mass-produce 1,000 identical screws, casting is the cheapest; to make a unique custom prosthetic, 3D printing is the most suitable. </aside>
(What Can 3D Printing Do? From Rockets to Chocolate, Crazier Than You Think)
(Aerospace: Bring the Factory to Space)
> In the field of aerospace, 3D printing was one of the earliest application areas, because spacecraft have extremely high requirements for the weight and strength of parts, and the launch cost is calculated by gram, so saving as much as possible is the best. > - Now SpaceX's "Raptor" rocket engine has more than 70% of its parts 3D-printed, which is 30% lighter than traditional parts and has higher strength. The manufacturing cost of the engine has dropped from the original 1 million US dollars to 350,000 US dollars, directly halving the cost of rocket launch. > - On NASA's "Perseverance" Mars rover, there are dozens of 3D-printed parts, including wheel parts of the Mars rover and parts of the oxygen extraction equipment. Because there is no factory on Mars, if the parts are broken, you can only wait for the next batch of detectors to send them over in the past. Now as long as there is a 3D printer and raw materials, you can make the required parts directly on Mars. > - China's own C919 large passenger aircraft cabin parts and engine turbine blades are also 3D-printed, making the aircraft lighter and more fuel-efficient.
(Healthcare: Customized "Body Accessories" for Everyone)
> Medical is the warmest application field of 3D printing, because it can customize products that fit everyone's body data according to everyone's body data, and solve many problems that could not be solved before: > - Customized prosthetics: In the past, prosthetics were mass-produced, the size was not suitable, and they were painful to wear. Many children were reluctant to wear prosthetics because they looked different from normal people. Now 3D printing can be customized accurately according to each person's limb size, and can also print their favorite cartoon patterns: For example, a little girl named Olivia who was born without a left hand, her 3D-printed prosthetic is printed with her favorite Elsa princess pattern. She jumped with joy when she wore it for the first time, and no longer felt that the prosthetic was a "strange thing". > - Dental applications: Now when you go to the hospital to make braces, crowns, and guides for dental implants, many of them are 3D-printed. Traditional dental models need to be carved manually, which takes at least a week, while 3D printing only takes a few hours, with higher accuracy and more comfortable to wear. > - Surgical assistance: Before performing complex surgery, doctors will first 3D-print a 1:1 model of the patient's organ based on the patient's CT data, and practice the surgical steps on the model in advance, which greatly improves the success rate of the surgery and reduces the trauma to the patient.
(Education: Hold Abstract Knowledge in Your Hand) 3D
- 科学课上,老师不用再对着课本上的分子结构图讲解,直接打印出水分子、DNA双螺旋的立体模型,学生拿在手里就能看懂原子是怎么连接的;
