Welcome to Data Kingdom |
In a corner of the city, there stood an old library wrapped in vines and wildflowers. From the outside, it looked like any ordinary building—brick walls covered in ivy, windows dusty with age. But if you looked closely, you'd notice a small weather vane on the roof with ancient words carved into it: "Guardian of Knowledge."
Today, a little girl with a red bow in her hair arrived at this library. Her name was Little Red, and she was the town's most famous little explorer. Little Red's eyes sparkled like two bright black grapes, always curious about everything around her. Her backpack was always filled with a magnifying glass, a notebook, and several colored pencils—her essential exploration tools.
"Grandpa said this library holds many secrets," Little Red told herself as she pushed open the library's heavy wooden door. "I must find them!"
The library was much bigger inside than it appeared from outside. Sunlight streamed through stained glass windows, casting rainbow-colored light spots on the floor. Bookshelves stood in rows like giant trees in a forest, so tall they seemed to touch the ceiling. The air was filled with the smell of old books and wood, with a hint of sweet honey.
Little Red walked between the shelves, running her fingers along the spines of books. "Grimm's Fairy Tales," "Andersen's Fairy Tales," "One Thousand and One Nights"... Suddenly, her attention was caught by something strange.
In the deepest corner of the library, there was a door.
This door was very small—too small for any adult to pass through. Strange symbols and patterns were carved all over it—some looked like numbers, some like letters, and others like animated pictures. Little Red crouched down to examine it carefully and discovered a small keyhole shaped like a coiled dragon.
"I've never seen this door before," Little Red exclaimed in amazement. "This must be the secret Grandpa mentioned!"
Just then, the dragon pattern on the door began to glow with a soft light. The light flowed from the dragon's eyes, illuminating Little Red's red bow. Then, a deep but gentle voice came from behind the door:
"Little Red, little explorer, I've been waiting for you."
Little Red stepped back in surprise, but her curiosity quickly overcame her fear. "Who... who's there?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly but full of anticipation.
"I am the Data Dragon," the voice said. "I guard the most important secrets of this land. If you're willing to step through the door, I will take you on an extraordinary adventure. But remember, a true explorer needs courage and wisdom. Are you ready?"
Little Red took a deep breath, remembering what her most admired explorer—her grandmother—used to say: "The most wonderful discoveries always belong to those brave enough to push open the door to the unknown." She nodded, and though the voice behind the door couldn't see it, this nod represented her determination.
"Wonderful!" the Data Dragon's voice became cheerful. "Now, please place your hand on the door lock and think of your most precious treasure."
Little Red did as instructed. She placed her hand on the dragon-shaped keyhole and thought of her favorite notebook filled with star patterns. In that instant, the door lock glowed with warm light that flowed around Little Red's fingers like water. Then, the light grew stronger and stronger until the entire room was illuminated.
Little Red felt a slight dizziness, like that moment when a swing reaches its highest point. She closed her eyes, counted to three, and opened them again—
She found herself standing in an unbelievable landscape.
---
She stood on a vast prairie, but the grass here wasn't ordinary—each blade glowed like countless tiny glow sticks. The sky wasn't regular blue but deep purple, dotted with stars arranged in beautiful patterns. Most magically, countless tiny spheres of light floated in the sky, flying around like fireflies, but each sphere seemed to contain something.
Little Red rubbed her eyes to make sure she wasn't dreaming.
"Welcome to the Data Kingdom!" the voice spoke again, this time much closer. Little Red turned around and saw a giant dragon standing behind her. This dragon, unlike the scary dinosaurs she'd seen in books, was covered in glowing scales, each one reflecting jumping numbers and text. Its eyes were like two warm pieces of amber, friendly and full of wisdom.
"You... you're the Data Dragon?" Little Red asked in amazement, her words stumbling over each other.
"That's right, my friend!" The Data Dragon lowered its massive head so its eyes were level with Little Red's. "My name is Yuyu, because my scales are engraved with the most precious treasures in the universe—data! In this kingdom, every star, every breeze, every flower has its own data. Data is information about everything—it tells us what things are, where they are, what they look like, and how they relate to other things..."
"Information?" Little Red tilted her head. "Like the labels next to my butterfly specimens? I write the butterfly's name, where I found it, and the date on the labels so I know the story of each butterfly."
The Data Dragon's eyes lit up: "You're so smart! That's exactly right! Data is like clever labels we give to everything in the world. We use data to remember everything so we never forget important things."
The Data Dragon turned around, signaling for Little Red to follow. Together, they walked toward a glittering castle in the distance. Along the way, the Data Dragon began explaining more secrets about the data world.
"Did you know, Little Red? The moment you opened your eyes this morning, about three billion other people were doing the same thing. Many of them opened apps on their phones, played video games, browsed websites, sent messages, and watched videos. All these apps, games, and websites rely on databases to function—the core of our kingdom!"
"Database?" Little Red asked curiously. "What's that? A box that holds data?
