Welcome to the Viking World
Vikings, as they are known in English, were a fascinating people who lived over a thousand years ago. Their legacy continues to captivate people around the world even today.
Before we begin our exploration of the Viking world, let's think about some interesting questions: Who were the Vikings exactly? Why did they travel across vast oceans? What was the land like where they lived? Let's embark on this wonderful journey through time with these questions in mind.
Who Were the Vikings?
When we say the word "Viking," you might picture in your mind strong men with horned helmets and big beards, steering dragon-headed longships across icy seas, conquering lands everywhere. This image is indeed very cool, but did you know? This is only part of who the Vikings were!
First, let's clarify an important concept: the word "Vikings" actually refers specifically to those Nordic people who left their homelands to sail and explore. Those who stayed behind to farm the land and take care of their families also had a name: they were called "Nordic People" or "Norsemen." To use an analogy, just as we can't say that all Chinese people became explorers, we can't say that all Nordic people became Vikings.
(Sweden)。Vikings actually came from a region called "Scandinavia." This name might sound a bit long, but if you break it apart, it's easy to remember—just "Scan" plus "dina" plus "via." A very long time ago, many different tribes lived on this land. They spoke similar languages and had similar beliefs. Over time, these tribes gradually formed three main countries: Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Did you ever wonder why these Nordic people would leave their warm homes and travel to such distant places? There were actually many reasons, and each one is interesting!
Reason One: Growing Population, Not Enough Farmland
Imagine if your family had many, many children, but only a small patch of land to grow vegetables. What would happen when time passed and the harvest wasn't enough for everyone to eat? In the Nordic region around 700 to 800 CE, the population was growing quickly, but there wasn't much fertile land. Many children's families couldn't provide enough land for them to inherit.
Some clever young people thought: Since there's not enough land here, I'll find somewhere else! So they gathered their families, boarded their longships, and set off toward unknown lands.
Reason Two: Trading for Profit, Searching for Treasures
Although the Vikings lived in the far north, they were actually quite good at doing business! In that era, the Nordic region had some very special resources, such as high-quality furs (from Arctic foxes and rabbits), precious amber (a golden gemstone made from ancient tree resin), and walrus ivory (from the long tusks of walruses). These items were extremely rare in other places and could be traded for many wonderful things, like silk, spices, gold, silver, and jewelry.
So, many Vikings set sail not just for battle, but more for business. They sailed from one port to another, selling Nordic specialties and buying treasures from other places. This was very business-savvy behavior!
Reason Three: Driven by Curiosity, Exploring the Unknown
Did you know that humans are naturally curious? We want to know what's on the other side of the mountain, what lies at the end of the sea. Vikings over a thousand years ago were the same.
Nordic poets created many poems telling wonderful stories about distant lands. Some poems said there was a great empire in the east, where the emperor lived in a magnificent palace and the streets were paved with gold. Other poems told of a mysterious land in the west, where the sun never set and the moon never rose—though this was an exaggeration, such stories made many Vikings itch with curiosity, eager to see for themselves.
And so, generation after generation of Vikings embarked on journeys of exploration. They not only discovered far northern lands like Iceland and Greenland, but they even reached the North American continent—nearly five hundred years before Columbus!
Nordic Five: Homes of the Vikings
Now, let's get to know the homelands of the Vikings—the Nordic Five. These five countries are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and Finland. They are like five sparkling gems embedded in the northern part of our world map.
Denmark: The Bridge Connecting North and South
Denmark is the southernmost of the Nordic Five. It serves like a bridge, connecting the Scandinavian Peninsula to the European continent. Imagine if you thought of the map of Europe as an open hand, Denmark would be located at the "wrist" position.
Denmark is a country made up of many small islands. The largest island is called "Zealand," and the capital city Copenhagen is located on this island. Did you know that Denmark actually consists of approximately 400 islands? Though not every island is inhabited, this number is still impressive!
Denmark's terrain is very flat, without any towering mountains. The highest hill is only about 170 meters above sea level. This flat terrain made Denmark well-suited for agriculture. During the Viking Age, Danes were excellent farmers who grew barley and wheat and raised cattle and sheep.
Denmark also has an interesting characteristic: summers here are cool and pleasant, but winters are quite long and cold, often bringing rain or snow. This is somewhat different from the image we might have of Vikings in a world of ice and snow!
During the Viking Age, Denmark played a very important role. Danish Vikings were famous for their powerful navy. Their ships were well-designed, fast, and easy to maneuver. Many historically famous Viking expeditions and raids launched from Denmark.
Norway: Land of Fjords and Mountains
Sailing north from Denmark, across a body of water called the "Skagerrak," you
