This is a scene many of us experience daily. In the morning, you carry a bag of trash downstairs, skillfully throwing it into the garbage bin downstairs—perhaps a black bin marked "other waste," or a blue one for recyclables. You turn and leave, starting a new day. This action is so ordinary, so automatic, that few people stop to wonder: Where does this bag of trash ultimately end up? What kind of impact does it have on our planet?
If you had the chance to trace that bag of trash's journey, you might discover an unsettling truth: in many cities, the garbage you carefully sorted or mixed and discarded ultimately meets one of these fates—buried, burned, or in some cases, dumped in some corner far from the city's sight, accumulating over time into what we today call "garbage mountains" or "garbage islands."
This is not fearmongering. This is precisely why we must seriously discuss waste sorting today.
The Earth Is Being Swamped by Garbage
Let us first look at some cold, hard numbers. They might make you reconsider the seemingly insignificant word "garbage."
According to the World Bank's "What a Waste 2.0" report released in 2023, the total amount of solid waste generated globally each year has exceeded 2.2 billion tons. What does this number represent? If we loaded all this waste into standard garbage trucks, they could circle the Earth 24 times. Yes, you read that correctly—24 times. Imagine that long convoy of garbage trucks circling the Earth 24 times over, what a shocking and alarming image that would be.
What's even more concerning is that this number continues to climb. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), as the global population grows and consumption levels rise, global annual waste generation is projected to reach 3.4 billion tons by 2050. This means that in less than thirty years, the amount of garbage we produce daily will increase by over 50%. If we accumulate all the waste over the next thirty years, its weight might exceed the total of all buildings in human history.
In China, these numbers are equally staggering. According to statistics from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, in 2022, China's urban household waste collection and transport volume reached approximately 250 million tons, an increase of about 2% from the previous year. And this is only "household waste"—if we include industrial solid waste, construction waste, agricultural waste, and other categories, the broad sense of solid waste generation is even higher, reaching over 1 billion tons. This means that every Chinese person produces approximately 700 kilograms of household waste annually—roughly the weight of seven bags of rice. Imagine if you had to personally produce waste equivalent to seven bags of rice every year and watch it disappear somewhere you cannot see—wouldn't you feel a twinge of unease?
Plastic: The Earth's "Permanent Resident"
Among all waste problems, plastic pollution is undoubtedly one of the most severe challenges. The invention of plastic was once hailed as a great achievement of human civilization—lightweight, durable, and low-cost. It transformed our way of life, from packaging food to manufacturing phones, from medical devices to aerospace applications, plastic is almost everywhere. However, these very "advantages" have now become the Earth's nightmare.
More than 400 million tons of plastic are produced globally each year, of which approximately 36% is used for single-use packaging. This means approximately 1 million plastic bottles are purchased globally every minute, and 15 tons of plastic enter the ocean every second. These numbers are shocking, but what is even more concerning is plastic's "immortal" nature.
You may have heard the saying that a plastic bottle takes 450 years or even longer to fully decompose. This is not an exaggeration. Plastic is composed of long-chain molecules (polymers), and these chemical bonds are exceptionally stable, with virtually no microorganisms in nature capable of breaking them down. Under the long-term effects of the environment, plastic fragments into smaller pieces—microplastics—but they will never truly "disappear." They simply transform from visible plastic bottles and bags into tiny particles invisible to the naked eye, infiltrating soil, rivers, and oceans, even entering our food chain.
In 2019, a study by National Geographic shocked the world: researchers detected microplastics in 90% of salt samples, 83% of tap water, and various seafood products worldwide. What does this mean? It means almost every one of us ingests microplastics unknowingly every day. Initial estimates by scientists show that an average person ingests approximately the weight of a credit card in microplastics weekly—accumulating to about the weight of a credit card annually.
Imagine if someone told you that you unknowingly "consume" approximately 52 credit cards' worth of plastic annually, how would you feel? This is not a science fiction plot, but a reality unfolding before us.
The "Domino Effect" of Waste
Perhaps you might ask: Is the waste problem really that serious? If I casually discard a plastic bag, will it really impact the Earth?
The answer is: Yes, and the impact is far more profound than we imagine. The impact of waste on Earth's ecosystems is like a chain of dominoes—once triggered, it sets off a series of chain reactions that ultimately affect each and every one of us.
The First Domino: Soil Pollution
When waste enters the environment, the first to be affected is the soil. Whether it's a landfill on the outskirts of a city or illegal dumping sites in rural areas, accumulated waste causes serious pollution to the soil. Heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, mercury), organic pollutants (such as polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins), and residual pesticides and fertilizers in waste gradually infiltrate deep into the soil, disrupting the ecological balance of the earth.
